how Windows Server backup/recover/vss work and interrelate

0
0

I am looking for a manual (perhaps) the describes how windows server backup, recover, VSS, and previous versions work and how they interrelate. I want to start with a macro view and then work my way into the minutiae.

I am using windows sever backup to protect my Windows Server 2012R2and Windows Server 2008R2 boxes.  However, I do not really understand how all the pieces work.

Are there any utilities that allow me to peruse the windows server backupfile catalog?  I want to find all instances of a particular file that are available to be recovered.  Along with the filename and path, I want to see the file size and creation and/or modification for each instance of the file.

I prefer not to read many many individual small postings or help messages and then try to put the pieces together.  I prefer the organization that manuals provide.

thanks

How to run restore from backup in safe mode?

0
0

So after last update my w2k8r2 is unable to stay afloat for so long that is required to roll back, it resets and ask me reason for shutdown afterwards. Safe mode seem stable, but does not allow me to restore the system. I found in some discussions that backup service requires shadow copy service to run, but if I try to start that service I get the very same message that it cant be run in safe mode. Seems like a bug, maybe conceptual?

I need to override this VERY FAST and do the restore in safe mode. How?

USB-Attached Backup Drive Now Failing with "Specified Backup Disk Cannot be Found" - 0x807800C5

Thanks in advance for the help.  I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Server that has been running flawlessly for almost six months, including daily backups to a USB-attached 1.8 TB hard drive.  Total internal disk space is 900 GB of which only about 30% is used.

Three days ago, backups started failing with the 0x807800C5 error and "specified backup disk cannot be found" error.  I've tried deleting all of the backups, reformatting the the USB drive, deleting the entire backup configuration and re-initializing, SFC on the backup drive and C drive (no errors)...

No updates or software changes were installed between the time backups were working and when the process began failing.

I have tried backing up via WBADMIN to other locations, including a new/different USB-attached hard drive and the C drive and they respond with the same error.

VSSAdmin List Writers shows all writers stable - no errors.

There are no virtual machines involved on the server.

There are no other errors in the event log other than the backup error.  Below is a listing of the error message details.

Thanks again.

Server Backup Failure (Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials)

0

This seems to be a problem that has come up before in these forums - I have been through several threads and none of the suggestions have helped fix server backup.

I am trying to perform a System State and C: backup (for Bare Metal Recovery) - backup is to a local drive (so not a NAS or a Network Share). Server Backup used to work but stopped sometime around the time I switched the backup drive (which was running out of space).

Backup fails both from the scheduled Server Essentials Dashboard and also manually using wbadmin. For example:

wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:P: -include:c: -allcritical -vssfull -quiet > "c:\Temp\Server Backup.log"

Gives the following output:

wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool

Backup of volume \\?\Volume{c05750d2-1c50-11e3-80b1-806e6f6e6963}\ has failed. The specified backup disk cannot be found.

I think underlying this is a VSS problem but I can't spot anything amiss using vssadmin. (vssadmin list writers shows 'No Errors' against each entry).

Looking at the Event Log, there are no entries shown against VSS (as Source) under Backup (as Source), the following error is shown:

The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎08‎-‎23T00:30:21.834712600Z' has failed with following error code '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

I'm stumped - I've spent 3 or 4 days trying to crack this and am no further forward. Any help or suggestions would be really appreciated.

Windows server 2008 R2 backup error code '2147943484'

Hi to all,

When I try to use wbadmin to backup something (system state or folders) on my windows 2008 r2 server the following error message appears in the Event Viewer:

"The backup operation that started at '‎2011‎-‎11‎-‎25T15:02:58.627000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2147943484'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved"

the wbadmin gui shows the following infomation: " vss copy backup - status failed. This service cannot be started in safe mode.

obviously the server is not in safe mode and the command 'vssadmin list writers' don't shows errors and every writer is stable and without error.

I 've already tried to remove and reinstall the backup features without success.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Luca

Full Windows Server Backup using Disk2VHD

Dear Server Expert,

I would like to do full image backup of one of our physical database server into the VHD or VHDX format, so It can be restore to another server as a VM. I have tried to convert for some servers and it is able to work. May I know whether DISK2VHD will be able to work with database server with Navision on it?

Thanks.

Can't restore Windows Server 2008 R2 image

Hi,

I'm testing the system restore of a virtual server and it's giving me an error.

Let me start with the VM configuration:

- Source -

VMware Virtual Machine generation 8

Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

25 GB Hard disk

2 GB RAM

2 CPUs

Made a Bare Metal backup using this command:

wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\<ip>\backup -include:C: -allCritical -systemState -quiet

Then I went to another ESXi and created the same specifications VM:

- Destination -

VMware Virtual Machine generation 8

30GB Hard disk

2 GB RAM

2 CPUs

So I've started it with the Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 system CD. Set the language, clicked onRepair and added the DVD with the backup files (created na ISO from the backup folder).

It verifies the backup correctly, and when I ask it to restore... it starts, formats the disk to create the 25GB partition of the original source... and it gaves me an errorThe parameter is incorrect:0x80070057

Anyone knows anything about it? The only solutions I found about this problem was removing the system OS pendrive bootdisk from the machine before starting recovery...

Scheduled Backup not running consistently

Using Windows Server Backup I setup a scheduled backup on Server 2008 running Exchange 2007.  It ran as scheduled until 5 days ago, when it stopped running in its entirety until this morning.

There is a gap in Windows Server Backup between these dates. The backups do not fail as they do not run at all. Although each day in WSB the backup says it is scheduled for that day.

In the Scheduled task for the backup there are no notifications between the 9th and the 14th.

When the task has started today it seems that it has attempted to run the task several times. Which resulted in a number of failures.

I have followed the step to change the task limit within the registry in this other technet post to no success.

Windows Server 2012 + HP Ultrium LTO-6 + LTFS = strange copy behaviour

0
0

Hi all,

I'm struggling to get my head around an issue we've encountered, so thought I'd ask here!

We use a Quantum Scalar i40 robot with a HP Ultrium LTO-6 fibre channel attached drive. This is attached to a Qlogic QLE2562 8 Gb/s FC card on a host.

We first started noticing something strange when copying (using Windows 2012 R2 Standard Explorer copy/paste) from the host storage to the LTO-6 drive. When trying to archive a large amount of files (image sequences) we would sometimes get an error “File IMG123456.dpx already exists, do you wish to replace or skip?”. If we clicked Replace or Skip, the same outcome, the file would not be present on the tape. Initially, we would re-format the tape and copy the entire data again, but the same error, on the same file would appear. We think we have got around this by copying the missing frame to the parent directory and ‘moving’ the file into the image sequence.

However, the problem that has led to this post is the reverse; copying from an LTO-6 tape to our storage. We copied an entire tape and informed our colleagues that the data was online for them to view. Upon viewing the image sequence copied off the tape, we noticed that a frame e.g. IMG100001.dpx was actually frame IMG100002.dpx. However IMG100002.dpx would remain the same.

We told the supplier that the data was corrupt. We returned the LTO to them for further checks. They informed us the data on the LTO was OK and the data on their SAN was OK. We received the same LTO back from them and copied the frame IMG100001.dpx (initially wrong) by itself and the frame was OK. We then copied the entire contents of the tape again and the same thing happened. The same frame was replaced by IMG100002.dpx.

I don’t know is this is a Windows bug or an HP StoreOpen LTFS bug. I've raised a ticket with HP but they've in turn told me to raise a ticket with Microsoft.

Wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Appreciate your thoughts,

DM3G

Multiple USB Seagate Fast BUP will not eject after a backup has completed

Hey everyone!

I have a customer that started having an issue about a month ago. Their running 2012 R2 with a hyper-v cluster. Their backups would fail until a server reboot was performed. We have narrowed it down to the drive not being ejected properly. But it's not just one drive. We have 15 of them and all of them have the same issue.

I have read tons of forums about ejecting safely to off-lining the drive (which is a big no no) to changing the hardware policy. None of which have worked.

Basically we found out that as soon as we hit the eject option from the tray the system just sits there. All of the sudden the below processes show up:

Then we get the error:

No matter how many times we try we cannot eject the drive. If we just unplug it we get thousands of these:

The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: E:, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume7.
(A device which does not exist was specified.)

Once that happens then we have to force reboot the system and can't migrate and of the hyper-v cluster roles away ending up in a entire system crash.

We have learned though! After each backup is complete we drain the cluster roles from the server and reboot it. We can then eject the drive safely.

So... Anyone got any ideas? Maybe a recent microsoft patch?

Please let me know. Thanks!

I have been running backups on a Windows 2012 R2 Server (Dell PowerEdge T420) for a few months with no problems.  We backup to a rotation of 3 RDX 1TB Cartridges but found out that Windows Backup does not support removable RDX media.  To get around this problem, we use BackupAssist which still uses Windows Server Backup in the background to complete the backups.

BackupAssist uses a single .vhd container file on the RDX and it is mounted asdrive G:

Again, this worked for a few months with no problems.

Then I ran Windows Update and about 30 updates were applied to the server.  Since then we cannot seem to keep multiple backups on the RDX Cartridge.  Before the Windows Updates, I was able to keep previous backups, sometimes as many as 98 copies.  We are backing up about 30GB of data each night.

Now, since the Windows Updates, I cannot get past 2 or 3 perhaps, and then lose all backup copies and end up with a completed backup, but only 1 backup copy and no previous backups.

We see in the error log the following error, which I believe is the cause of the problem.  Backups run at 8pm nightly.

I have 3 sites setup the same.  2 of the sites had all the Windows Updates applied and then started having this problem.  The above error was never seen until the Windows Updates.  The third site has not had any Windows Updates applied, and we currently have 42 previous backups on the loaded RDX Cartridge.

I have been working with BackupAssist support, but they state that it is simply Windows Server Backup that runs the back end and it is probably a Windows Server issue.  I have been fighting this for 2 months now.

Just wondering if anyone has any idea on the above error.

Thanks in advance to any that can shed some light on this problem.

WBADMIN Backups Fail - Apprently Corrupted Backup File

I have my servers set up to do local backups to external hard drives with a goal of 7 to 14 days of backups using command line scripting.  Each Sunday the scripts rename the external drive WindowsServerBackukp folder to WindowsServerBackupOld before starting the current day's backup.

On several servers, the backup to the new WindowsServerBackup folder fails.  Typically the new WindowsServerBackup folder is only 5Mb to 10Mb.  Attempts to rerun the backup fail almost immediately:

Web search indicates that this may be caused by the backup file being corrupted.

No other errors are recorded in event logs.  Deleting the WindowsImageBackup folder and rerunning the backup always succeeds.

I would appreciate any thoughts on what may be causing these failures.

Thanks!

Event ID 517, 519 windows backup systemstate cluster node

Hello,

At this moment we are using a server 2008 R2 SP1 cluster with 2 nodes, using an application clusterdisk (E:).
Both cluster nodes have services wich are pointing towards an E: path.
Unfortunately, our systemstate backup fails on the node where the E: volume (clusterdisk) is not online.

If I make an systemstate backup with "windows backup" it fails and generates an 519 ID :
‘The backup operation that started at '‎2016‎-‎01‎-‎18T20:00:51.247109700Z' has failed to back up volume(s)’

If I make an systemstate backup with "wbadmin" it fails and generates an 517 ID:
The backup operation that started at '‎2016‎-‎01‎-‎18T16:58:44.437751000Z' has failed with following error code '2155347997'

The hotfix from https://support.microsoft.com/nl-nl/kb/2182466 can't be installed.

I also read in this article (https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/19ed7bbb-1e6f-4074-bbda-d01411280e8c/wbadmin-failing-system-state-error-517?forum=windowsbackup) the following text :

"i think i figured out an issue with one of the services was poitning towards an incorrect path..the servcie is removed although the system state has started to work but untill system is rebooted will not be able to confirm..."

I would like to know if someone experienced the same issue, and if they know a solution for this problem.

Kind regards,

Johan

Backup Recovery not showing file and folder tree only Local disk (C:) Error: "The open instance of Recovery Wizard was inactive

Windows Server 2008 R2 edition with Hyper V installed and running two virtual Servers. Using Windows Server Backup to backup systems. On trying to do a test restore and using file and folder I see the server name and then the tree to Local Disk (C:) but when I try to expand the C drive after ten minutes get the error message:

"The open instance of Recovery Wizard was inactive for more than ten minutes. The wizard was automatically canceled to allow other backup or recovery tasks to proceed."

The backup history all shows as successful.

Don't know if this means the backups are useless or something else is preventing the recovery of individual files?

Hope there is a simple explanation for this and all the backups are still salvageable if needed.

Thanks

Chris
