Raid

I have set RAID 1 on machine HP proliant dl380 g4 running Windows Server 2012 Essentials. Machine contains 6 HDD-s. I have some doubts because file security is very important here.

Logical Unit #1 contains HDD 0 and HDD 1. After implementing RAID 1 I see only one HDD. What about files that are stored on visible HDD , are they going to be saved on invisible HDD automatically? In case visible HDD get damaged would I be able to still have files on invisible? Do I need just to replace HDD

Logical Unit #2 contains HDD 2,3,4,5 (visibile HDD are 2 & 3, 4&5 are invisible). Files that are stored on visible, will be saved on invisible?

robocopy volume snapshots

I am trying to robocopy data from a mounted volume shadow snapshot. I tried to following methods

1. opened a command shell as admin under psexec

2. typed in vssadmin list shadows /for=c:

3.mounted a snapshot by typing mklink /d C:\shadow2  \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy2\

4. I can access the mounted snapshot via the explorer browser and cmd shell

5. When I try to acquire data using robocopy     robocopy "\\remotemachineip\shadow2" "\\examinermachineip\g\snapshot" /e /zb /copy:DATSO /xj /a-:h /r:10 /w:10

I get the error Error 317 (0x0000013D) Accessing Source Directory. I have also tried giving myself full permissions on the snapshot folder shadow 2;however, the same issue arises. I am stumped here.

Microsoft backup restore of windows server 2008 R2 created copy of all files

We did a Microsoft backup restore of windows server 2008 R2 (not SQL Server).  That created a copy of all files in all dirs.  For example, it created a copy of all files or directories in the windows directory.  For the net beans install, for example, for every single file "x", it created "copy of x" in the same directory.  This corrupted the iis because of all the copies.  Same thing with some of the other applications...they didn't work.  Once we deleted the copies, for example, iis worked again.  Same thing with net beans.  We're still working on some of the other programs.

So, next time we do a restore, we want to prevent "copy of x" for everything to be created.  How do we do that?  Any ideas what we did or didn't do?

Thanks,

M

Windows backup failing with error code - 2147942402

Hello,

I am trying to run a complete backup on a Windows SBS 2008 server using Windows Server Backup to a 2Tb external USB harddisk - I am choosing Backup Once and Custom with "Enable System Recovery".

This is failing with an error message indicating "The system cannot find the file specified" after having transferred approximately 28.23GB of data.

The error code from the event viewer is: 2147942402

I have tried to run the backup to another device (a drive on a networked PC) and this suceeded without any problems which suggests to me some kind of problem with the USB drive.

I came across these links: support.microsoft.com/kb/979281 and support.microsoft.com/kb/976972- but the server that I am using does not have an NVIDIA USB Host Controller - instead it has "Intel(R) ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controller" - so I am hesitant to try this fix.

I am going to reformat the USB drive to see if this helps...

Many Thanks,

Adrian

Server Backup - System State Backup Canceled

$

I have a Server 2008 R2 machine that has been backing up just fine for months. All of a Sudden it's showing a warning each night. Looking at the details it shows all volumes backed up successfully, and backs up the BMR as well. Beside System State is shows this: "Backup Canceled. System state backup was canceled"

It was not canceled manually so something else must be going on. I looked at the log files under %windir%\logs\WindowsServerBackup and the backup_error-date is completely blank. Nothing in there. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

I have no Event ID 517's in the Event Viewer. There are NO recent Backup errors in the event viewer. I need help! Thanks!!

We have a win 2003 server with xp clients. Suddenly it´s impossible to open any files. I can navigate to folders and i can see the files. I can not reach internet. I can ping the server and i can navigate to shares. I can work for hours  and everything is fine but suddenly it´s not possible to open any files, not on the client or the server. If i log out and then in it works again.

Anyone knows whats wrong or where to start search? I have tested the memory with memtest on the client and it works fine.

Thankful for all help.

Cannot Restore Some Folders From Full Backup

Hi guys,

I have an interesting query in regards to Server 2008 Standard backup.  This is a terminal server configured with Remote Desktop licenses and Office 2007 licensing.  It has been running fine for the last few years, or so we thought.

Recently it was required to restore some files to a user data folder that went "missing" (likely user error, we all know about those haha).  However when it came time to perform the restore I had to manually swap out different backup drives until I found that particular folder available for restore.  My client then tells me that it is a very old version that I have restored and she has had to redo a lot of work to catch up.

My query is this - how exactly does a full backup work in Server 2008 Standard x64?  A full backup to me would entail backing up each file and folder every time.  I have checked the backup settings and it is configured for full backup every time rather than incremental backup.

The client has 4x USB backup drives which they rotate regularly (these drives are configured with the schedule) as well as a separate backup drive which the director plugs in once a month or so and runs a full manual backup to it.  He uses this monthly drive on all his servers so it is not part of the scheduled backups.  It was from this monthly drive that I was able to restore the folder that was missing from the scheduled backup drives.

Does this make sense to anyone, and can anyone provide assistance in what we could do to make sure every file/folder gets backed up every time?

Many thanks.

Unable to configure Service Account to perform System State Backup

I'm trying to backup my system state on my Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controller via a command line batch file.

I have created a dedicated service account and configured this within Task Manager. Whenever I click on 'Apply' I get the following error

'An error has occurred for task Backup. Error message: The following error was reported: 2147943712'

I did a bing search and found an article which suggests to change registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA DisableDomainCreds to 0.

PROBLEM:

Once I've set this registry I can configure a service account and the backup is performed successfully however it keeps changing back to 1.

What else am I missing/need to do?

Windows Server 2012 Windows Backup failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).

The Volume Shadow Copy service initially was running under the context of System, so we thought that ‘System’ doesn’t have permissions to access network shares. When the Volume Shadow Copy service was running under the context of System, this was the error logged:

“failed with following error code '0x8078014B' (There was a failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location.).”

Which is likely due to not having permissions to write to the network location.  This is a scheduled backup trying to write to a network location, so we changes the service to run under the context of an account that does have permissions to write to the network share.  Then the error changed to this:

“failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).”

We aren’t really seeing anything that gives any hint on what the issue is. Any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

Windows Server 2012 Backup and Restore -- Cannot restore from external hard drive

$

I am using Windows Server 2012 Standard.

I have been using Server Backup to do daily backups to a 3TB external USB hard drive.  Well it so happens that I finally needed to do a restore.  I realize how stupid it was to wait until I needed a restore to test it, but here I am.

Using a Windows Server 2012 install cd I try to restore from a system image.  However, the tool does not find any backups.  I've moved the main hard drive to another computer and booted into Windows.  It is odd because the Server Backup tool shows that it has daily backups since March.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a new Dell R710 that I have 2008 Server R2 64-bit installed. It's role is file server. I first noticed there were VSS initialization issues in BackupExec and that the system state wasn't getting backed up.

Then I would run "vssadmin list writers" from CMD and system writer would be timing out....

Also event ID 22 for volsnap The shadow copy storage volume specified for shadow copies on volume\\?\Volume{caaccaea-2a96-11e1-b14b-806e6f6e6963} could not be added.

Also I can't configure shadow copies due to error 0x8004230f "Failed to retrieve volumes that are eligible for shadow copies.

How does robocopy walk through a directory tree

$

Hi all,

could someone explain to me how robocopy "walks" through a directory tree?

It is not alphabetically, or from big to small. Looking at the ressource monitor ist seems that robocopy processes the directories randomly.

How could i calculate how long it will need to finish?

I start Robocopy with these parameters on a Server 2008 R2:

Source Dest /MT:16 /MIR /NP /COPYALL /W:1 /R:1 /LOG:Logfile

At startup the logfile contains only the header (in older versions of robocopy the logfile was written directly).

only after robocopy finished the logfile is written and the files listed are in alphabetically order.

Windows Server Backup Feature error when trying to enableit (80070bc9)

When I tried to enable Windows Server Backup Feature to our Windows 2008 R2 SP1 domain server, it failed. The system asked to reboot to rollback changes and from that day Server Manager program informs "Cannot display data until computer is restarted" in roles and features summary. The status error in servermanager.log file is "-2147021879 (80070bc9)".

Is there anybody who knows how to workaround this issue?
