Problem with systemstate backup to fileshare with wbadmin.exe

$

Hello,

hope somebody could help.

I try to backup my server system state (Windows 2008R2, SP1, alle security patches) with the following command line:

wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\servername\share -systemstate -user:doamin\username -password:pw

I always get the following error message:

Fehler beim Formatieren von Medien durch die Windows-Sicherung. (german)
Error formatting media through windows backup. (my translation)

I tried different things (other user, change file share, target another server). Error remains the same. Some files are created at the target share, so it should not be a permission issue.

I single backup with GUI to the same network share works fine.

Thank you for help!

Regards,

C.-P. Malek

VSS writers timeout Server2008 R2

$

Hello everyone

I have been having continual issue with IIS, WMI and System writers on Windows Server2008 R2

Using Symantec BE, jobs keep failing and the writer status's keep reverting to timeouts state after/during a jobs running.

Doing a restart on the server brings all the states to stable, but then when the job runs and fails, the writers are timed-out.

I can't seem to find any solution to this issue on server2008 besides the good old restart, which isn't cutting it anymore.

Anyway to update/reinstall system writers?

Any solution/tips are appreciated!

Server 2012 Backup to Remote Shared Folder Fails

$

I have a new 2012 Server and am trying to get Windows Backup to function as designed. I created a job and pointed it to a remote shared folder on another server. The first backup runs just fine, but subsequent backup jobs fail a few minutes after they start with the error "The specified name is no longer available." Thing is, that is not the problem - there is clearly a bug in the Server 2012 backup since the first backup to an EMPTY remote folder ALWAYS works just fine, it is only the subsequent backups that fail.  Another user reported this problem elsewhere but was never able to resolve the Windows Backup issue, he merely switched to using a 3rd-party backup product.

Does System State Backup support incremental backup in Wİndows Server 2008 R2

Hi Gurus,

on the following technet link Microsoft mentions that a System State Backup does not have an incremental support. An this article applies to 2008 R2 too.

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2
Backing Up Active Directory Domain Services
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc816584.aspx
Feature  System state backup
Has incremental backup support No*

Below, a Microsoft employee on technet blogs mentions that 2008 R2 system state backups are incremental.

http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2009/06/22/backup-version-and-space-management-in-windows-server-backup.aspx
New in Windows Server 2008 R2 system state backups are incremental and use VSS shadow copies for creating different versions of the backup.

I would really appreciate if a an MSFT can tell me which one is correct.

With kind regards,

Cengiz Kuskaya

Hi,

Thanks

If I stop the backup and recreate it it works fine for one night then I start to see these errors. Anybody know what would cause this? I can access the remote share just fine from the server so I doubt that's the issue.

I have setup a Server 2012 perfectly and wish to create another server using the exact same hardware, so I have bought another Windows Server licence.  My question is, can I do a Windows Server Backup bare metal then restore that onto the new server hardware and then change the product key using slmgr so that the new server uses the freshly-purchased product key?

Then do I have to re-activate the new server?

Will I get any problems having them on the same network, once I have changed the computer name and IP address, is there a GUID in the computer somewhere that will cause me issues?

Is this legal to do like this?

Many thanks.

Windows Server 2012 Backup Volume Shadow Copy Error

Hello All

We have Windows Server 2012 running at our office with Hyper-V and we are (trying) to use windows backup service to take regular backups of our server. However, sadly we are getting an error:
"The backup operation that started at '?2013?-?07?-?16T18:30:22.786000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '0x80780021'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved."

We have been through the technet forums but sadly have not been able to find any solution. Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Windows Server 2012 Backup (IO operation at logical block address ... for Disk .. was retried)

Hi,

I am running in to periodic issues with Windows Server Backup backing up deduplicated data to a UNC path.  Both Servers are domain joined and running 2012 DataCenter edition.

The backup process does not begin logging Event ID 153 until it reaches the deduplicated volume.  It successfully backed up its own system state and C drive volume (~21GB), but upon reaching the deduped volume, began throwing IO errors.  The IO errors are on the mounted UNC volume to which the server backing up copies it backed up data.

Once the errors began spewing out, the backup will eventually stall.  The most reliable manner for me to recover the server running the backup is to block the UNC traffic at the server hosting the backup data volume.  This action routinely and repeatedly allows the backup process to terminate.  Normally, I cannot successfully terminate the backup process by cancelling.

What suggestions might any one have for me to more closely analyze the filesystem operations on the deduped volume conducted by wbengine?  I ran procmon before the wbengine process stalled, and did not see any precise process activity that corresponded to the Event Viewer entries.

After the wbengine process stalls, procmon does not load.  However, if I enforce my cut-off with the Windows Firewall on the backup data server, procmon will load following the successful termination of wbengine.

Any help is appreciated.  I have a peer with a similar issue happening, although that issue has a directly mounted iSCSI backup volume yet the source volume for the backup is also deduped.

We have a win 2003 server with xp clients. Suddenly it´s impossible to open any files. I can navigate to folders and i can see the files. I can not reach internet. I can ping the server and i can navigate to shares. I can work for hours  and everything is fine but suddenly it´s not possible to open any files, not on the client or the server. If i log out and then in it works again.

Anyone knows whats wrong or where to start search? I have tested the memory with memtest on the client and it works fine.

Thankful for all help.

Cannot Restore Some Folders From Full Backup

Hi guys,

I have an interesting query in regards to Server 2008 Standard backup.  This is a terminal server configured with Remote Desktop licenses and Office 2007 licensing.  It has been running fine for the last few years, or so we thought.

Recently it was required to restore some files to a user data folder that went "missing" (likely user error, we all know about those haha).  However when it came time to perform the restore I had to manually swap out different backup drives until I found that particular folder available for restore.  My client then tells me that it is a very old version that I have restored and she has had to redo a lot of work to catch up.

My query is this - how exactly does a full backup work in Server 2008 Standard x64?  A full backup to me would entail backing up each file and folder every time.  I have checked the backup settings and it is configured for full backup every time rather than incremental backup.

The client has 4x USB backup drives which they rotate regularly (these drives are configured with the schedule) as well as a separate backup drive which the director plugs in once a month or so and runs a full manual backup to it.  He uses this monthly drive on all his servers so it is not part of the scheduled backups.  It was from this monthly drive that I was able to restore the folder that was missing from the scheduled backup drives.

Does this make sense to anyone, and can anyone provide assistance in what we could do to make sure every file/folder gets backed up every time?

Many thanks.

Windows Server 2012 Windows Backup failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).

The Volume Shadow Copy service initially was running under the context of System, so we thought that ‘System’ doesn’t have permissions to access network shares. When the Volume Shadow Copy service was running under the context of System, this was the error logged:

“failed with following error code '0x8078014B' (There was a failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location.).”

Which is likely due to not having permissions to write to the network location.  This is a scheduled backup trying to write to a network location, so we changes the service to run under the context of an account that does have permissions to write to the network share.  Then the error changed to this:

“failed with following error code '0x8078006B' (Windows Backup failed to create the shared protection point on the source volumes.).”

We aren’t really seeing anything that gives any hint on what the issue is. Any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

Easy Server 2012 backup solutions with tape support?

$

We have several smaller to midsized customers that have invested money in tape drives and tapes. They are using Symantec BackupExec on Server 2003 / 2008 and 2008 R2. Unfortunately, Symantec postponed Server 2012 support in their products  many times already. This fact costs us many business opportunities to upgrade infrastructures to Server 2012.

DPM 2012 is good for larger customers, but less suited for smaller companies (and the DPM "philosophy change" of the backup procedures, compared to older tape based backup solutions is an obstacle as well.)

So we are looking for EASY backup solutions that support tape drives and server 2012. The "perfect" product for us would be just a tape driver and an extension to the integrated Windows Server Backup that would allow to store backups on tapes, the same way that Windows Backup allows backups to network shared folders.

Does anyone knows EASY backup software that provides this functionality? I'm also very interested in feedback from peoples that have successfully used such products on Server 2012 and are satisfied with them.

Thank you all in advance for any help.

Franz
