Event ID 51 on Windows Server 2012 R2 during backup

Hi all,

During backup operations, on my Windows Server 2012 R2 (Hyper-v role installed) I find this warning in Event Log:

Event ID 51: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk5\DR43 during a paging operation.

How could I solve this issue? or Could I safely ignore this message?

Just for information, before latest OS Update Rollup installation, we also found the event below:

Event ID 157: Disk 5 has been surprise removed.

Thanks a lot,

David

Windows Server Backup (2008R2) deleted ALL previous copies when backup disk (1TB) was full

Hi all,

As the title says, 2 days ago my Windows Server Backup erased ALL of my previous backups when the disk was full. I was under the impression it was supposed to only delete the oldest backups first to make room for more copies. I have attempted to recover backups from before 2 days ago, but there is nothing available for dates older than 30 November 2016.

On the 7th September 2016 I had the following backups:  221 copies available  Oldest available: 25 February 2016.Capacity: 931.49 GB Total used space: 928.71    Space used by backup items: 300.04 Gb, Space used by backup copies: 628.67 Gb

Today I have the following:  2 copies available   Oldest available: 30 November 2016. Capacity: 931.49 GB Total used space: 309.65  Space used by backup items: 303.44 Gb, Space used by backup copies: 6.22 GB

Can someone please explain why this would occur, and if there's any options that I can select/un-select so that in future, when my backup disk is full, Windows Server Backup doesn't automatically erase ALL of my backups again?

Also, is there any way I can get these backups back?

Regards,

Michael

VSS Error when trying to backup Server 2012 R2

We receive the following errors when trying to perform a backup of a Hyper-V guest, running Windows 2012 R2.

<Event>

Source:        vmicvss

Date:          12/5/2016 11:23:33 AM
Event ID:      2
Task Category: None
Level:         Error

Description:
The VSS writer WIDWriter failed with status 8 and writer specific failure code 0x800423F4.
</event>

I have listed the vss providers and found that WIDWriter is showing a Failed state with a Non-retryable error.  I have restarted the WID Writer service with temporarily resolved the error but it returns upon the next backup job.  I have also restarted the server with no change.

How do we go about fixing the underlying VSS error on this service?

Thanks,

John

Windows Server 2012 R2 Backup Failing.

Hello all,

I would like to ask for some help regarding the system backup on a Windows Server 2012 R@ which is failing, either when I run it manually or scheduled. I also run WSUS on this same server. There're a few things that I have done before the backups stopped working and I think they are related. I would like to know if anyone could help me on how to fix this. Thanks.

1. I reinstalled WSUS and WID

2. I changed the Local drive which the backups are exported.

When I look at the logs I see that there are a bunch of database errors at the time of the backup:

The backup operation that started at '‎2016‎-‎12‎-‎05T15:53:57.698000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '0x8078006B'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Hello,

I am working on a new AD server. Have installed windows server 2012 r2 and promoted. Now I need to copy all files from old 2008 r2 AD to new 2012 r2 AD. How best do I do it considering that old server is in use and daily changing files in shared drive. Is there some robocopy solution ? Also how do all security groups and permissions ?

OKay guys,

I have no idea what is wrong here. I cannot get .Net 4.6 or higher to install on this server.

Microsoft updates says my computer is up-to-date. I have restarted multiple times to ensure there are no other updates needed.

I have installed or attempted to install this KB and every KB associated with it. Still nothing/it says that update is not applicable to my computer.

What do I do?

Windows Backup - Missing recovery dates

Windows Server Backup 2012 loosing all previous backups nightly

$

Hello,

I have a virtual 2012 R2 file server running on ESX 5.5, and recently I've started to have the following problem. Every night the server will run a backup onto an iSCSI target at the scheduled time, but each time it's proceeded by the following event in event viewer:

Event ID 24:

Backup started a fresh backup for volume '{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}' ('Esp') : [Reason: 'Volume size changed']. This may cause loss of older backup versions when backup completes.

True to its word, Windows Server Backup then trashes the previous backup, and completes a new one.  The destination is 4.1TB big, and it's currently only using just over 1.3TB, so space isn't an issue there.

I don't know when this started as I only get email notifications for event IDs which signify failure, all I know is that I can only perpetually restore files from the previous night. This wouldn't be too bad if it was for just disaster recovery, but I work in education, and Students / Staff have a habit of loosing things!

I tried deleting the schedule, and then re-creating it (letting WSB format the disk), but no joy. Is there anything else I can try?

Kind Regards,

Mike

Server 2012 Backup only shows past 3 days

$

Hello all,

On one of the servers I manage, (Server 2012) the restore wizard in Windows server backup only shows the past 3 days of backup available for restore. We have been using the same USB drive for backup for nearly a year and up until last week the restore wizard showed backups going back for that entire time. It is a 1 TB drive and the server we are backup up only has around 250 of space used. I have not noticed any errors in the backup for a long time and I check it at least once a week.

wbadmin get versions also only shows the past 3 backups.

Also, the Recover Catalog wizard is not available in the GUI for windows backup.

I have tried to run wbadmin restore catalog, but I am not sure of the syntax to use when a dedicated drive is being used for backup. All of the documentation I can find for that command seems to assume that you are using either a drive letter or a network share as a backup destination.

As this device has about a years worth of backups on it, I would really hate to lose the ability to restore these files. The client is a CPA firm and it is not unusual for them to ask me to restore a backup from many months ago. On the bright side, we do have a cloud backup system as well which seems to be working fine.

Thanks,

Mike

Windows Server 2016 backup to 2 hard disks

Hi all

Just need some help with a windows server 2016 backup issue (if it is an issue at all)

So I've scheduled windows server 2016 to backup to 2 different hard disks, the 1st hard disk is inside the server and the second hard disk is a usb disk. The have at least backed up 1 to both disks, however since inception it has only continued to backup only to one hard disk (primary internal). Both disks are plugged in. The USB disk is meant to be offsite daily backup.

Any advice appreciated.

Windows server 2012 R2 incremental backup to network share problem

I have set up Windows backup on a server 2012 to backup the full server to a NAS.

It is setup to make incremental backups but once in a while it start doing a full backup.

This is very annoying because it is almost 1TB data.

Why does it make a full backup sometimes and not just incremental backups and how do I fix this?

wbadmin

I am trying to make a scheduled backup job to my qnap NAS shared network drive.

In the qnap I have created a user administrator and given it the exact same password aa for my windows server administrator

I made a shared folder on the qnap and gave qnap user administrator r/w to this folder.

From a PC I try to access this folder it asks me for a login and password I give the administrator user and password I just made and I get access to the folder, thus proving the login details.

I know the server login is good as I can access the server with it

Now when I try to create a scheduled job in wbadmin I can select the network drive and enter the the credentials I made on the qnap.

so far no problem the last step wbadmin does is try to create the job and fails with error "the user name or password is invalid

How is this possible I have just tested both and they worked and they are identical for both the server and the NAS.

This appears to be a mega bug in the wbadmin software and where can I download a patch for this bug. I am amazed they didn't discover this in their testing before releasing the software

I did try to use "access control" but in Microsoft's wisdom they have greyed this option out. extremely clever of them ... NOT

Backing up Linux VM using Hyper and DPM 2012 R2

$

Hi,

I have few linux VMs hosted on server 2012 R2 hyper-v, which I backup using DPM 2012 R2. Backups are running fine but the problem is whenever DPM starts backing up the Linux VM, hyper-v saves that vm and restore it again in a few minutes.

Saving a running VM disconnects applications that VM is serving. I have installed latest version of "Linux Integration Services" and now I can see that DPM does shows that VM is 'Online' which was 'offline' previously but still whenever I fire a backup on DPM it saves my VM and starts backup.

Is it possible to backup Linux VM without save/restore process?

Dhananjay

WBAdmin Logs Full Backups as Incrementals

$

Hi

We are backing up a 2012 R2 server using WBAdmin. The backup is written to a network share on a Linux box, where it's written to tape using a backup system on that Linux server.

I understand that WBAdmin will only perform full backups when writing to a network share, and the full backup gets overwritten each backup. Testing shows this to be the case.

However, the WBAdmin log shows an incremental being performed, and it only reports a small amount of data being backed up.

Despite this log, I've run a test restore from the linux network share, and a full backup of all volumes is being performed. Also the Linux server shows the expected number of .vhdx files of the expected size.

Is this know behavior, something to do with the network share full-only restriction clashing with the you-can-run-any-schedule-as-long-as-it's-a-14-day-incremental non-configurable nature of WBAdmin?

Should I be concerned that the logs are incorrect despite test restores working?

hal.dll issue after system restore from symantec

Hi Guys, i had a issue this morning. My Esxi server got crashed and file server (Server 2008R2)virtual machine was down. i had rebuild a new VM on same name and had done system restore using symantec backup and restore(system state backup is schedule for this server). The restore was successful but when i start the VM, i see hal.dll file missing or corrupted. For now i had again rebuild the VM and added the old vmdk files to this VM and installed the necessary services again and made it available to the users. but i want to figure out the issue.

Did anyone faced this kind of issue in your environment.

Any suggesstions are welcome
