Best backup policy Windows 7/10 and 2003 server

Hello.

I have around 10 machines running windows 10 and windows 7. I make backup of several folders and outlook pst files from clients with default backup tools of windows on a share folder in a windows 2003 server. The hard disk on which the backup is made is 2TB but it fills up quickly because the clients' outlook files are very large and the truth is that I do not know how you could make these copies in the simplest way possible. What do you advise me?

Windows Storage Server 2012 Bare Metal Restore

Hi. We have bought a Thecus W5810 device and it runs Windows Storage Server 2012. Most of the computers in our small business are setup with multiple hard drives. We would like to be able to back them up in a way that we can someday do a bare metal restore of it. Currently, we cannot get the bare metal restore to work properly on computers with multiple disk drives. Is it possible to perform that type of restore? Can you help us figure out what settings are necessary to complete our goal?

Thank you!

hyperV VM backup failing using Veeam B&R - VSS writer error

friends i am using veeam B&R for backip up my VMs and my infra is very beefed up IBM servers which are getting backed up on a storage device .. but my jobs are failing .. it hass never happened that my job gets completed properly .. things like .. VMs restarting, VMs getting berry slow, VM backup error - VSS writer fatal error etc.

i check with Veeam engineer with a case and after his 10 days research he said its Msoft issue and i should knoe their doors. below are few errors which i get when backup job failed for VMs... there is nothing common in VMs failing .. any random VM fails...

1. VSS writers inside virtual machine 'CLIENT VM' failed to perform BackupComplete to its shadow copy (VSS snapshot) set: A function call was made when the object was in an incorrect state for that function (0x80042301). (Virtual machine ID 20A3EAB9-89A6-4BC9-8AA5-96AAE3956610)

2. Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and hypervisor integration components version)
Failed to create snapshot (Microsoft CSV Shadow Copy Provider) (mode: Crash consistent) Details: Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and hypervisor integration components version)
Error: Guest processing skipped (check guest OS VSS state and hypervisor integration components version)

MY all VMs have updated integration components.

3. this is very frequent:      Failed to create snapshot (Microsoft CSV Shadow Copy Provider) (mode: Veeam application-aware processing) Details: Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_FREEZE'. The writer's timeout expired between the Freeze and Thaw events. --tr:Failed to verify writers state. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.
Retrying snapshot creation attempt (Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_FREEZE'. The writer's timeout expired between the Freeze and Thaw events. --tr:Failed to verify writers state. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.)
Queued for processing at 12/16/2016 3:40:31 AM
Task has been rescheduled
Unable to allocate processing resources. Error: Writer 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer' is failed at 'VSS_WS_FAILED_AT_FREEZE'. The writer's timeout expired between the Freeze and Thaw events. --tr:Failed to verify writers state. --tr:Failed to perform pre-backup tasks.

not sure what to do and what not .. VSS writers are checked by Veeam engineer on host as well as VMs and as per him all are fine.

guys can you help as VMs getting down is really creating  issues for me.

Thanks, Happiness Always

Server 2012 (Not R2) Event ID 157

Hi Everyone, I am running Server 2012, (Not R2) and I have been using hot swap removable esata drives for backups.

(Rotated every day 5 days)

This has always worked just fine, (about 3 years)  when I would remove them, I would see a Event ID 157 in logs and just ignore. (disk 0 surprised removed)

Now at I am starting to see an actual Pop Up Info Screen that says: (Showing Pic from Internet)

windows-detected-hard-disk-problem. Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact the computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk.

Which disk is failing?
The following hard disks are reporting failure:
Disk Name: ST310005 28AS SCSI Disk Device    (MY Actual Backup Drive)
Volume: Unknown

The drives are not failing, the backup work just fine, this just started, seems to be after one of the MS updates, but really not sure, other than it has just started not more that a week ago.

Has anyone else had this problem?, can I just select Don't ask me about this problem again?

     Thank You in Advance!

Error with my new Seagate external drive

$

Hi. So I'm not a computer whiz, but I got a new seagate external hard drive for Christmas since my HP Stream 360's internal drive is so small. I am running Windows 8.1 with a 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor. I have no idea if that means anything, but it might be useful to you, it might not be.

So I got this driver and tried to download Sims4 on it. It got about 20% done before it said that there was an error with the hard drive location and that it had to be fixed. So, I just furrowed my brow and told it to restart again. It restarted and got to about 30% before it did the same thing. I did the same action and it refused to go to the location I wanted it to go. So, this morning I did some research on why it wasn't working and I found that I had to partition it and open volumes? I have no idea what those are, but what I gathered is that it is so you can actually use the disk space itself. I shrugged and followed what the directions told me to do. When they got to the part of "New Simple Volume" I tried to click on it to open the space but it was in that annoying greyed out text instead of the black usable text. So, I did some more research and tried to find why it wasn't working and just decided to fiddle with it myself.

I clicked on the driver name instead of the volume space and tried to initialize it. I used both options, but they both said "Data error(cyclic redundancy check)". Well great, more words that I do not understand whatsoever. I go to your website and find a how-to guide for how to fix it, but it was for a Linux, which I do not have, so I'm not sure if it applies to my system or not. What my question is, after all that information, what am I doing wrong and how do I get my computer to recognize the brand new driver i just received.

If there are any step-by-step instructions I can follow or anything, that would be great.

Thanks,

Sen

About two weeks ago my backup stopped working on my Hyper-V host using Windows Server backup.  The backup Windows show no backups, and the logs just state that the backup engine stopped.  If I try to run a manual backup it fails with the message below.

Windows Server 2016 Services terminate unexpectedly - then missing VSS writers.

This started a month ago when I noticed my backups started failing.  Turns out the System and Hyper-V vss writers were missing.  Had to reboot to bring them back.  One month later, same issue.

I can also state there are a number of services that Terminate unexpectedly before these events happen.  Afterwards I can't run backups because of the missing writers.

They are:

Connected Devices Platform
COM+ Event System
Windows Font Cache
Network List
Network Store Interface
Windows Time
WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery

They all appear to restart ok automatically but backups won't run.

Server 2012 R2 - Can't restore from .vhdx file. Please help!

Hi all,

I'm using Windows Server 2012 R2. The Windows Backup functions worked very well in the past. I have 114 copies and I have restored successfully 5 times.

But from 2 days ago, The Restore function is not working properly.

- My 4TB HDD for backup, it's appear as a normal partition with name "dcsvr 2016_08_28 17:15 DISK_01", when open I see a folder "WindowsImageBackup".

- When I run restore function with "This Server",  I got message"Unable to browse Data (D:). Windows Backup can't find a shadow copy of the backup set on storage location"

- when I run restore function with "A backup stored on another location", I got message"The backup location specified does not contain any backup. Specify another backup location."

I'm really in trouble with this issue. Please help me!

Thanks,

Thai

wbadmin

I am trying to make a scheduled backup job to my qnap NAS shared network drive.

In the qnap I have created a user administrator and given it the exact same password aa for my windows server administrator

I made a shared folder on the qnap and gave qnap user administrator r/w to this folder.

From a PC I try to access this folder it asks me for a login and password I give the administrator user and password I just made and I get access to the folder, thus proving the login details.

I know the server login is good as I can access the server with it

Now when I try to create a scheduled job in wbadmin I can select the network drive and enter the the credentials I made on the qnap.

so far no problem the last step wbadmin does is try to create the job and fails with error "the user name or password is invalid

How is this possible I have just tested both and they worked and they are identical for both the server and the NAS.

This appears to be a mega bug in the wbadmin software and where can I download a patch for this bug. I am amazed they didn't discover this in their testing before releasing the software

I did try to use "access control" but in Microsoft's wisdom they have greyed this option out. extremely clever of them ... NOT

Server 2016 bare metal restore

$

Just ordered a new Dell Server and installed Server 2016 with 2 Virtual Servers (both 2016), setup the Windows Backup on the hardware installed server, backing up to USB Drive.  Crashed the server (I wanted to test the restore capabilities), unfortunately Bare Metal Restore is not working.  It wants me to use a repair/installation disk, I am using another USB Drive with the installation ISO but it wants me to create a disk.

Is the repair disk required to do a bare metal restore on Server 2016?

I did not purchase the server with a DVD/RW so I will have to purchase 1 tomorrow along with DVD's to attempt to create a repair disk.  I will update the post afterwards and let you know how it goes, in the interim any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

can't backup partition > 2 TB with windows server backup in windows server 2016 std

Just received a new dell server that will replace our current main server in the next month or so. Have installed WS 2016 standard, but may have to replace with WS 2012 R2 if our EMR vendor doesn't begin supporting WS 2016 by then; this post is likely relevant to both.

The new server has a single 3.27 TB RAID 10 partition, and the old server running WS 2012 (not R2) has a single 1.6 TB RAID 5 partition.

Our normal backups from the old server are nightly LTO full backups on weeknights, with a monthly image backup for disaster recovery to NAS using novabackup server edition, for which we have a single license.

I would like to use windows server backup to make full bare metal recovery backups as needed during configuration of the new server to an internal dell RD1000 removable HD, an external USB 3 HD and the NAS unit, then transfer the license for novabackup to the new server when we retire the old server, and start using the internal LTO-7 tape drive on the new server, with continued monthly image backups to the NAS unit.

The partition on the new server currently has only 22GB data, as is primarily the OS installation with some dell utilities and minimal other software.

Windows server backup fails after attempting to back up the RAID 10 partition to the internal RD1000 HD with the following error -

Backup of volume C: has failed. Volumes larger than 16777216 megabytes cannot be protected.

WSB ran without error backing up to the NAS unit, but with a warning that the backup could not be protected. I have a few new USB 3 external HDs on order, so can't test them yet, but hope that they will work as well.

What is causing this problem? The RAID 10 partition volume size is listed as 3349.49 GB in Disk Management, so not sure where the incorrect volume size originates. I didn't see any options to turn off protection of the backup to the internal RD1000 removable HD.

Thanks

Too Many Consume Disk Space on My Server

$

Hi Everyone,

I've faced one issue last month. Firstly, I've noticed my AD Server's free space was less than 10 % .So,I was increased my AD System Root Space to 60 GB. after passing a few weeks, I have faced it again. I was noticed that following services are running on my servers .

1.Volume Shadow Copy (VSS)

2.Unused File & Storage Service

3.Unused Windows update policy

4.Unused Event log Records Trapping

5.Unused Services(e.g.TeamViewer,....) are running

As my understanding Microsoft AD should not consume many disk spaces, if we are only used AD and related Services ( DNS, Server Manager, Policy ,........).I've stopped and removed unnecessary services, but it does not work. So, anyone whose faces like this , please suggest to me. Thanks you.
