l develop two vss hardware provider. When l register one to vss service and execute "vshadow -p e:", the result is normal. However when l register the other and execute "vshadow -p e:", the command is giving the following error :
Creating the shadow (DoSnapshotSet)...
(Waiting for the asynchronous operation to finish...)
ERROR: during the last asynchronous operation.
- Returned HRESULT = 0x800423f8
- Error text: <Unknown error code>
- Please re-run VSHADOW.EXE with the /tracing option to get more details
In the event viewer, error event 12362 generate when abnormal.
EVENTVIEWER 12362:
A Shadow Copy LUN was not detected in the system and did not arrive.
Operation:
Exposing Disks
Locating shadow-copy LUNs
PostSnapshot Event
Executing Asynchronous Operation
Context:
Execution Context: Provider
Current State: DoSnapshotSet
With vsstrace I found that the snapshot destination disk reported the following error log many times when l failed.
"We find arrived disk \\?\SCSI#Disk&XXXX has no LUN id and is not a snapshot disk arrival."
When l was successful, the snapshot destination disk reported the following log.
"{XXXX} is in state 1 and has LUN id {XXXX} and disk no 2."
My OS is Windows Server 2016 Standard. All my writers are stable and no error.
What is the possible cause of 0x800423f8 error? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
I'm looking to have a logoff or shutdown script run wbadmin and back up my user profile folder, and a few folders here and there like my development web server's DocumentRoot. As I do JavaScript development with Node.js/npm and .NET development with NuGet to manage third-party libraries, I would like to not include the "node_modules" or "packages" folders that the package managers put the libraries into, since the code in them is easily retrievable and it'll save time to not back them up.
If I do something like "wbadmin -include:C:\Users\me,C:\xampp\htdocs -exclude:C:\*\node_modules,C:\*\Projects\*\packages", will that result in every node_modules being ignored, as well as any "packages" folder in my Visual Studio projects folders? Or is this not possible?
I've read that it's possible to run multiple scenarios of a backup?
I know that GUI (Windows Server Backup app) will only let you schedule just one backup plan.
I would like to plan something a bit more complex and would like to know how to do it.
I have two 4TB external drives and one Windows 2016 Server with one VM (3 volumes).
I would like to set up daily VSS Full backup for Monday-Friday.
On Saturday I would like to make a copy of Drive1 to Drive2, then set up new VSS full backup of the server on Drive1.
Reason for this is that VSS full backup won't save whole images each day, even if it's full backup (it only writes down differentials).
So I would like to ideally have is two full copies of server once a week and those differentials from Monday to Friday.
Hi All,
In our windows server 2008 r2, Default event log folder(C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs) was accidently deleted by one system admin. How to recover the deleted folder. Kindly support
I have two servers that seem to be artificially limited on the number of copies:
MaxShadowCopies is not configured on either. We do 2 copies a day. Neither seem to have skipped or missed a copy, but appear to just be "truncated" before they reached the disk limit.
i have an issue with vss service it's go to stop state every 30 minute approximately when we check the event viewer we find this event ID :7036
this issue cause the backup job of vss was not complete (using dataprotector application )
can anyone help me to resolve this issue ???
Hi everyone,
I got a problem when I use Avamar on some servers, only Windows Server Enterprise. The backup is not working, and when I'm looking into logs, I can see that I got an error about "System Writer". Indeed, when I launch "vssadmin list writers", I should see "System writer" but I don't.
I searched on internet to get some solutions, like giving some rights on some folders, but it changed nothing and then I saw that I could install the Fix484021 to fix it. But... the fix isn't working on my OS :( (link : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2911752/system-writer-is-missing-and-backups-fail-in-windows-server-2008)
I tried to contact the support by chat, but I don't get an answer from it because it's laggy.
Waiting for help.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Clément.

this error on two servers that have windows 2008 r2 sp1
After the Windows 10 version 1803 upgrade on April 30, 2018, my System Image Backup keeps failing withe two messages. "The backup failed" "The RPC server is unavailable (0x800706BA)".
Note that the System Image Backup worked before the upgrade. The upgrade completed OK and I have not found any other issues.
I checked that =1= The RPC (Remote Procedure Call) service in Services is active and running and =2= the DCOM (Distributed COM) is enabled. There used to be a SYSTEM disk when I did the defrag, the defrag does not show the SYSTEM disk in version 1803.
Is it a bug, or is there a fix or should I try the Image Recovery (that might fail as well).
Hi,
We have a situation while using WBADMIN in a scheduled task. We have a user, called Admin that belongs to the Domain Administrators. There's a task that performs a backup to a USB hard disk, defined in the Scheduled Tasks.
This is the command line
wbadmin start backup -BackupTarget:F: -include:C:, E: -allcriticall -SystemState -quiet
The operating system is Windows Server 2012.
The task is set to run with highest privileges and regardless if the user is logged on or not.
The task doesn't execute, however the command line does run if we run CMD as Administrator and execute the above command.
How can we solve this?

command: wmic cpu get currectclockspeed, maxclockspeed /every:1
continuously shows the same clock speed for current and maximum though they are not the same, in windows server 2016. how to get the correct current clock speed for my system.
Environment:
Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials running in VirtualBox in a Windows 7 host. Networking is configured and works fine.
Background:
My only backup needs are to copy the contents of two folders to a NAS folder every day at 2 AM.
I configured a backup schedule in Windows Server Backup (wbadmin) to a network location which is hosted as a Samba share on a Synology NAS.
For authentication, I created a backup user which has the same username and password as a user on the Samba share, with permission to read and write the backup folder. I added this user to the Backup Operators group.
Problem:
When I try to run the Backup Once operation to test my backup, I get the following error message:
"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination."
What I've tried:
I verified that the location is directly accessible in Windows by copying and pasting the address from the Windows Server Backup destination into explorer. Providing the backup user credentials opened the location and creating/reading files worked fine.
Adding the backup user to the Administrators group did not have an effect.
Update 2014-02-18
I checked the backup destination and was surprised to find that the scheduled backup actually completes successfully. However, Backup Once always results in the above error message. So the problem is confined to the "Backup Once" operation.
Hello,
Assuming we have DNS integrated with AD, does the system state backup contains the DNS objects?
I'm trying to restore some files from server backup on different PC.
Is this possible?
Backup was done on Windows server 2016.
I'm trying to restore some files on different PC, with Windows 10 Ent 2018.
I typed this command:
D:\>wbadmin start recovery -version:06/11/2018-20:00 -itemtype:File -items:'e:\stuff' -backuptarget:f: -recoverytarget:D:
Here is what I'm getting:
wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
Warning: The START RECOVERY command is not supported in this version of Windows.
The operation ended before completion.
Does it mean that recovery of single files or parts of backup can be done only on servers?
After reading the windows vshadow copy service documentation about read-only flag,
>>Immediately after IVssProviderCreateSnapshotSet::EndPrepareSnapshots, VSS will set the read-only, hidden, no drive letter, and shadow copy flags on all affected LUNs.
https://docs.microsoft.com/zh-cn/windows/desktop/VSS/the-shadow-copy-creation-process
In my opinion, the read-only, hidden, no drive letter, and shadow copy flags are set in volume rather than disk. As I execute attribute volume command of Diskpart, the result will show the situation of read-only, hidden, no drive letter, and shadow copy
on the volume.
But if my understanding is right, the copy will be executed during CommitSnapshots. During CommitSnapshots, the new volume(A copy of the volume of the source disk) on target disk will be produced. CommitSnapshots is executed after EndPrepareSnapshots. The flag
of the new volume is the same with the falg in EndPrepareSnapshots ?
And if volume does not exist in EndPrepareSnapshots, how to set read-only, shadow copy flag?
