Server 2008 R2 - Windows Server Backup all the sudden doing full, not incrimental

$

0

This problem all of the sudden started to happen. I would like the backups to incrementally be updated, instead it proceeds to do a full backup and takes a few hours. It use to be incrementally.

It is doing a custom backup (not full server - only file level)

Does it  have something with VSS Full Backup or Copy?

I should also mention I'm running acronis cloud backup on another machine and it's pulling files from this machine. I have tried changing acronis from resetting the archive bit to not and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I have also tried reading the forums, but can't seem to find anything.

You will see in the following screenshot it use to do incremental a while ago, but now for some reason it doesn't work. The change per day is only maybe 1-2gb.

Suggestions?

Restore shared folders intact

$

Hi All

I wish to copy my shared folders to another computer for redundancy and I wish for the shared state of the folder and its ntfs permissions, acl etc. to be preserved or an alternative solution.

I have restored an individual shared folder using server 2003 nt backup.  But its restored nut not shared!!

I have tried robocopy and researched other ways but cant get the full solution.

Nearest I can get is using allwaysync which can copy over all the ntfs permission and group state under certain circumstances.

I notice that the share name is missing from the shared folder which means people wont be able to access it. Im aware that having 2 shared folders both with the same name should not be possible.

I have restored a disk image of our data drive and I thought that a disk image would have the exact same share name etc. but even after a partition image restore the share names were gone and again the ntfs groups and permissions were available.

I need the shared state and name to be available.

Thanks for reading

Windows 2012 Server Backup fails to run

I have a newly installed Windows 2012 server and would like to take a backup using Windows Server Backup.  Unfortunately, the system returns the following error (see below).

I did some research and there was talk about the "hidden" partition not having enough free space. I checked and the hidden partition, which is 500 MB with 256 MB free. The main drive (C:) has 861 GB free.  It seems like there is plenty of free space.

Do you have any information on this error? Thanks in advance.

Bare Metal Restore

Hi,

What is the difference between Bare Metal restore and System Restore in Server 2008 R2?

I have created 2 hard disks in Hyper V.

C has the Server 2008 R2 and an app. I took bare metal back up of C and saved it on D drive. Then I removed C drive (assuming one HDD crashed). I tried to restore but could not do it.

Then added that hard disk again and tried and I was able to perform system restore. I dont get the difference Bare Metal restore and System Restore in Server 2008 R2.

What is inside a Volume Shadow Copy of a Full Server Backup in Windows Server 2008 R2

$

Hi Gurus,

I am taking regular Full Server Backups with Windows Server Backup on my 2008 R2 Domain Controllers. My question is basically, the Volume Shadow Copy of the Full Server Backup is approximately 4,5 GB.

What is inside the Volume Shadow Copy exactly and would I be able to restore my DC from the Full Server Backup if the Volume Shadow Copy doesn't exist ?

In which scenario would I need the Volume Shadow Copy ?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Managing multiple servers via ONE interface for Windows Server Backup 2008 R2. Where is the capability?

$

I have two problems with Windows Server 2008 R2 Backup.

1. You cannot manage multiple backup server instances from one place, even if the OS are the same version. Attempts to manage more than one server at a time result in the failure/collapse/bombing out of the MMC backup plugin. WHY? Why are we allowed to add a server and make a list only to find out the next time we open the MMC backup tool that all of the server names we stored in that MMC backup list are now gone and don't work? It instead lists the same server name (the local server you are currently in) for all of the server's in the list that had been prior listing as other server names. It would be extremely helpful if you could remotely manage more than one backup server instance at a time. Why is this not possible? Is it a bug in R2 or what? I am speaking about the GUI too, not the remote scripts. Is there a 3rd party interface that can enumerate the windows server backup instances on multiple servers in the same window or is there a microsoft bug fix I'm missing?

2. The other problem is the lack of being able to store more than 1 day's worth of backups via network share. Is this likely to change so that it can backup as much as possible up to the drive space available? I am aware if I backup to a drive volume that I can have backups build upon each other, but why is this not possible (and will it be possible) in the future for network shares?

I have recently added a new Seagate Backup Plus to my existing network backup and thought all I would have to do would be to plug it in and away it would go on the nightly backup routine.  Boy was I wrong!  I have finally been able to add it to the list of available drives and tried doing a back up and now it is giving me errors that say this:  System Reserved.  One of the backup files could not be created.  Detailed Error:  The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

I have no idea on what to do now!!!!!!

Windows Server 2008 backup fails Exchange 2010 consistency checks

Config:

Windows 2008 R2 with Mailbox server Role no DAG. We use Windows Backup and do a VSS full backup.

Problem:

We migrated from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 about a year ago. We moved all the mailboxes and decommissioned the 2003 server. Everything was fat dumb and happy. Recently I noticed  the backup is completing with warnings. The following events are logged in the application log.

Event ID 565:

The consistency check for the component 'b2ade010-1850-43af-bb4d-17d171c2e3ee'\'Microsoft Exchange Server\Microsoft Information Store\SERVER' has failed. The application 'Exchange' will not be available in the backup created at '?2013?-?07?-?14T19:00:16.849374000Z'. Review the event details for information about consistency check issues.

Event ID 9782:

Exchange VSS Writer (instance 39b6e5db-6cdd-4d52-b4da-21a4c67f2748:5) has completed the backup of database 'Mailbox Database' with errors. The backup did not complete successfully, and no log files were truncated for this database.

Exchange VSS Writer (instance 39b6e5db-6cdd-4d52-b4da-21a4c67f2748:5) has completed the backup of database 'Mailbox Database 0671427496' with errors. The backup did not complete successfully, and no log files were truncated for this database.

Exchange VSS Writer (instance 39b6e5db-6cdd-4d52-b4da-21a4c67f2748:5) has completed the backup of database 'Public Folder Database 2074630441' with errors. The backup did not complete successfully, and no log files were truncated for this database.

What I have tried so far:

I have run eseutil with every switch known to mankind. Everything comes back as good/no errors.

I have created a new mailbox database and moved the mailboxes. Then deleted the orginal db and created a new clean one. Makes no difference.

Checked the VSS Writers and they are all showing stable/no errors.

Re-registered the .dll's associated with VSS. Makes no difference.

Uninstalled Windows Backups and re installed. No difference,

Uninstalled Windows backup, rebooted, ran script from Microsoft to cleanup the Microsoft Exchange server extensions for Windows backup, then re installed Windows backup.  No difference.

Enabled/disable circular logging. No difference.

I am out of things to try. Anyone have any ideas on what to try next or what to look at?

We currently run a WS2012 Standard Host with a WS2k3 VM as well as a WS2k13 VM. We recently upgraded the host and added the 2012 VM. The Windows Server Backup is backing up the host components, drives and the WS2k3 VM perfectly, but is failing on the WS2k13 VM. I am trying to figure out why. I have attached the fail log as well as the successful log. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Successful:

Backup of volume C: succeeded.

Backup of volume D: succeeded.

Backup of volume G: succeeded.
