Windows Server 2016 Backup Server - Compacting Virtual Disks takes ages

0
0

I've seen and found similar post online and her but so far no one with an answer.

Windows Server Backup extremely slow while 'compacting the virtual hard disk(s)'
Compacting virtual hard disks

Running a Windows 2016 Server that has the hyper v role that I backup using the Windows Backup to backup the server to a local attached USB disk.

When I firstly create the backup job it takes quite some time because it needs to copy all the data, which is understandable. After that the incremental is done within a hour backing up 3 TB of data and 6 VMs, which is a great result.

Then after a while the backup disk is filling up and it will take for ever to finish a backup. Every day it will start to do a full and compacting the virtual hard which will take almost the whole day.

Windows Server 2003 -activation required after recovery

0
0

Running an old Server 2003. ( I know its not advised, but we are)

So hard disk completely fails over the weekend and we restore everything from backups fine.  One slight thing is that reactivation is required (because added a tape drive and a LAN card.

So activation doesn't work over the internet - server not there.  Phone up and of course I'm told its not supported any longer.

I saw on another forum the for another product that it could be possible that the server address is different, if you modify hosts file or DNS its possible to activate.

I was hoping that someone might know the server address used for activation that might have legacy ones.  I am really not sure how it works though so maybe this is not possible.

Any other suggestions would be more than welcome otherwise I will have to resort to a crack / unlicensed product key (or upgrade) aren't I?

Why are User Directories Missing From Backup

0
0

We have been backing up a Windows Sever 2012 R2 using Windows Server Backup

We have specified Backup with Bare Metal Backup, System State, System Reserved as well as the system disk and application disk.

This Backup was configured by the Domain Administrator and runs as a scheduled Task by SYSTEM.

When we recent tested the backup using the Restore to a new Machine, None of the User Accounts Restored. (C:\Users)

What are we doing wrong?

Scheduled Backup Fails Yet Manual Backup Succeeds

One of our clients with a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials server is suddenly having an issue with the scheduled backups failing yet the manual backups succeed. This has appeared out of the blue and both my colleague and I are unable to determine what might be the cause. The following is the log when it fails...

Windows Server Backup 2016 suddenly taking days to backup after KB4457127 - possibly USB 3.0 related?

0
0

I am now experiencing this on two different installations where Windows Server 2016 is the host operating system on Dell PowerEdge T620 servers with USB 3.0 interfaces running Windows Server backup.

The machines all host Hyper-V virtual servers.

I have been backing up using Windows Server 2016 Backup to external 8TB USB 3.0 drives. The FULL backups had been taking only about 4 to 6 hours and the incrementals were running in a matter of an hour or so.

Suddenly on two of my different customer installations the Windows Server backup is taking DAYS to run. After about 12 hours one my backups is at 27% of Volume 2 out of 3 volumes.

This all seemed to start AFTER installation of KB4457127 but I cannot say for sure.

I have tried different USB 3.0 external drives, even though the likelihood that two different facilities would suddenly both experience the exact same issue and it be a drive problem seemed unreasonable.

Anyone have any thoughts? Anyone else experiencing this?

WBADMIN Backup difference and details

Is there a difference between

WBADMIN START BACKUP -allCritical -SystemState

VS

WBADMIN SYSTEMSTATEBACKUP

True or false? Sounds like to me they both perform a Bare Metal Recovery AS well as a system state recovery ( and system state contains users info)

Also I have WBADMIN START BACKUP as a scheduled task running every saturday 0300hr at drive path D,after the first backup is every successive backup either an incremental or differential backup? or is it a complete re-write of the existing backup in that path? Or an entirely new backup

I am concerned about drive space.

Thank you in advance.

VSS System Writer missing on Windows Server 2008

Hello guys,

Since Septembter 13th we have backups failing on one of our 2008 servers. The problem is that, for some reason, the VSS System Writer has disappeared.

I have tried everything, re-registering the writers, changed permissions on COM Security, etc. None of them worked... Has anyone gone through this before? I also noticed that some updates were installed on the server the same day that the last successful backup happened (Sept 13th), so I am wondering if this was broken by an update...

Any help will be really appreciated!! Thanks so much in advance for your time!!  :)

Domain Controller Restore with DPM

Hi,
I have taken backup of Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controllers (PDC and DC) through SCDPM 2012. Its a bare metal backup which contains image of active directory.
I want to restore Domain controller DPM backup for test purpose.
Is there any specific procedure or precaution to follow during the restoration of Domain Controller?
I have read somewhere that there are two types of restores in Domain Controller, Authoritative and Non-Authoritative restore.
Can anyone suggest me the right procedure for recovering Domain Controller through Domain Controller through DPM??

Rohit

Hyper-V VSS Writer, State: [8] Failed, Last error: Retryable error

Hi All,

I am running Hyper V host on Win Server 2012 R2 with mixed guest VMs (2008, 2012). We keep facing a VSS issue as stated in the subject which leading to have failed Backup got he VMs through Windows Backup or even VERITAS Backup Exec.

When restarting the host or vmms.exe service,  Hyper-V VSS Writer state becomes stable with no error and Backup job will run successfully.

Windows Server 2003 R2 problem

We have a client that refused to migrate his Windows 2003 R2 64bit server. The server have AD, DNS and Exchange on it and is installed on vmware VM.After the last restart the server started giving error STOP: 0x0000001e (0), it cant boot and you can`t start save mode. Tried to recover it from backup, but even the last backup behaved the some way. Tried to repari it, tried chkdsk /r

There are no current minidump and enable loging did not generate txt into the windows directory. Sadly there is no manual procedure to recover this server and i`m not sure we will be able to rebuild it from scratch.

windows server backup overwrites new backups instead of old

0

My server running windows server 2008 R2 seems to overwrite the newest backups which it has never done before. The server has been doing daily backups for years and its oldest vss copy is from the beginning of 2017, but ever since the server crashed on October 8th its started to overwrite the latest backups. The server shows a list of recent backups from this week starting on October 9th but I can only access the backups from October 12th to the 18th which indicates its starting to overwrite its latest backups. How can I change the backup settings to overwrite the oldest backups instead of the newest.

I also want to include that it has overwritten backups from not only October but also the past few months. So now there is a giant gap of deleted backups from  01/27/2018 to 10/12/2018, the only backups that the server has saved currently is from 01/01/2017 to 01/26/2018 and its latest backups from this week which the server has started to overwrite.

Server 2008 R2 - VSS backup aborting because of ExpandForVerification freezes (SQLVDI and MSSSQLSERVER errors)

Hello all,

I’ve been struggling with one of the many VSS related problems during a backup operation on a 2008 R2 server from a third party software (it doesn't matter which one for the purpose of this).
I’ve already tried almost 99% of suggestions out there without getting a real solution so I dug down deep with vsstrace.exe and found out what’s happening:

[21:19:17.873 P:1BC8 T:2084 SECSECRC(1756)      GEN] ENTER[CVssSidCollection::IsSidAllowedToFire]
[21:19:17.873 P:1BC8 T:2084 SECSECRC(1882)      GEN] ExpandForVerification()
[21:20:11.576 P:1BC8 T:22B0 INCWRMPH(0875)   WRITER] ENTER[CVssWriterImpl::Lock]
[21:20:11.576 P:1BC8 T:22B0 INCWRMPH(0875)   WRITER] EXIT[CVssWriterImpl::Lock] Time spent: 00:00:00-0000; total: 0; HRESULT: 0
[21:20:11.576 P:1BC8 T:22B0 WRTWRTIC(2226)   WRITER] Aborting due to timeout

Look at timestamps: the “ExpandForVerification” is freezing (21:19), so all the VSS writer timers (that where started before) reach the 60 sec. timeout (21:20) and the whole backup is aborted. The Application Log gets populated with SQLVDI and MSSQLSERVER errors, but those are the consequence, not the cause, I didn’t get any useful information about them.

Now there are (random) days when all runs well and the backup completes successfully. In such cases all ExpandForVerification operations are IMMEDIATELY (milliseconds) followed by other operations, all runs smoothly without time gaps and that should be the normal behavior.

Unfortunately I could not find any documentation about these entries so my question is: what “SECSECRC” stand for? What’s happening during the ExpandForVerification event? What could freeze it? There’s a sort of “black hole” in the log where I have no informations about what’s happening.

Any suggestions or documentation references?
As per this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2996928/backup-task-fails-with-a-time-out-error-in-windows it seems quite similar to my situation, but the hotfix is not available (no more available) for Server 2008, is there a mirror elsewhere? did someone tested it?

Thanks!

Scheduled Full backup, but log says it was incremental

0
0
In Windows Server 2016, I scheduled Windows Server Backup to perform a full bare metal backup to be stored on a NAS every night. The NAS then copies the nightly backup from the primary HDD to one of five different hard drives every night. That way, the most recent five backups are always available on different HDDs. The Windows Server Backup log says that all backups but the first were incremental. Since Windows Server Backup replaces the backup on the primary NAS HDD with a new backup every night, if the backups are truly incremental, then they cannot be used to restore the server. Are these backups listed in the Windows Server Backup logs truly incremental, or does the "incremental" backup simply replace all older files in the backup to make each "incremental" backup the equivalent of a full backup? If this is the case, than each of the backups on the rotating 5 HDDs can be used to restore the server.

Domain Controller cannot synchronize with the Backup Domanin Controller

Dears,

I have 2 servers: Server 1 is Domain Controller and Server 2 is the Backup, they synchronize with each other. At the pass, 2 DCs run normally with windows server 2008 R2 for a long time (about 5 years). Recently, I upgraded the OS of 2 DCs to Windows server 2012 R2. After upgrading the OS, I upgrade 1 software (The Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 9.x to Veritas System Recovery 18.x )at Server 2 (The Backup DC). After that, I found 1 problem: If  have any change at the Server 1, the server 2 (The Backup) can not synchronize the change but If  have any change  at the Server 2 (The Backup), the Server1 still synchronize the change.

Anyone can help me to fix the problem.

Thank you very much.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Server Backup fails when tried to take System Image, Bare Metal Recovery backup using Windows Server Backup tool. I am trying to save the backup to a network shared folder. The Volume Shadow Copy and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider services are set to Manual.

The error message : The backup operation failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '0x80780021'. Please review the event details for a solution and then rerun the backup.

So far, I have tried the following:

1. Set the Shadow copy to use Maximum size as No Limit. (on both local C: drive and shared drive)

2. Ran chkdsk C: /f -  and found no errors

3. vssadmin list writers -  lists all the writers as No Error

Windows Server Backup 2016

Hi,

We have just installed a Windows 2016 Hyper-V server and I wanted to check if this version of Windows Server Backup can protect Hyper-V VMs running Windows 2008 R2 and later.  I also wondered if it could back up a VM running Windows 2008, although this may not be necessary yet.

Thanks

Chris
