WSE 2016 client fails to back up if C: drive is included

0

Hi

I have a small WSE 2016 system that has a single server and 4 clients. Three of the clients are Windows 10 and one is Windows 7. Everything is fine apart from Backup.

All the clients backup fully apart from one Windows 10 client. This one fails with "An unknown error prevented backup from completing successfully". However if I excludejust the C: drive and retain everything else the backup works fine. There are no errors in the Event logs on either side.

The failing client is a new UEFI based laptop, and of course the first thing I did was achkdsk /f/r which revealed no errors. I also tried sfc /scannowwhich also revealed no problems.

I have run out of ideas. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

Rick

Windows Server Backup to remote share fails with error "The device is not ready"

0
0

Hi,

I have a client who uses Windows Server Backup on a Server 2008 R2 installation. I have set up their backup to remote share on another server. Both servers seem to be fine but when the backup starts I get the error "The device is not ready".

Going through the event logs I found errors during the time of the backup:

Event ID 129. Source vhdmp - description for event id 129 cannot be found. The following information was included with the event: \Device\RaidPort1

Event ID 57. Source Ntfrs - The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.

Event ID 15. Source Disk - The device \Device\HardDisk1\DR4, is not ready for access yet.

(the above HardDisk1 doesn't exist. the server only has a single hard drive in it so I am not sure what this error is referring to)

Event ID 3. Source FilterManager - Filter Manager failed to attach to volume '\Device\HarddiskVolume6'.  This volume will be unavailable for filtering until a reboot.  The final status was 0xc03a001c.

Going through the Windows Backup event log I see the error below:

The backup operation that started at '‎2013‎-‎08‎-‎04T10:00:06.701517900Z' has failed with following error code '2155348041'

I had a search around and found the log files in C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup. In the log files I see the error:

Error in backup of C:\tempsys\audit\WD123.zip.0183 during write: Error [0x800700a1] The specified path is invalid.

This error occurs multiple times and refers to many different files and folders.

I have noticed that if I stop the backup schedule and delete the backup files then recreate the backup job the backup will run successfully for a night and then fail on subsequent backups. Because of this it doesn't seem like it is a hardware issue or else it would fail even after recreating the backup job.

I have searched the forums and found nothing that relates to my issue. the server is not a Hyper-V host or VM. Neither Backup Exec or AV are installed on the server. I have gone through the files/folders randomly and checked that the backup user has permissions on the files - they have all checked out fine. I am not backing up the System drive, just a folder on the C drive.

I am really at a loss to explain what is causing this and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Windows Server 2012 R2: Backup Failing "Failure in Creating a Directory on the Backup Storage Location"

0

First post, please excuse any mistakes I make in posting this.

My friend & I work in "infrastructure" together and we've encountered a problem that seems like it should be so simple to fix, but we've been banging our heads for about a week now on it, so I'm hoping with the collected community brain "network" we can get some guidance or a solution on this one.

We got hit with some malware and had to rebuild some servers, and unfortunately we cannot seem to get them backing up as they were prior to the rebuild.

The server is running Windows Server 2012 R2 and has two SANs connected to it, one is the backup. We have the SAN online and can see it, navigate into and around it, create folders/files, etc, but the backup process fails every single time with a message that, "There was a failure in creating a directory on the backup storage location...".

This seems very "permissiony" to us, as if the process can't create the folder it's dumping the backups in because it doesn't have the access rights to do it. So we went in and made sure that admins have full access, they do, we even added our specific admin accounts and the admin service account to have full access, and both of us can verify our full access, and yet the problem continues to persist.

This is my best effort to adequately describe the problem. I hope this makes sense, and someone out there can help us figure this one out. Please feel free to ask for more info and I'll do my best to oblige.

Thanks in advance!

Server 2016 Backup Fails

I have a Windows Server 2016 host server that has virtual machines on it.

Whenever I try to backup the virtual machines, the backup job fails. I tried to backup the Hyper-V vm's and the individual files, both types failed.

In the event viewer I'm getting this;

The backup operation that started at '‎2016‎-‎11‎-‎08T14:07:10.577950600Z' has failed with following error code '0x80780049' (None of the items included in backup were backed up.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

and this;

Cryptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.

Details:

AddLegacyDriverFiles: Unable to back up image of binary Microsoft Link-Layer Discovery Protocol.

System Error:

Access is denied.

Windows Server 2016 Backup Server - Compacting Virtual Disks takes ages

0

I've seen and found similar post online and her but so far no one with an answer.

Windows Server Backup extremely slow while 'compacting the virtual hard disk(s)'
Compacting virtual hard disks

Running a Windows 2016 Server that has the hyper v role that I backup using the Windows Backup to backup the server to a local attached USB disk.

When I firstly create the backup job it takes quite some time because it needs to copy all the data, which is understandable. After that the incremental is done within a hour backing up 3 TB of data and 6 VMs, which is a great result.

Then after a while the backup disk is filling up and it will take for ever to finish a backup. Every day it will start to do a full and compacting the virtual hard which will take almost the whole day.

Scheduled Backup Fails Yet Manual Backup Succeeds

One of our clients with a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials server is suddenly having an issue with the scheduled backups failing yet the manual backups succeed. This has appeared out of the blue and both my colleague and I are unable to determine what might be the cause. The following is the log when it fails...

Hi,

I have event log repository nearly 300GB  stored on E drive on windows server 2016.

Daily basis I'm copying event logs to the same repository.

I want to take backup of 300GB data in incremental backup method using wbadmin tool.

I have F drive with 600GB contains no files. I can avail F drive for repository backup

Does Wbadmin tool support incremental features? if yes means share the steps for configuring incremental backup.

Please assist.

System Writer missing

I have a backup that is failing to backup the System State on a 2016 server, we have identified that the System Writer is missing by running VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS. We have been through the articles that reregister the writers, set permissions on various folders:

First

cd /d %windir%\system32
net stop vss
net stop swprv
regsvr32 /s ole32.dll
regsvr32 /s oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 /s vss_ps.dll
vssvc /register
regsvr32 /s /i swprv.dll
regsvr32 /s /i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 /s es.dll
regsvr32 /s stdprov.dll
regsvr32 /s vssui.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml4.dll
vssvc /register
net start swprv
net start vss

Second

Takeown /f %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /a
icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(RX)"
icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant "NT Service\trustedinstaller:(F)"
icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant BUILTIN\Users:(RX)
Takeown /f %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\* /a
icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(RX)"
icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant "NT Service\trustedinstaller:(F)"
icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant BUILTIN\Users:(RX)

net stop cryptsvc
net start cryptsvc

Using procmon I believe that we have narrowed it down to rights on the folder "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files" as Procmon shows "Accessed Denied on "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files\active". I have given "Network Service" full permissions on "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files" but still I get the access denied. Can anyone offer any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Windows server backup is not running, with no failure messages

I'm struggling with a problem that i've yet to find a solution to.  I have a brand new Windows Server 2012 R2 installation.  I've created a scheduled local backup to a local Hard drive, not a network location.  The backup configures and schedules properly, but when the time arrives for it to run, it never runs.  If I check the Scheduled tasks, I see the backup task changes from ready to queued.  The backup job shows as not running, not failed, not anything.  Wbadmin just shows next backup as being tomorrow, with no successful backup and no failed backup.  Each day is the same thing.  If I run the backup manually, it will run successfully every time.  I have tried to search for similar problems and found a few similar threads, but none of the suggested solutions have done anything.  Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this?

"Access denied" trying to restore files from backup

I've got Windows Server Backup on Server 2012 R2, and it's run flawlessly for years.

Last week I copied a folder from another computer to the server, and modified permissions on it so that only 2 users had access to it (a user, and the Administrator).

When I tried a test recovery from the nightly backup (Windows Server Backup), I suddenly cannot browse ANY previous day's backup, even prior to the new folder existing.  When I expand the server name, I now just get:

"Unable to browse System Reserved. Access is denied" and
"Unable to browse Local disk (C:). Access is denied

These errors only showed up after adding the user folder last week, and modifying its permissions.

Once I saw that error, I went back to the permissions on the new folder and added the user "SYSTEM", with full permissions.  But it has made no difference.

Has anyone ever seen this before?

Thanks

Hyper-V VSS Writer disappers form writers list

Hi all,

could someone help to find out what is causing this issue.

I have a third party backup solution (EMC Avamar) which uses in background Hyper-V VSS Writer to make backups.

Recently I've being getting problems that it couldn't make backup and there been found by EMC Support that periodically the Hyper-V Writer disappears from a list of VSS Writer:

There are no suspicious EventLogs and I also have tried to completely disable Avamar Backup and anyway overnight it disappears.

Recovery of a bare-metal backup of a Hyper-V machine to a newer Hyper-V host

I'm testing out scenarios of backing up and restoring our DC. One of the two DCs we have is a VM (running Server 2016) on a 2012R2 Hyper-V host.

The host is a bit outdated, but at the time we do not have resources to upgrade it.

Should something bad happen, the restore operation would likely be performed on a newer Hyper-V host. As such, I've been testing restore operations on my own Windows 10 machine with Hyper-V enabled, and I could NOT restore a bare-metal backup of the DC. Specifically, all attempts end with the 0x80070057 error. If I attempt the recovery on the original host (2012R2 that is) then it is successful. This, to me, suggests that the Hyper-V configuration version might be important here. Unfortunately, it's while it's possible to upgrade the configuration version for an imported machine, it's impossible to create a VM with an old configuration version from the get-go. But this seems to be what I need to perform the recovery.

Does this mean that bare-metal of an older Hyper-V VM can't be used on newer version of Hyper-V? This seems like a very VERY big oversight!

Alternatively, what's the best way to back up the DC for a potential critical scenario? (Ideally I'd like to have periodic, automatic backups in Azure...)

Over 1000 Files/Folders - Error/Limitation?? Tedious Restore Ahead?

Hello everyone,

For years I've been telling my client that he needs to invest in a better backup solution other than Windows Server Backup.  This weekend I found out why, and it was something I did not know beforehand.  Upon his server crashing, he had a WD backup drive (an older one) that we used to perform weekly backups to that had basically all of the files and folders on his server backed up to.  He uses a sophisticated tax program, as he is an accountant.  Inside one of the folders of this program where his tax data for all of his clients is stored, there were a few hundred folders.  Well, I went to restore the main folder of this program which had the few hundred subdirectories under it.  Upon starting the restoration, it came up with a message/error that stated something to the effect that this folder has more than 1000 files/folders under it and that Windows Server Backup was limited to restoring 1000 files/folders at a time and nothing more.  The question I have is, am i really going to have to restore this data folder by folder?  Is there any way around this with the backup that we have here?  It is scary to think that I may have to literally go through the 10 step restore wizard in Windows Server Backup for 100's of folders and do each restoration individually.  Also, why would Microsoft create a backup solution for a server that has this limitation??

Server 2012R2 Backup Completed with Warnings

Hello.  We have a Windows Server 2012 R2 server that is having an issue completing backups successfully.  If we were to reboot the server, we will get one successful backup but then all subsequent backups will be Completed with warnings until the server is rebooted.

The server is Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard running Hyper-V.  The vhd and vhdx files backup with out issue but when trying to backup the virtual servers online, we get the backup failed to complete.

The full error is Completed with warnings.  Backup succeeded but some components backed up were inconsistent in the snapshot.  The application this component belongs to may not function properly after this backup is used for recovery.

Backup windows server 2008 fails - shadow copy - NTFS system partition

I want to back up my windows server but it fails when making shadow copy. I have seen that it only fails when I want to make complete backup of system (and not if I select only D or E drive).

I think that the problem is the empty 100 mb system drive that is not NTFS. Any ideas? There could be also another reason.

It fails also If I select only C drive because some system files also gets involved?

How to take Windows Server Backup logs and put them into a file readable in SQL?

Hi

First time poster but I can not for the life of me find the answer to my question.

I am attempting to take all the log files from Windows Server backup and get them into a format that I can add to our SQL database.

Any help on how to do this would be great.

I need a way to do it for Server 2008 and 2016 if possible.

Thank you in advance.
