Disk space alerts - Is it possible to increase the minimum spare space before it deletes old backups

$
0
0

I have a drive used for backup that currently has 12% spare disk space and is generating alerts that disk space is low. I do not want to modify the criteria for the disk space alert as this is a standard configuration used for many servers.

What I would like to do is tell Windows Server Backup to always maintain a larger amount of free space on the disk. It currently has 76 backups on the drive. We don't need that many.

Is there a way to instruct Windows Server Backup to leave more free space?

unable to take server backup

I had tried to take server backup by logging in as administrator, on using thewbadmin command a error message - access denied run as administratorto take backup .

I also used the run as command and logged in but same error is being displayed.

Unable to take backup using server backup option in the Start>All programs> administrative tools >Windows Backup

Restore second volume to offline server.

$

I Have two HP ML 110 G6 server's running SBS2011 one is production and one is available for disaster recovery, I have licences for both.

On the production server I have two raid 1 Arrays, the first array at 250GB is split into two partitions, OS (C:) and data (D:). The second array is set up as one partitions (G:) on a 500GB Disk. Total 4 Disks.

The second server is set up the same except that there are only 2 Disk's. 1 250GB and 1 500GB. (due to cost)

I can do a restore of the server to the offline server and this boots up and works, however I can not restore the volume containing the G: drive.

I have tried to changing the disk ID to match that of the production server.

After restoring, to the Offline server, I have tried using the recovery procedure to restore Volume, but the Volume that I want to restore too is not listed.

Any help would be very useful.

Windows Server 2008 R2 backup fails unless I remove file from Windows\winsxs\FileMaps

$

I've read quite a number of articles on the backup failures associated with permissions, etc. associated with files in the \windows\winsxs\FileMaps directory. After trying them (including recommended patches) and finally locating a good troubleshooting email thread I moved all of the contents to a temp directory and then copied them back until the backup failed again. After a process of elimination I determined the single file creating the failure of the backup (failed starting 'System Writer') was due to the presence or error in the file:

C:\Windows\winsxs\FileMaps\programdata_microsoft_user_account_pictures_default_pictures_e70ab2484087f163.cdf-ms

Now I have successfully moved the user and programdata directories to my D: drive since I have a 120GB SSD and wish to keep C: storage to minimum. There are junction points to from C:\user and C:\programdata over to the D: directories physical paths and everything works perfectly with the exception of the backup. When I simply remove the file name shown above from the FileMaps directory the backup completes just fine. But I am worried that the absence of the file from the FileMaps directory could have an impact on the recovery of the backup image and just uncomfortable with the need to manually remove and replace this file for a backup to succeed.

The error info is shown:

Cryptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.

Details:
AddCoreCsiFiles : RtlConvertNtFilePathToWin32Path() failed.

System Error:
0xC0000039 (unresolvable).

List of NtBackup Event IDs?

$

I support many clients, some of which use Ntbackup still for some servers.

I wanted to know which eventIDs to look out for.

From what I see 8019 means end of job and that doesn't really tell us much else. Is there anything to differentiate a failure 8019 from a successful 8019? (Information vs warning/error?)

Are there other ones that I should be looknig out for?

I was hoping to script something together with eventtriggers.

Files, system and documents back-up.

Greeting everyone,

I have been ask to do some back-up on 3 PCs.

As a technician, I have done numerous back-ups in the past with older version of Microsoft and Apple products. However recently, I have been tasked to create a back-up on a Windows 7 PC and to rid the PC of all files and documents once the back-up has been done on an external HDD.

when I begin to back-up, I noticed that there are things like "first back-up/start back-up now" and "back-up". From what I have learned, the user have no idea if he had done before.

So my quires are as followed:

- What is the difference between "first back-up/start back-up now" and "back-up"?

- Which one of the two should I initial, based on the above given scenario?

- If I were to initial the first, Should I click on "Back up now" to fully back-up the PC after the former iscompleted?

Hope someone would answer me as I am stuck with this issue as I speak.

 Thanks and God Bless,

  Dagpeter

Windows server backup vs Exchange Databases vs 3rd party tool Open Source ARECA

$

Hi there!

The idea is to backup exchange databases. Areca backup open source software (http://www.areca-backup.org/) is unfortunatelly not an option because it can not handle opened/locked files, soo we came up with another idea:

Firstly backup the exchange databases with Windows Server backup tool which uses Volume shadow copy and then with ARECA backup what Windows server backup tool did.

Questions:
-Do you think the idea is good? Would you recommend sth else?
-I have question regarding doing backups with Windows Server Backup tool. In our desired backup scenario, where would
1stly backup exchange databases with WSB and then Areca should we use under VSS SETTINGS in WSB: Vss copy backup, right?
-Another thing which concerns me is when u choose on WSB to backup to a shared network folder you recieve an warning:
When yo use a remote shared folder as the storage destination for scheduled backups, each backup will erase he previous backup, and only the latest backup will be available.
Ok, can someone clarify the meaning of this message? If I understood right in this case you are only able doing FULL BACKUPs the hole time if the message is saying
that everytime backup will be deleted, right?

with best regards,

wbadmin backup fails on server 2012 std , reporting Drive Cannot Find the Sector Requested

$

I've recently installed two 2012 servers on HP ML350p Gen8.

Both giving the same error while trying to backup (system state , BMR and c:) , "the drive cannot find the sector requested".

What i already tried (without result):

* increase the system volume bij 1MB or 10MB ,since this seems to be a common fix for this issue-> giving me a "Parameter Error"

*removing /adding the multiple disks again via wbadmin enable backup -addtarget:[id]

*formatting the disks.

*removing the backup schedule and re-apply a new one

*chkdsk run on all disks

Can somebody advice a solution / cause for this behaviour? Below the error description.

Thx in advance!

DFSR downloading large files

I am replicating large files from one server to a hub.  When backups start DFS replication is paused and then continues after the backup is complete.  My question is if I was in the middle of downloading a large PST file and then the backups start and replication is stopped does the original PST download continue where is left off before the backups began or does it start over.  I have very large PST files they aren't completed downloaded before backups begin, some of these PST might take a couple days to download.

Windows Server 2008R2 Backup Question

$

My wife runs a small dental practice and we have a Dell Server running Windows 2008 Server R2. For disaster recovery we purchased 2 identical servers, one which we keep at home in case something happens to the one in the office. My IT guy when we set it up - did a Bare Metal Restore on the Home server to copy the exact configuration of the office server. I would periodically like to update or clone the server at home to the exact configuration in the office. What is my best option to do this?

Should I take a full server backup on a portable drive and do a Bare Metal Restore periodically on the server at Home or do I need to just copy the system state onto the server at home. The server at home has windows 2008R2 already setup.

I don't have a lot of computer experience, but can do basic backups and restore and don't want to pay my IT guy every time I have to do something like this.

Any help in simple laymans terms would be greatly appreciated

Urgent: Windows Server 2008 Standard edition

Hi,

FYI We are Microsoft Mediaroom Developer in IPTV industry. We're having a difficulty to do the recent Personal Server installation.

Our attention on this email is to activating Windows Server 2008 Standard edition, Retail (NOT volume license) edition. Where do we get the product keys for that?

As you all know, the MRPS 1.x license didn’t include the operating system; we had to install the OS (Win2008R2 Enterprise) and database (SQL2008 Enterprise) ourselves and then install the MRPS software on it.  There was no specific hard-coded limitation on which build of the OS and database were in use.

MRPS 2.x requires me to merely activate the pre-installed OS (Win2008R2 Standard) and DB (SQL2008 Standard), and – according to the very specific documentation on this matter – the installed editions are Retail editions, which means Volume License keys and MSDN keys won’t work.

FYI we just called MSDN to confirm that it would include the correct keys, and they’re telling us that no, it won’t.

We need to ask Microsoft how we're supposed to get product keys that will work.

  • We can purchase Volume Licensing keys, which *will not work* in Retail editions software.
  • We can purchase MSDN, which gives us keys for Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition and/or WS2008 Web edition, both of which *will not work* in Standard edition software.
  • We cannot purchase WS2008 or SQL2008 Retail keys anymore, because they are *discontinued*.

So… What are we supposed to do??? It is a bit dilemma to us at this point. We need this personal server done as yesterday for our TV app testing.

Please advice what to do at this point.

Our office software use Server 2008 R2.  When trying to do a flat file back up of the SQL data, the "Task" bar doesn't show when right clicking the "data" as directed.  So I cannot get to the back up option to allow me to create a back up.  What am I doing wrong or any other way to get the back up option?

Thanks for the help.

We had a company deploy our server with a 32bit architecture.  We are needing to backup everything on it and re-install the OS to 64bit to increase memory capacity.  Are there white papers to achieve this?  Would a system state backup do the trick?

Thanks in advance.
