Windows Server Backup to remote share fails with error "The device is not ready"

0
0

Hi,

I have a client who uses Windows Server Backup on a Server 2008 R2 installation. I have set up their backup to remote share on another server. Both servers seem to be fine but when the backup starts I get the error "The device is not ready".

Going through the event logs I found errors during the time of the backup:

Event ID 129. Source vhdmp - description for event id 129 cannot be found. The following information was included with the event: \Device\RaidPort1

Event ID 57. Source Ntfrs - The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.

Event ID 15. Source Disk - The device \Device\HardDisk1\DR4, is not ready for access yet.

(the above HardDisk1 doesn't exist. the server only has a single hard drive in it so I am not sure what this error is referring to)

Event ID 3. Source FilterManager - Filter Manager failed to attach to volume '\Device\HarddiskVolume6'.  This volume will be unavailable for filtering until a reboot.  The final status was 0xc03a001c.

Going through the Windows Backup event log I see the error below:

The backup operation that started at '‎2013‎-‎08‎-‎04T10:00:06.701517900Z' has failed with following error code '2155348041'

I had a search around and found the log files in C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup. In the log files I see the error:

Error in backup of C:\tempsys\audit\WD123.zip.0183 during write: Error [0x800700a1] The specified path is invalid.

This error occurs multiple times and refers to many different files and folders.

I have noticed that if I stop the backup schedule and delete the backup files then recreate the backup job the backup will run successfully for a night and then fail on subsequent backups. Because of this it doesn't seem like it is a hardware issue or else it would fail even after recreating the backup job.

I have searched the forums and found nothing that relates to my issue. the server is not a Hyper-V host or VM. Neither Backup Exec or AV are installed on the server. I have gone through the files/folders randomly and checked that the backup user has permissions on the files - they have all checked out fine. I am not backing up the System drive, just a folder on the C drive.

I am really at a loss to explain what is causing this and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Recover the operating system

Hello,

I currently use Windows Server Backup to create a full server backup. I was wondering if it is possible to recover only the operating system if a windows update fails?
This server is also a domain controller. Can it cause any problems in Active Directory, DNS, ...?

windows backup restore after new install

Can I use windows backup (windows 2012) to backup the C:\ with OS and SQL then reformat C:\ and restore from the backup?

I have a Server with the OS drive on RAID 0 (SQL server also installed).

I need to replace one of the disks.

Because this is a PROD server I also need a backup of the disk incase something goes wrong (other wise it's going to take 8 hours to rebuild the server from scratch).

So with windows backup. Can i restore the OS (with all the installed applications) onto a new drive?

or is the backup bound to a specific instance of 2012?

I would like to take a backup of my computer. Mostly pictures and some critical files for school as well as the operating system, just in case my hard drive fails. What's the best way to back up the files/system? Using a External Hard drive? Thumbdrive (how big)? or plain old disk?

DPM VSS errors, eventID 12344 and 8229

Hi guys, I'm working on the usual DPM errors this week (replica is inconsistent). I got one server, which is a hyper-v server, which hosts about 20 VM's. In DPM I get this error:

The replica of Microsoft Hyper-V \Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot\vm child on vm host.domain.local is inconsistent with the protected data source. All protection activities for data source will fail until the replica is synchronized with consistency check. You can recover data from existing recovery points, but new recovery points cannot be created until the replica is consistent.

For SharePoint farm, recovery points will continue getting created with the databases that are consistent. To backup inconsistent databases, run a consistency check on the farm. (ID 3106)

On the child VM, which is running 2008r2, I get these errors:

Also, on the child VM, when I list the vss writers, the Registry Writer is often in a failed state. I checked the integration services version on the child VM which is up to date, restarted the child VM, but it did not solve the problem. I cannot get any useful results regarding these two EventID's, can anyone point me to the right direction to solve this?

Backup Error

Total newb beginner here, not sure if this is the right forum.  We are running Windows Server Standard 2012 on a virtual machine using Windows Server Backup for a full system backup each day.  Someone was testing how a particular file was backed up and ran a Backup Once and accidentally picked the System Reserved volume as the destination.  Now the regular scheduled backup fails because the System Reserved volume does not have enough space for the shadow copy.  How can I get to that volume to free up the space or remove whatever Backup put there?

Server 2008 backup issue

Need some help with a server 2008 backup issue

we are using 5 usb drives, one per day and this worked fine until a few weeks ago then one of the disk is not being recognised.

I've re-added the usb drive using wbadmin which formatted and named this as [SRV-01 2013_08_21 16:22 DISK_06] but it's not showing in the Windows Server Backup console under destination usage.

Can someone help with this issue?

Phil

External hard disk not in computer, not initialised in Disk Managment, incorrect function

Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 8. I'd like to do a clean install because it's been years since I've formatted my computer and it's having some issues installing updates and seeing external drives. I'd like to back up my data prior to upgrading.

I tried 3 external drives yesterday (2 were friends' and they work on other computers) and they all showed up under disk management but not on my computer. My friends drives had healthy primary partitions. My drive shows up as Unknown and Not Initialised. When I try to initialise it, it gets an error "incorrect function". I've worked out that this means that my disk is corrupt. I'm happy to format it. I'd like to use it to back up my data for the afternoon.

I'm not terribly technical - I've been searching for solutions and have seen lots of others with similar issues on various forums. Most of the answers left me at some point with some assumed knowledge that I clearly don't have!

I copied the instructions somebody else gave to do diskpart. Here are the results:

Disk 1 is now the selected disk.

DISKPART> detail disk

Disk ID: 00000000
Type   : USB
Bus    : 0
Target : 0
LUN ID : 0
Read-only  : No
Boot Disk  : No
Pagefile Disk  : No
Hibernation File Disk  : No
Crashdump Disk  : No

There are no volumes.

Is there anything I can do to get my hard drive working again so that I can use it to back up? USB sticks are still working but I can't fit everything on to them.

Thanks,

Grace

Accessing a Backup drive

Hi,

I've been told to transfer some files from an old server back up onto a Windows 7 computer.

Is there anyway I can get these files off of the back up drive? Because the said Windows Server has been reformatted, now I'm left with a external hard drive which has files on it but can't be accessed through Windows 7.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

One time backup works, scheduled backup fails to network share -- invalid login

I have setup a scheduled backup of C:, D: to a network share on 4 Win 2008R2 servers using the GUI.   It has worked for about a year.  Recently the scheduled backup fails on two of the servers.  I have uninstalled/reinstalled the backup feature and rebooted the server.  No change.  I CAN perform a manual backup with no problem, using the same network share.  The scheduled backup fails due to unknown login on the share!  --- works manually with same login.  The share is a Buffalo TerraStation.

I even tried using the wbadmin cmd line and it fails the same way.

Can't figure this out!  Thanks for any help.  Servers are all up to date.

Need cost-effective suggestion for online backup on VHD

I'd like to procure online (non-local) storage to directly backup into a VHD file using WSB.  I'm looking for suggestions and recommendations for online file storage specifically for the purpose of backing up to a VHD.  Right now I backup to an external drive where my cost is only about $150 (one time) for a 1TB external drive, but I'd like the same solution offsite.

Any low-cost offsite storage suggestions are sincerely appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello, i have a Win2008 R2 server that wont restore from WindowsBackup, heres what i did
1. created a full backup of c,d,e include BMR and system state (everything except the backup drive itself (1tb WD USB)
2. plug drive into another spare identical server to restore to
3. start backup > recover > another computer > choose the drive i just backup up to > next > error "the backup location does not contain any backup. specify another location

and thats it, the backup completed ok and the files are all there on the disk (vhd) yet the error message remains

tried plugginto another computer and create a network share, then access it via \\ but same errors as above, backup not found, backup settings are all default

Easy Server 2012 backup solutions with tape support?

0
0

We have several smaller to midsized customers that have invested money in tape drives and tapes. They are using Symantec BackupExec on Server 2003 / 2008 and 2008 R2. Unfortunately, Symantec postponed Server 2012 support in their products  many times already. This fact costs us many business opportunities to upgrade infrastructures to Server 2012.

DPM 2012 is good for larger customers, but less suited for smaller companies (and the DPM "philosophy change" of the backup procedures, compared to older tape based backup solutions is an obstacle as well.)

So we are looking for EASY backup solutions that support tape drives and server 2012. The "perfect" product for us would be just a tape driver and an extension to the integrated Windows Server Backup that would allow to store backups on tapes, the same way that Windows Backup allows backups to network shared folders.

Does anyone knows EASY backup software that provides this functionality? I'm also very interested in feedback from peoples that have successfully used such products on Server 2012 and are satisfied with them.

Thank you all in advance for any help.

Disk space alerts - Is it possible to increase the minimum spare space before it deletes old backups

0
0

I have a drive used for backup that currently has 12% spare disk space and is generating alerts that disk space is low. I do not want to modify the criteria for the disk space alert as this is a standard configuration used for many servers.

What I would like to do is tell Windows Server Backup to always maintain a larger amount of free space on the disk. It currently has 76 backups on the drive. We don't need that many.

Is there a way to instruct Windows Server Backup to leave more free space?
