Windows Backup Issue withbackup size

Hi,

I recently run Windows Backup tool in order to do full backup ofthe server. And tool Reported that Backup size will be   50 GB. I run the tool and at the end I only end up with 20 GB of backup data. I selected everything  including system state baremetal recovery and two disks. I am wondering why only 20 GB when it says 50 GB at the beggining.

Does this tool do some kind of compression. I am not sure whether I can use this backup if it is more than half in size. At the end of backup it says it is successful so I dont understand why half in size for backup

Easy Server 2012 backup solutions with tape support?

0
0

We have several smaller to midsized customers that have invested money in tape drives and tapes. They are using Symantec BackupExec on Server 2003 / 2008 and 2008 R2. Unfortunately, Symantec postponed Server 2012 support in their products  many times already. This fact costs us many business opportunities to upgrade infrastructures to Server 2012.

DPM 2012 is good for larger customers, but less suited for smaller companies (and the DPM "philosophy change" of the backup procedures, compared to older tape based backup solutions is an obstacle as well.)

So we are looking for EASY backup solutions that support tape drives and server 2012. The "perfect" product for us would be just a tape driver and an extension to the integrated Windows Server Backup that would allow to store backups on tapes, the same way that Windows Backup allows backups to network shared folders.

Does anyone knows EASY backup software that provides this functionality? I'm also very interested in feedback from peoples that have successfully used such products on Server 2012 and are satisfied with them.

Thank you all in advance for any help.

Got a really strange problem here.

One of my users cannot login to his laptop which is running windows 7. After entering his Username and Password it freezes on the welcome text.

I have left this for 20 mins and it will not login.

- His user account works on other machines on the domain.

- His user account works on his laptop when booted into safemode with networking

- Other user names all work on his laptop in normal windows mode and safe mode.

Backup a VM on a CSV creates a high RAM consumption on the CSV owner node

0

Hi I have installed server 2012 standard in our production network as a 4 nodes cluster. Also installed Microsoft system center DPM 2012 SP1 as the backup solution.
I have been trying to take backup of our VMs on the CSVs and noticed a very strange behavior while i'm taking backup.
The CSV owner cluster node RAM is consumed rapidly and if the backup is for a large sized VM and taking a long time the RAM of the CSV owner may get 100% consumption.
This doesn't affect the backup process itself the backup is done successfully but for any reason any other process is running on this host gets affected badly.

Yesterday one of our exchange team was working on upgrading one of the servers which happens to be a VM that's running on a node with the above case, the upgrade required the VM to restart. The VM shutdown but never started because the needed RAM was consumed by the backup process. This host services was stopped and the guest VMs was moved to other servers in the cluster but the restarted machine was not started until I stopped the physical server itself.

I don't know if this is a backup problem or the server problem but we were using this server to backup 2008 R2 cluster without this problem to appear, so I guess it's a server 2012 Cluster problem.

I hope that someone can help if he faced a similar issue and if there is a hotfix for it or so, as I can't just tell everyone to stop working in the backup time, and what if there is a problem in one node during the backup time and the VMs has to be migrated to one of the nodes that is affected by this backup issue. I think its a very dangerous situation on a production environment.

System state backup error in Windows Server 2012, same error as KB980794

Hi,

looking for Support on Volume Shadow Service error with Server 2012 cluster.

The exact same error resolved by this hotfix and registry fix for Server 2008 is experienced:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980794

However this hotfix does not apply to 2012 and the full fix requires registry modification AND hotfix.

Is there a hotfix due for the same error with 2012 as our backups continue to fail with the passive cluster node.

Thanks

Hi

Can any one guide me to take incremental backup of my windows 2008 Std 64 bit , i have  taken full the full backup F drive successfully to the storage (that time i did not made changes in "  configure performance settings " to Incremental

Now i have changed the Backup type to  incremental in windows server backup "  configure performance settings " wizard, and i trigger for an incremental backup of F drive  and found  its seems to be  going to occupy same size  in storage/hdd what it was taken   for Full  backup of the F drive

My question is ..

if i  want perform incremental backup of F:\ , initially i need to make change in "  configure performance settings " to incremental and perform first  backup and later backup (incremental) to the same destination folder it will save all later backups as incremental ..? is any thing like this

I am trying to use WinDbg to analyze a .dmp file.  However, even though I have dowloaded the symbolx, I continue to get the following error:

Unable to load image \SystemRoot\system32\ntoskrnl.exe, Win32 error 0n2
*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for ntoskrnl.exe
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for ntoskrnl.exe

Any ideas?  I need to get into the .dmp file to try to determine the root cause of an unexpected server shutdown

Microsoft iscsi target is not being connect from second cluster node

Environment

Microsoft iSCSI software target version = 3.3.16567

OS = Windows 2008R2 Enterprise

Target A = two disks (2500 MB size) => Created for a Cluster

Scenario

I created a targets on single Microsoft iSCSI target. Make two disks in iSCSI Target. Target assigned to a cluster. Cluster has two nodes. Only one Cluster node is able to successfully connect to the target(via iSCSI initiator) and while one Cluster node is connected to the target, the other Cluster node is not able to connect to the iSCSI target. Below is a snap when the other Cluster node is trying to connect to the Target.

Any comment will be appreciated. Thanks. Zahid Haseeb.

2008R2 VSS VERY SLOW Issue

0
0

Windows Server 2008 R2,

-Hyper-V Roll installed, 4 Guests running.

-Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 Installed

Server is patched up to date.

Backups of this server, if System State and Shadow Copy Components are selected, will take 11hours, normally ~1.5 hours without backing up the Guests.  This is due to what I believe are the snapshots taking 2 hours on each volume.  Actual throughput on the backup jobs is normal, except for system state and shadow copy components.

VSSadmin List writers gives 'Waiting for responses.  These may be delayed if a shadow copy is being prepared.' and will return the writers list after 10-20 minutes.  All writers are working and stable.

All other VSSADMIN commands are standard response time (read: instant), VSSadmin list providers, list shadows, etc all work normally

When this issue originally occurred, there was some writers that were [5] waiting for completion.

Stopping starting services, rebooting etc do not resolve the issue.

I tried to reinitialize vss with the DLL reregistering writeups that I found. This did not resolve the issue.

Edited for clarity: In searching for resolutions to this issue: There are alot of 'vss error' or 'Vss failure' but no 'VSS takes 10-20 minutes to give vssadmin list writers with no errors and taking 2 hours to snapshot drives during backups' issues out there.

I need a place to continue looking
