I run Windows server 2008R2 for my network. I recently installed a Windows Server 2012 as a DR backup server. I own 2008 user cals. Do I need to buy 2012 user cals because of my DR server?

Thank you

Server 2012 Backup fails with Error 0x807800C5 over VPN

I have the similar Problem such as many other users with the backup programm but:

- i have a Windows 7 System as Backup-Target (No NAS !!!!)

- i cannot backup over VPN but when i do it local to the same Windows 7 machine, everything is OK

The VPN runs perfectly. I can copy big files without Problems (bandwith is 10 MBit/s). I can do the Backup per Windows Server Backup or per wbadmin - the result is the same. I will make a Bare Metal Recovery Image.

Where is the problem ? The only differences between local backup and VPN-backup is the smaller bandwith and the higher latency.

WHS 2011 - BackupDriverInstaller.exe MISSING

I have a problem - WHS 2011 cannot restore a client pc. It seems that the problem stems from theWindows Server Solution Computer Restore Driver missing from the installation image.

The file described here (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/computer-backup-error-solution-2.aspx), backupdriverinstaller.exe ismissing from the WHS 2011 installation entirely. I checked another WHS 2011 and then did a clean install in a VM using original media to be sure.

HOW DO I GET THIS DRIVER?

Someone please help - I was on the phone with support being passed around for nearly a half hour and I've got to be able to get at and use the backups WHS is making.

Why can I only do a bare metal restore from the first backup image, I have several backup images which are newer?

Why can I only do a bare metal restore from the first backup image, I have several backup images which are newer?

I have WSB doing daily full image backups to an ext hdd. I see there are 7 backup images and all show completed. However when I do a recovery, only the first image is available - which restores correctly, but its 7 days old.

Why dont all of my image backups show up in the recovery (doing recovery from windows cd on boot up)?

Windows backup fails on some files with error [0x80070070]

Hi All

I am getting a funny error with Windows backup (wbadmin.exe). The setup

Windows server 2012 DC  with 4 share drives and running deduplication.

backup destination : another share on another server

I am backing up to a share on another server which has the free edition of "Windows 2012 hyper-v server edition" installed. When I created the task it ran fine. But after I started to fiddle with Windows backup Azure I got these errors (Not saying that its related because I uninstalled the azure client and errors are still here).

Configuration:
I have a task to create a full backup of system state and the 4 shares. Since Windows backup will overwrite the previous backup I created a batch job to rename the folder:

\\ hypervrepl1\backup\WindowsImageBackup
to
\\ hypervrepl1\backup\15-11-2013

Batch job also deletes folders that are over 5 days old.

What I backup:
folder 1 resides on a dedup drive. Size of drive is 139 GB 189.639 files. Space used without dedup on files 120GB
Folder 2,3,4 resides on a dedup drive. Size of drive 60GB  138.871 files. Space used without dedup on files 50 GB
System state backup size around 13 GB

When I copy the missing folders/files to the backup directory manually I end up with a backup size 230 GB.

Backup Server:
Back share : 1.8Tb No deduplication

So why do the last 19290 files from folder 1 fail? I the log file I get:

Error in backup of F:\Customers\XX.xlsx during write: Error [0x80070070] There is not enough space on the disk.

System state backup error in Windows Server 2012, same error as KB980794

Hi,

looking for Support on Volume Shadow Service error with Server 2012 cluster.

The exact same error resolved by this hotfix and registry fix for Server 2008 is experienced:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980794

However this hotfix does not apply to 2012 and the full fix requires registry modification AND hotfix.

Is there a hotfix due for the same error with 2012 as our backups continue to fail with the passive cluster node.

Thanks

Any backup that includes system state is failing. We are using Backup Exec 2012 but during troubleshooting are now just trying to backup the system state using Windows Server Backup and consistently get this error. I also get the error running from CLI but there are no logs created. Windows SBS 2011 SP1 64 bit 24GB RAM. Currently backing up to a data partition but originally using an RD1000 (which was replaced during troubleshooting). Here is the error from the Windows Server Backup event log:

Windows Server 2012 VSS error "The system writer is missing"

Hello All,

I have a HP server that I have just installed Server 2012 standard, SQL Server 2012 and Sharepoint 2013.

When I try to take bare metal backup I get the error: "The system writer is missing", I have tried the backup as the local admin and domain admin.

The backup will only work if I decide to back up C:, once I select "Bare Metal" or "System State" the backup fails.

I have tried this solution: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734021.aspx but have not had any luck yet.

When I run the command "vssadmin list writers" I can not see "System Writer" listed.

How can I add/turn on the System Writer?

Backup hard drive full and no longer able to backup - SBS 2011

Hi

There is a backup drive configured on an SBS 2011 using windows server backup. The backup has started to fail and says there is not enough free space on the hard drive. Is there a way to clear down the number of copies that the hard drive has without having to format and remove it from the backup schedule, please note the hard drive does not have a drive letter assigned to it. I understood that the copies should be removed on their own accord when the hard drive is reaching its limit but this does not seem to be occurring.

Imaging solution for Windows 2008 servers running Citrix XenApp

Hello --

I am planning on implementing a disaster recovery solution for several Windows 2008R2 servers that run the Citrix XenApp application. Part of the solution is to create snapshots or bootable images of the servers at a given time in the event of a catastrophic failure. This would be in addition to regularly scheduled backups which would include the system state data.

Can someone recommend a solution that would enable my being able to create bootable images that can be saved to a network share, and if needed, burned onto DVD media to allow for a recovery of the server to a given point in time?

Thanks.

Copy Server 2012 Essentials R2 Backup Folder

I currently have our server backup on a daily basis to an external USB hard drive. I have made the disk visible in Windows Explorer by using disk management and assigning it a drive letter. I am trying to copy the folder on the USB hard drive that contains all of the backups to another external drive that gets brought off site every night, but I get the error "cannot read from source file or disk". I have checked the disk and there is nothing that I can find that would prevent copying (bad sectors, disk errors, etc...), this leads me to believe there must be a service accessing these files even when there is no backup in progress.

Does anyone know what services I need to pause or what I should do to make these files copy over completely?

Thank you!

Hey everyone,

We have a Windows server 2003 box that recently cannot be backed up by backup exec 2010...I isolated the issue but cannot seem to figure out how to get shadow copies to diaplay correctly in the C drive properties (Shadow Copies tab)...is there anyway to rebuild the shadow copies without reinstalling the OS? this server is in a production environment and cannot be rebooted right away...I noticed that the service "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" was stopped so I started it and set it to 'Automatic' and just for the record "Volume Shadow Copy" service is started and set to automatic...any info on this would be greatly appreciated...please see screenshot below for the error I am getting....Thanks a million everyone!

Does ntbackup support VSS or Bare Metal Recovery

Hi All,

As we know, the Windows Server Backup supports VSS and Bare Metal Recovery. However, in our organization there are still a few very old servers with Windows Server 2003 OS which has only ntbackup.

  • Can I backup the system volume online without shutting down the server and then going to DOS/PE and running GHOST?
  • Can I restore the system volume even if the OS has been crashed (e.g. Blue screen after applying some patches).

Thanks,
