Can Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 be used for ftp?

0
0
I am trying to buy a rack storage for network backup and the units I've seen come with Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 or Windows Storage Server 2012.  I have 2 questions.  Can I use the rack storage to set up ftp sites and can I connect a monitor and keyboard to set up the ftp or do I have to access it via the network? Also, is there a difference between Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows STORAGE Server 2008 R2?

Windows Server 2012 - Windows Server Backup (WSB) Antivirus Exclusions for Symantec (SYMEFA.DB) (Again)

This is a problem which appears to have resurfaced after reportedly being fixed in Symantec. The Symantec support person asked that I post a question in Technet to see if we can get a quicker answer:

I've installed Windows Server 2012 Standard on the host, and am backing up a W2K12 Virtual Machine. I have deleted the previous scheduled backup and then recreated a new backup with just one virtual machine. If I delete the W:\WindowsImageBackup sub-folder (I renamed the "live" sub-folder temporarily) the VM is backed up OK the first time. If I try to back up a second time, I get the pruning error.

I have added the following exclusions:

The DPM Services were disabled and stopped.

AntiVirus: Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition Version 12.1.2100.2093
(12.1-RU2-MP1) This version was supposed to have a fix for all this.
Symantec re-installed this with me with only the "Virus and Spyware Protection" components included and double checked the exclusions list.
Disabling Symantec is not enough - it has to be uninstalled in order for the backup to work again.

The test virtual machine was stopped at the time of the backup and has one fixed size VHDx.

The Symantec Support person was hoping someone from Microsoft might be able to advise if there were any other exclusions that could be considered.

Strangely, this has been working fine for the past couple of weeks. It started acting up once I attempted backing up a VM with BitLocker encrypted VHDx's. (Not this test VM). Don't know if this was just a coincidence or if there is any connection. I have also been using Virtual Floppies, Differencing Disks, and Snapshots on other VMs.

When watching Resource Monitor, during the backup, it looks like ALL the virtual machine VHDs are opened and at least partially read, even though they are not running and not included in the backup.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks,
Bob.

Backup completed with warnings every other night.

The system is a Dell R720 running Microsoft Server 2012 with Hyper-V.  The backup is configured to run every night at 2:30AM and backup the System state, 2 VMs and Host Component.  Every other night the backups complete with a warning.

Time            Message          Description
11/12/2013  2:30 AM       Backup        Successful

11/10/2013  2:30 AM       Backup        Successful
11/9/2013    2:30 AM       Backup        Completed with warnings

When I check the details for the Completed with warnings, the System State Backup did not complete.  When viewing the list of all backed up files it stops at the same point for the System State Backup.  The error message is:
System state           The operation ended before completion.  Detailed  error: The process cannot access the file because
it is being used by another process.

The event log has the following Warning messages:

Backups failing, Unable to create a VSS snapshot

Hi, hoping someone can help me out.

I have a Standard 2008 Server, that is running Virtual Server 2005. There are two virtual machines and we are using Backup Assist for backup purposes.

Backups are failing and event viewer gives me these errors:

Event 521 - Backup started at '29/11/2013 11:30:42 AM' failed as Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes with following error code '2155348129'.

Event 5634 - Backup job Full Backup WHVVM failed with errors. Critical error: Unable to create VSS snapshot

There are no other VSS errors that I can find in event viewer, sharepoint isn't installed either.

I noticed on Virtual Server 2005 Virtual Server Administration website it was spitting out:

11/29/2013 10:35:04 PM Vss Writer The VSS writer for Virtual Server failed during the PrepareBackup phase, since the backup of virtual machine WHVSRV failed. Retry the operation.

WHVSRV is one of the Virtual Machines. WHVSRV event viewer has a lot of VSS and SQLVDI errors.

Event 6013 - Sqllib error: OLEDB Error encountered calling ICommandText::Execute. hr = 0x80040e14. SQLSTATE: 42000, Native Error: 3013
Error state: 1, Severity: 16
Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
Error message: BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

Backup Assist is doing an Online Backup of both the Virtual Machines, so I've tried disabling the whvsrv backup to try to determine if that is where the fault lies. I should know more by tomorrow. Does anyone have any information on the Event 6013 on WHVSRV, are there any particular log files I should check?

Thanks,

Hello,

I have successfully performed 21 system backups on my windows 2008 server using the system backup utility.

My system is down and I want to restore from one on the backups.  I boot to the installation DVD and choose the recovery tool which does not find my backup device.  What do I do?  Is there a tool I can download to do system restores?

Windows Server 2012 VSS error "The system writer is missing"

Hello All,

I have a HP server that I have just installed Server 2012 standard, SQL Server 2012 and Sharepoint 2013.

When I try to take bare metal backup I get the error: "The system writer is missing", I have tried the backup as the local admin and domain admin.

The backup will only work if I decide to back up C:, once I select "Bare Metal" or "System State" the backup fails.

I have tried this solution: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734021.aspx but have not had any luck yet.

When I run the command "vssadmin list writers" I can not see "System Writer" listed.

How can I add/turn on the System Writer?

System state backup error in Windows Server 2012, same error as KB980794

Hi,

looking for Support on Volume Shadow Service error with Server 2012 cluster.

The exact same error resolved by this hotfix and registry fix for Server 2008 is experienced:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980794

However this hotfix does not apply to 2012 and the full fix requires registry modification AND hotfix.

Is there a hotfix due for the same error with 2012 as our backups continue to fail with the passive cluster node.

Thanks

Any backup that includes system state is failing. We are using Backup Exec 2012 but during troubleshooting are now just trying to backup the system state using Windows Server Backup and consistently get this error. I also get the error running from CLI but there are no logs created. Windows SBS 2011 SP1 64 bit 24GB RAM. Currently backing up to a data partition but originally using an RD1000 (which was replaced during troubleshooting). Here is the error from the Windows Server Backup event log:

I have tried changing the backup time to a later time and deleted the backup schedule and re-entered it.

I have been searching the forums but nothing seems to be related to my situation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as the server is already in production.

Thanks,

Paul

Scheduling backups correctly

Hi

I have server 2012 standard as a PDC and exchange 2013 server.

I have been battling to set up a predictable backup schedule.

What I want to do is run a full backup on Sundays and incremental backups on all other days.

I would also like to purge old backups after either a week or two, depending on disk space available.

The new server backup seems to over simplify everything, hiding what I thought was the most basic of abilities.

All I managed to do through the user interface was schedule a daily backup which appears to have done a full backup and then a few incrementals. I have no idea when its going to do the next full backup or how long its going to retain the data.

Any advice on how to fine tune this app would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jason

One of the scenarios shows Hyper-V Replica replicating to a service provider. Can it work with Windows Azure VMs?

What is DNS? How do I test it?

Well I have not configured DNS on Windows Operating Systems for a while, and, today I thought I would look up a tutorial and start practising.  However, I am not sure how to create a DNS which I can 'lookup' through the internal network.  My computers are connected to a router which obviously has a public IP on the Internet and probably some internal IP assigned through the operating system, however I am not sure how to read it.

Through the DNS manager I created a primary DNS named theden.net.

C:\Users\Administrator>nslookup
Default Server:  ns.melitacable.com

It would seem that the nameserver it uses belongs to the ISP, can I switch to using an internal nameserver for training or doesn't this idea make sense?

Robocopy and reset archive attribute...incremental backup

For several days I try to find cmd solution to make incremental backup. Want to force robocopy/xcopy to reset archive attribute on source files when doing mirroring but with no success. I want to make each day mirror and each hour incremental backup in separate folders which work ok.

I want to daily create mirror c:\source folder tod:\backup\source folder. But need option to reset archive attribute "on the fly". /mir switch wont to this and /m switch do this but cant use this for mirroring purpose because I dont want to copy all unchanged files all over again. attrib -a c:\source\*.* /s is not solution because I have allot files.

Maybe is solution to use last modified timestamp instead archive attribute but how to do this?

Windows Server 2008 R2 Backup failing with error - 0x8004231F

Hi,

I have Windows Server 2008 R2 Web Edition. Everything was working fine until recently. I tried checking for the log files, but I see that there are no log files that are created now in the location C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup. The only files that are being created recently are of the type mentioned below.

Wbadmin.1.etl
WbadminUI.0.etl
etc.

I tried removing the old backup and starting a new backup. But, even now it is failing with the same error.

When running the backup from the PowerShell, the output is as below.

PS C:\Users\administrator> Wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\localhost\E$\WindowsImageBackup\Server01 -systemState -vss
Copy

I am out of any hints on how I can proceed now. Has any one had similar issues? Can any one give any hint on this? Thanks.

Thanks.

Windows Server Backup Shadow Copy

Hi. I was reading the following article and I came accross the folowing line "shadow copies can degrade the performance of write operations for the volume they are on." I wanted to know where the shadow copies for windows backup are located and how they can slow down your disk write performance.
