Windows 2008 R2 backup fails with event 521 error code 2155348001

0

Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.  Hyper-V role installed. OS on drive C.  All VMs stored on Drive D.

I am attempting to run a Bare Metal backup of the host system to a network share. Drive D is not included in the backup job.  I am getting the following error:

Log Name:      Application

Event ID:      521

Description:
The backup operation that started at '‎2014‎-‎01‎-‎11T04:08:50.683000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348001'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Reviewing event details, as suggested, does not offer any solution.

I have tried the suggested solutions in other similar threads of increasing the timeout value with the registry entry. This does not work.

I have not tried reregistering the VSS writers manually, as the only links I have found are for server 2003/2008 (not R2) and explicitly state that they won’t work on higher versions of the OS, since they now utilize manifests and the manual procedure could cause problems for those servers. Haven't found similar procedures for 2008 R2.

I have been able to narrow this down a bit.

A Windows 2008 R2 SP1 server with Hyper-V installed – backup to a network share is successful;

Install the DPM 2012 agent – same backup fails with the 2155348001 error.

We use DPM 2012 to backup VMs, but DPM cannot perform a bare metal backup/restore of server and the 2012 version no longer has the DPMSRT feature. I prefer to run Bare Metal Backup to a file server share.

Stuck on this one.

Event error 13 vmicvss Windows Server 2012 unable to perform online backup because scoped snapshots enabled

First W2K12 install, so, learning. W2K12 running in guest W2K8R2 Hyper-V. See error below. Been occuring since install, several events recorded within same 15 minute period each day, before and after joined to domain. Bing/Google searches and Event ID turned up no info. Quesrions:

  1. Why are online backups not enabled by default? (what if this were an Exchange or AD machine, for example)
  2. Where can I read up on scoped snapshots (again, searching yielded no info)
  3. In what scenarios should I leave scoped snapshots disabled? In what scenarios should I enable?

incidentally, this particular vm will be for SQL 2012 Enterprise. Followed immediately by a SharePoint 2013 vm also running W2K12.

Multiple server drives for client backups on Windows Server 2008 R2 Storage Essentials

0

I've just built a Windows Server 2008 R2 Storage Essentials server.  The primary use of this server is to handle backing up a few client machines here in the office.  The server has two 2TB drives, which are configured as follows:

Drive 1 has two partitions:  a 60GB system partition (C:) and a 1.75TB partition for server folders (D:)

Drive 2 has a single 1.8GB partition (F:)

Currently, I have the server configured so that client computer backups are stored in: F:\ServerFolders\Client Computer Backups.   However, I would like to have the server also use the D: drive for client backups as well.  To be clear, I want server to use BOTH the D: and F: drives for client back up space.  I haven't found a way to configure the server to do this.  Is there a way?

Thanks.

hi all,

I am trying to do a restore from an external drive and it gets to the very end I get the RPC error.  why would rpc even be involved since this is not a network based backup?  I don't know what to do to recover my system?  I have tried both using the disc to boot and from partially installing and hitting the f8 at boot to restore.  thanks for help with this!

Windows Server 2012 Essentials - server backup very slow (client is quick)

The server backup is taking 12 hours for <1Tb data!

Running Essentials 2012 R2 on HP NL40 MicroServer with 8Gb RAM. The OS is on a separate drive to a storage space where the data is held. Most of the data is static and so I can't figure out why a full server backup takes 12 hours?

On WHS v.1 it took about 1 hour. I am guessing it is doing a full backup rather than incremental but I can't see how to change this.

D: is a simple partition with no RAID or redundancy.

E: is the storage space with all imprtant data which is about 750Gb

It's backing up to an external USB 2.0 drive, but previously (WHS v.1) this was very quick so it's not the backup device

Issue with VSS and IIS

Hello,

At work i was handed a task for investigation and truly speaking, i dont know where to start with.

Here is the description of the issue. You help is greatly appreciated.

we have encountered three incidents in one month of the same type.
Following Filesystem backup, after the Configuration backup (using DataProtector) of IIS settings, the VSS is not correctly released, thus impacting the following backups, resulting in dismounted databases on Exchange.

Each time we had to reboot both the passive and active node in order to get back to nominal situation.

I join a screenshot of the log, could you please investigate as soon as possible as it is going to cause severity 1 incidents each time this will happen.

adding a server to DPM 2012

Hello.

I am currently using DPM 2010 and evaluating DPM 2012. In the 2012 setup (on a dedicated virtual server 2012 instance) I have figured out most of the setup, but I cannot add a protection group.

I have created a 100GB drive on the server and initialized it as a dynamic disk with a simple volume. At the point where I added the disk to the storage pool, it showed up as 99.98GB free space. As soon as it was added, it displayed in DPM as a 100GB drive with 104GB allocated. If I try to add a protection group it will tell me that there is not enough space in the storage pool. The drive that I am trying to add is 20GB.

What do I need to do? Is there some minimum size that a disk needs to be to be in the storage pool?

Windows backup Server hanging issue server 2012 r2

Hello I'm running Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V role installed. I'm in a small business environment so windows Server Backup seems like an ideal solution.

After installing the role on the host machine when I click on Backup Schedule it just hangs upon clicking the Backup Schedule link (please wait) I waited for a long time, then uninstalled / reinstalled / restarted the server.  I was able to schedule a backup that failed instantly with error backup failed to complete. the version does not support this version of the file format

After that I tried to modify my local backup schedule, and it started hanging again... I've searched for hours and hours on the forums and TechNet and can't seem to find anything remotely close to my exact problem.  It's a fairly fresh install too.

also the file format error referred back to the system reserved volume, not the .vhdx like some of the other posts seemed to suggest.

Windows server backup just keeps one copy (windows server 2012 standard)

Hi,
I have a Windows server 2012 where I configured Windows server backup. The following items are to be backed up (full server backup):

  • system state
  • C: (60GB with about 30GB data)
  • D: (3TB with about 1,5GB dedplucated data)
  • system-reserved (about 300MB)

The backup target is an iscsi target with 3TB.
The backup jobs runs fine and uses about 1,4TB on the iscsi target.
But only one version/copy (checked with `wbadmin get versions`) is kept.
Does anyone have an idea why it only keeps one copy? I already tried to recreate the schedule, remove the backup and start from scratch, but I always end up with just one copy.

Cheers,
Nicki

Backup works for a couple days after reboot but then stops working

I have a Windows Server 2012 machine that keeps failing with Windows Server Backup. If I reboot the server, the backup will work fine for a day or tow, but then it will start failing again until I reboot the server again.

The error in the backup manager says "The shadow copy provider had an error."

The event log error is as follows:

Source: VSS

Event ID:12289

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error CreateFileW(\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy160,0xc0000000,0x00000003,...).  hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.
.

Operation:
   Removing auto-release shadow copies
   Loading provider

Context:
   Volume Name: \\?\Volume{4bb90a74-0f22-11e3-93f3-00155d59e900}\
   Execution Context: System Provider

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

External USB disk unusable after Windows Server Backup

Hi all,
I have connected a usb external drive as a backup to disk solution using Windows Backup feature on Windows Server 2008 R2 in a test environment to see if what the limitations are. After all my tests I've removed the test server and now I find that whenever I connect the usb drive it will not be read.
I have tried deleting the volume, formatting the partition, nothing helps. After a lot of tests it got to a point where it would either show as RAW partition or simply as not initialized. I've worked with diskpart and with the GUI tools to try and make something of it but nothing worked.
Most of the times I would get errors that the file specified does not exist and in event viewer I find the following errors:

Event ID 140: The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: \\?\Volume{93c8cbc2-42fb-11e3-be75-5cac4cfd0b06}, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume5.

(A device which does not exist was specified.)

Oddly enough Volume 5 is on the internal Hard disk of the machine I'm using right now, not on the USB disk.

Eent ID 153: The IO operation at logical block address 5f186f for Disk 1 was retried.

After many different attempts I managed to get it to see the volume as it was named by the backup service again but I can't browse the files, nor can I reformat.
Any ideas?

I am getting an error that says "Windows cannot install required files.  The file does not exist.  Make sure all files required for installation are available then restart the installation.  Error code: 0X80070002".  This occurs during a clean install of Windows 7 Pro on an SSD.  There are two hard drives in the machine but I currently have them disconnected.

Anyone know what this error is or what file it is referring to?

Routine Back Up does not recognize disc in drive E.

I have been unable to run a routine back up for months.  The back up comand requests a new disk named "    " and inserted.  After closing the bay with the new disk and checking OK, the system reports NO disc.  I have wasted hours trying to solve this problem.

Please help!

How to merge two adjacent partitions?

unistall aganet for DPM 2012 without messing up DPM 2010

0

Hello.

We currently have a production environment running DPM 2010 on Server 2008. It is backing up our Intranet server among other things. I set up a Server 2012 box with DPM 2012 for testing. When I tried to add the Intranet server, I realized that I could not install an agent, but needed to 'attach' the existing one. When I tried that, I got an error message because the server is currently protected by another DPM server. The Intranet server is now listed on the DPM 2012 Management tab under Unprotected computers, status is disabled.

I want to remove the entry, but the only option that I see says 'Uninstall'.

Will that remove the agent from the Intranet server, thereby removing the ability of DPM 2010 to continue backing up this server? If that happens, will reinstalling the agent from DPM 2010 keep the associated backups, or will the new agent installation have a different ID and therefore new backup sets? currently DPM 2010 is backing up the server correctly, so I don't want to make any changes that would change that.
