How to restore bitlocker drive if there is motherboard failure?

$

Hi all,

I have a few questions regarding restoration of bitlocker encrypted windows server 2008 r2 if the motherboard fails.

Firstly, can I restore an encrypted bitlocker drive as a VM inside ESXI server if one day the hard disk or motherboard fails? What backup solutions are available to achieve this? I can't seem to find backup solution for bitlocker encrypted drive.

Secondly, if the motherboard fails, can I decrypt the encrypted drive using another server's hardware if I only have the recovery PIN? What will happen during bootup if I replace the motherboard?

Thanks all for your help.

Hello.

I'm using a simple powershell script to backup my servers (win 2008 r2). The scripts runs fine and the backup is ok. The thing is, from few servers I get this from:get-wjob -previous 1

JobType:

FailureLogPath:

C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup_Error-04-03-2014_20-00-24.log

And this is cool because I can include Succes Log and Failure log to the email. And also in windows server backup console when I open the result I can click "view list of all backed up files" and it shows me what was backed up.

But on few other servers I just get this:

Kernal general system logs time problem

I am getting this error in system logs with event ID "The system time has changed to ‎2014‎-‎03‎-‎05T08:01:34.500000000Z from ‎2014‎-‎03‎-‎05T08:00:13.501816500Z."

Backup schedule will not use faster backup method

$

Hello,

I am currently using Windows Server Backup in Windows Server 2008 R2 to make a copy of our Exchange server. When I initially set the schedule it was configured to use the normal backup method, but after noticing that it was taking an exceedingly long time I went into the Performance settings and selected the Faster backup option.

The faster method works great if I use the Backup Once option, but for some reason the scheduled backups still try to run the normal, non-incremental backup. I can't find where to change this in the schedule.

**I know that the first time you run the faster backup it needs to make the full backup. It has done this(it takes about 3 days) and every time I have run it since using the Backup Once option it has worked fine(takes about 1 hour). Once again, the issue is that the schedule will not use the faster option and tries to use the normal backup every time.

Thank you

Server 2012R2 backup fails randomly with "The specified network name is no longer available"

Folks,

I have 2 .vhdx (Generation 2) domain controllers that randomly fail DPM 2012R2 Bare Metal backup with the following " The specified network name is no longer available"

VM:

* Server 2012R2, fully patched, with "windows server backup" feature installed, enough of HD space for VSS backup, Gen2 -.vhdx

* netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled

* netsh int tcp set global rss=disabled

I have also tried the following:http://goo.gl/8WTIhx

DPM2012R2:

Fully patched and currently Bare Metal backing up 2008R2 Gen1 VM DCs with absolutely no problem. DPM has more than enough storage to accommodate the backup job

I am swallowing my pride and asking for help! :)

wbadmin backup and recovery issues

My boss wanted me to schedule  weekly backup on our 2012 server so i did this:

SCHTASKS /Create /SC WEEKLY /D SAT /TN Backup /RL HIGHEST /ST 01:00 /TR "WBADMIN START BACKUP -backupTarget:D: -include:c: -quiet"

C is being backed up to d

Now I am trying to test a recovery. The backup is on a hard drive connected to a server. The windowsimagebackup folder is on the hard drive with the backup contents in it. When I try to do the recovery when booting from the installation disk I keep getting the message about not being able to find a backup. Through the command line I can see the hard drive with the backup on it. I tried the GUI and command line options. If I click on "Recovery" in the windows server backup manager it recognizes the backup. But I cant get it to work when recovering from the installation disk.

Any help would be appreciated.

How Include network folders files on Windows (2012) Server backup

Hi,

I would like to use Windows Server Backup to backup my Windows 2012 Server, all volumes (Full Server)

I would like to include in this  backup , shared network folders files that are located  on a NAS on my dominio.

In the past,  it was possible to select  network external folders files, with Windows 2003 server backup.

Now, I have't found documentation for this argument in the Windows Backup manager documentation.

I hope my request will be clear for you.

I'm sorry for my English.

Thanks,

Maria

Windows Server 2008R2 DC VHD backup wont restore new DC

$

hello, I have been tearing my hair out on this, what we currently do is

we backup the system state of our main DC and upload this to the cloud (Amazon s3) via a piece of software called Cloud berry system state / bare metal addition. the backup is of course a VHD file.

the software integrates with windows server backup and creates a backup image, it then takes that and places it on the cloud as is, without altering it from what I can see.

I want to test the process of restoring a domain controller so if we have a disaster here in house we can get up and running as quick as possible also making sure that the backups are functional.

I created a VM running 2008 R2 in Vmware workstation 10, I then copy the VHD to the new system but cant get it to recognise it via the windows server backup, whether in windows server backup - restore or via the repair your computer options on boot.

do I need to make the machine identical to the original DC that was backed up as in run DC promo and set ,domain name, FQDN, IP address as the it was on the original?

or do I need to place the VHD file in a certain area?

I have read some blogs and guides and watched a fair few youtube vids but I keep getting the same issue I cant get the server to see the backup VHD system image file.

any help would be most welcome.

Many Thanks

Bpdzenith

Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V host. Backup failing with the error code 2155348129.

Hi all,

Background of problematic server - Server 2008 R2 SP1 running as a Hyper-V host. Runs 1x guest. Backing up full server using Windows backup to a 2TB SATA harddisk. Backup used to work until an ISCSI connection is disconnected in the guest. BackupWORKS if guest is turned off

Background of guest server - Server 2008 R2 SP1. DC and Exchange 2010 installed. It's backup target used to be a NAS via ISCSI. Now it is backing up to an attached VHD file

Have tried applying the hotFix KB975354 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975354/en-us) only to be told that it isn't applicable to my system.

I can also confirm that the ISCSI connection is definitely dropped in guest. Also, I've disabled the service "Microsoft ISCSI initiator Service" in guest.

Would appreciate if anyone let me know what else to be looking out for.

Cheers,

Chriso

If I remove a 1TB external USB drive from the WSB cycle, am I able to use it as a standard removable data disk again? I remember getting a warning when I first attached it to the WSB cycle that I wouldn't be able to use it as a storage disk anymore..?

Easy Server 2012 backup solutions with tape support?

$

We have several smaller to midsized customers that have invested money in tape drives and tapes. They are using Symantec BackupExec on Server 2003 / 2008 and 2008 R2. Unfortunately, Symantec postponed Server 2012 support in their products  many times already. This fact costs us many business opportunities to upgrade infrastructures to Server 2012.

DPM 2012 is good for larger customers, but less suited for smaller companies (and the DPM "philosophy change" of the backup procedures, compared to older tape based backup solutions is an obstacle as well.)

So we are looking for EASY backup solutions that support tape drives and server 2012. The "perfect" product for us would be just a tape driver and an extension to the integrated Windows Server Backup that would allow to store backups on tapes, the same way that Windows Backup allows backups to network shared folders.

Does anyone knows EASY backup software that provides this functionality? I'm also very interested in feedback from peoples that have successfully used such products on Server 2012 and are satisfied with them.

Thank you all in advance for any help.

Drivers for Bare Metal Recovery

New Dell T320 server with WS 2012 standard (our main software VAR doesn't yet support install on R2), with LTO-5 tape drive.

Have used Symantec BE (currently BE2102) for tape backups on prior servers for past several years. Correctly configured tape backups can be used for disaster recovery, booting to the BE DR DVD.

BE doesn't support WS 2012 (+/- R2) yet, may be released in as soon as a week or two.

Need temporary total server backup each night with disaster recovery functionality.

Have a buffalo terastation quad 8 TB running WSS 2008 R2 for NAS, and a few 1 TB seagate portable USB drives for offsite copies.

Have made a successful initial BMR backup to the NAS with windows server backup, and plan manual backups to be scheduled each day to different directory on the NAS, since backups to network drives overwrite prior backups. Copies of NAS backups for offsite storage will be made to the portable drives the next morning via USB 3 port on the NAS.

My only experience with similar image restore is with my laptops, with system images stored on similar portable external HDs, renaming all but the desired backup with extensions indicating date. Both have had system images restored in both Windows 8, and now 8.1 without any driver problems, booting to the equivalent of Windows Recovery Environment (reached after a variety of options after boot) on each laptop. Haven't tried installation disc, as not from hardware error such as HD failure and replacement. Each has a variety of drivers that would presumably be needed from HP or Dell for successful operation. The USB 3 external hard disc is recognized, and image restore has been flawless on each laptop.

The server has three 1 TB SAS drives in RAID 5, configured as one virtual C: drive. Dell tech support told me that the drivers for the Dell RAID controller are intrinsic to the OS; I had asked them why no drivers were available on their driver update site. I plan a partial test early this week with reboot to the recovery environment, then see if the network storage site is available, then see if the virtual disc is recognized.

Will the BMR restore the image to the virtual drive, or won't it be recognized?

Also have a smaller BMR on a 64GB flash drive made after initial OS install and configuration, prior to software installation and production use. Don't plan to use it unless fresh OS install is needed.

Backup choices were limited to local disc or network share, so made the flash drive a share to allow use for backups.

Can the BMR on the flash drive be used the same way as the NAS backup, if plugged into a functioning system on our network and configured as a network share?

Thanks

Windows Backup After Reboot

$

Hello,
I have a problem with Windows Backup on Windows Server 2012 R2. I'm using Windows Backup for backing up my Hyper-V virtual machines and "Host Component". I'm using planned backup with dedicated external harddrive. Everything works fine, until I reboot host server. After reboot, backup stops working with error code 0x80780049. What helps is deleting and recreating planned backup job, but I can't recreate backup jobs on every Hyper-V host after every reboot. Has someone an idea what can cause this?

Thank you..

about WinServer 2008

 Hello Guys,

I have some questions about WinServer 2008 installation, I have an Acer e-machine with Win7 in it, I want to install WinServer 2008 Data Center version on vmware v.9 on this e-machine , so I wanted to know that is it possible to install it on my e-machine with following configuration:

1) 1GB RAM.

2) 2.10Ghz CPU(dual core).

3) C partition of total size 48.8GB

(5.72 free space).

Thanks

Huge shadow copy

Dear gentlemen in MS community

I'm facing a little problem doing WSB backup for a certain server .

The server has two local drives:

C:\ 280 GB, 11.3 GB available.

D:\ 400 GB, 83.75 GB available.

WSB was not working with the default VSS storage setting due to low space in C:

So I move shadowstorage for C drive to D drive without setting any limit for shadowstorage. (UNBOUNDED).

When I run the backup, the D volume becomes full and then the backup operation fails with error code 2155348041

So, how do I run this backup successfully?

IIS 7.5, MVC3, URL for Layout Page

$

We have an issue with one of our web servers where the URL for the Layout page is jumbled occasionally and so we get a Http Exception. The URL looks like /(sdfkljsdlfjrwlojflksdjfssdfdsfsdlkjsdgnmldigkh324sdlkjsdgdfsdf90sdfnsdfsdf)/_Layout.html and exception says...'could not be found'.

IIS reset normally resolves this issue (for a while...few weeks) and we always come back to this again.

Is this due to any windows update on our web servers? If so, why only one web server?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Kumar
