wbadmin: how to recover files that were modified on a particular date?

Hi guys,

We got hit with the crytolocker virus on 4/11/2014. There's about 8000 files that were infected and therefor need to restore these files using windows backup.

Is it possible to use WBADMIN to recover files that were modified on 4/10/2014 and 4/11/2014?  my goal here is to only recover the files that the virus modified and not recover 100,000 files that weren't infected.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Server Backup hangs and produces "new virtual drives"

Win Srv 2012 Essentails backup runs fine for several days, then hangs and adds "new virtual drives # 6 and #7 or similar". At the same time the server manager hangs with loading storage pool and further disk/drive - information.

Completely disconnecting / shut off and reconnecting the external USB-backup drive stops the error with an unsuccessful backup.

Windows Backup After Reboot

Hello,
I have a problem with Windows Backup on Windows Server 2012 R2. I'm using Windows Backup for backing up my Hyper-V virtual machines and "Host Component". I'm using planned backup with dedicated external harddrive. Everything works fine, until I reboot host server. After reboot, backup stops working with error code 0x80780049. What helps is deleting and recreating planned backup job, but I can't recreate backup jobs on every Hyper-V host after every reboot. Has someone an idea what can cause this?

Thank you..

Sync 2 iSCSI NAS Boxes?

$

Is it possible to sync 2 iSCSI NAS boxes under Windows 2012 R2 Essentials?  We're using one of the NAS boxes for all of our data (including Folder Redirection for user folders) and we'd like to be able to sync it with another on a regular schedule.  The 2nd box is needed for the possibility of any legal discovery so we can surrender our data without shutting down the operation.  So it's important that we're able to sync (mirror?) our data, and more importantly our user folder data to the second NAS.  Anyone have a good suggestion on this?

Windows 7 Backup Fails With 0x80070002 (hotfix ineffective)

None of the previous listed threads about this fixes my problem.

The suggested MS Hotfix states my computer is not compatible for this fix.

Not sure what else I can do.  I do have a zip of the backup log files if I can send that in.

My system is malware free and runs perfectly otherwise.

Thanks.

"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination" when trying to backup to Backup Once to Samba share on NAS

Environment:

Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials running in VirtualBox in a Windows 7 host. Networking is configured and works fine.

Background:

My only backup needs are to copy the contents of two folders to a NAS folder every day at 2 AM.

I configured a backup schedule in Windows Server Backup (wbadmin) to a network location which is hosted as a Samba share on a Synology NAS.

For authentication, I created a backup user which has the same username and password as a user on the Samba share, with permission to read and write the backup folder. I added this user to the Backup Operators group.

Problem:

When I try to run the Backup Once operation to test my backup, I get the following error message:

"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination."

What I've tried:

I verified that the location is directly accessible in Windows by copying and pasting the address from the Windows Server Backup destination into explorer. Providing the backup user credentials opened the location and creating/reading files worked fine.

Adding the backup user to the Administrators group did not have an effect.

Update 2014-02-18

I checked the backup destination and was surprised to find that the scheduled backup actually completes successfully. However, Backup Once always results in the above error message. So the problem is confined to the "Backup Once" operation.

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine being backed up using Backupassist but also utilizing VSS.  The backups destination drive is iScsi drive (qnap). Recently I discovered that my previous backups were deleted and I am getting below log. The shadow copies were deleted during backup process.

Event ID:25  Source: volsnap

The shadow copies of volume Y: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.  Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.

Hello,

Last few days our backups (Veritas NetBackup) no longer work for Exchange 2010 server on Windows 2008 R2 SP1.VSSis still in error:

Microsoft Exchange Writer State [5]Waiting for completion / Last errorRetryable error.

After complete reboot it returns tostate [1] Stable / Last errorno error

Begins to turn again Veritas NetBackup and same error occurs.

I see also that my sevrver owns 2disks (in disk manager) with the following data

volume:<blank>/ Layout Single / Type Basic /File System <Blank> / Status Healthy / Capacity 0MB

Other disks are OK and DISKPART does not show this 2 disks.

Symantec tells us that the problem comes from VSS / Microsoft.

Any idea of the problem? How to troubleshoot VSS with Exchange provider/writer?VSSseems verypoorly explained by microsoft. Many problems andveryfew solutions (reboot and see)

Thank you in advance

Windows Server 2012 ESSENTIALS File History Backups Explained

Hey everyone,

I have a question, so our server is backing up all client computers to a "file history backups" folder on the servers hardrive.

For one of the users I cannot figure out where data, in a folder, is coming from.

The file structure is as follows:

D:\File History Backups\UserName\Computer\UserName@Domain.local\Computer\Data\$OF

I'm not sure what the $OF is referring to and where the data is coming from. Its filled with data but I'm not sure from where on the client computer.

Each folder has data in it.

Can you please explain what is going on.

Dear Microsoft

I Have two server windows 2008 server (server1,server2) with dfsr, one night at 8;18 PM somehow one of the server (server2) started the replication when i scheduled the replication to start at 9PM and on the log of server2 it said that there was a conflict on one folder and all the content of that folder is moved to ConflictAndDeleted folder, the folder size is around 11GB and the quota of ConflictAndDeleted is at the default 660MB only around 400MB of data is on that folder.

At server1 there is no log of coflict but the content of the same folder is also gone, i only have a backup of around 3 month ago, i tried scan the drive with getdataback and easus but no result, is there anyway to recover those file ?

Thanks for the help

Anton

Using a 2nd NIC for high troughput storageserver connection on Windows2012R2 server

Hi,

We have a setup where we use a physical Windows 2012R2 server as a dedicated backupserver. This server is running Veeam backup and replication services and has both a Network Attached Storage repository attached and a local external tapestreamer. It will have to backup our virtual mahines from a VMWare ESX hostserver.

This backupserver server has 2 Gigabit NIC's, and the Storagaserver (NAS) has also 2 Gigabit NIC's. The network switch however still has obsolete 100mb ports and has no free ports left.

So the easiest way for my customer would be to purchase a new Gigabit switch.  This will happen in time but we are requested to look for an easier solution for the moment.

We therefore have connected the NAS to the second NIC of the backupserver thus creating a Gigibit link.

Would like some advise about the configuration now. We have some options:

- creating second separate network segment for the storage server, which will need a routing proces on the backupserver (will this not greatly affect the performance of the troughput?)

- teaming the NIC's in a way that heavy traffic to the NAS will not affect the network traffic to the LAN. I could need some advise..there is more that one way to team the NIC's, waht is the best way ?

Thank you for your advise.

Failed system state backup on Passive Node

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 cluster that has a service that is installed on shared storage.  On the passive node, the system state backups are failing because the path to the service executable does not exist.    KB980794 existed for Server 2008, which contained a hotfix and a registry key that could be added to exclude the paths to binaries that should not be included in the system state backup.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SystemWriter\ExcludedBinaryPaths

Is there a similar method of excluding these paths in Windows Server 2012 that will allow the VSS snapshot to execute successfully?
