Windows Backup

I continue to try to do a backup and receive the error that the backup did not complete successfully.  Details indicate an error occurred.  The latest backup set can not be found.  Make sure it is accessible and it has not been deleted.  Otherwise create a new full backup.  (0x8100000A)

But it will not let me create a new one - what do I need to do?

Easy Server 2012 backup solutions with tape support?

0
0

We have several smaller to midsized customers that have invested money in tape drives and tapes. They are using Symantec BackupExec on Server 2003 / 2008 and 2008 R2. Unfortunately, Symantec postponed Server 2012 support in their products  many times already. This fact costs us many business opportunities to upgrade infrastructures to Server 2012.

DPM 2012 is good for larger customers, but less suited for smaller companies (and the DPM "philosophy change" of the backup procedures, compared to older tape based backup solutions is an obstacle as well.)

So we are looking for EASY backup solutions that support tape drives and server 2012. The "perfect" product for us would be just a tape driver and an extension to the integrated Windows Server Backup that would allow to store backups on tapes, the same way that Windows Backup allows backups to network shared folders.

Does anyone knows EASY backup software that provides this functionality? I'm also very interested in feedback from peoples that have successfully used such products on Server 2012 and are satisfied with them.

Thank you all in advance for any help.

Franz

We run MS server 2011. Using the backup wizard I was initially unaware that all usb drives must be online at the time of configuration.  Once I added the second drive at a later date after several "successful" backups to Backup Disk 1, somehow; it reconfigured Backup 1 as Backup 2 volume id.  Always allowing for operator error, I proceeded to reverse the process once I had discovered the correct procedure.  However, the wizard will not let me start over.  I have taken both drives and reformatted them with the correct volume ID to no avail.  I have tried to remove all backups from the move or add display, to no avail. I have tried to unschedule the backup, and the wizard will not let me.  I am curious as to why the backup "wizard" does not query the drive to see that the correct volume is loaded and would really like to know how to undo what I have done.  I had the drives initially formatted with the correct volume names, but the system never looks at the disk.  We had better backup control in the 80s, volume labels were checked to help eliminate human error.  Hopefully, the actual backups are checked.

Please help, it makes no sense for the system to call disk[1] Backup Disk 2 and also call disk[2] Backup Disk 2.

Thanks.

Backed up files partially disappear after restore (Windows Server 2008 R2 - Windows Server Backup)

Dear all,

I am experiencing a problem with "Windows Server 2008 R2", using Windows Server Backup.

Here's my setup:

Server: RAID 5 Disk setup

Backup:

By using Windows Server Backup (within Windows Server 2008 R2), C: and D: were fully backed up, with "System State" and "Baremetal Recovery" options selected. Backup went okay without any errors.

Restore:

By using Windows Recovery Environment  (booted from Windows Server DVD), C: and D: were fully restored to the original partitions with "System Recovery" option found within Windows RE (without re-formatting partitions during restore). Restore went OK without any errors. Rebooted, and system has been running fine.

Problem:

After the restore, the system itself seems running OK; no BSOD, no crash, no visible errors.

However, our client insisted some files (around 6 to 7) which are related to the propriety software has "disappeared" right after System Recovery.

Question:

Since Windows Server Backup is using "Volume Shadow Copy" technology which enables "live backup" of the running system, is it possible that some files will disappear (=restore error) after System Recovery?

I cannot really find any errors or warnings related to Windows Server Backup in the event log, through. No Windows-backup errors. No VSS errors, too.

Do anybody have experienced this kind of problem in the past?  Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

2012R2 server System writer missing in the vssadmin list writers

Hi,

I have some problem with a brand new 2012R2 standard server.

we were able to backup the server from the beginning without problems with the built-in windows backup application.

After installing Solarwinds and SQL server on it, now we have this error in the event logs if we try to backup system state:

The operation ended before completion. Detailed error: The system writer is not found in the backup.

If I check the VSSAdmin list writers, system writer is missing.

We also have this error in the event logs :

Cryptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.

Details:

AddWin32ServiceFiles: EnumServicesStatusEx API for service enumeration failed

System Error:

The data is invalid.

.

I did not find anything on the AddWin32ServiceFiles: EnumServicesStatusEx API... and the problem for the system writer seems to start from this error.

Anyone have an idea ?

thanks

Windows Server Backup for VM with Exchange

We have Server 2012 standard and its running Hyper- V. The VM that is running is Server 2008 R2 Standard which is also our Exchange 2010 Server.

I know you can use Server backup 2012 to easily backup Hyper-V machine. But will it be so easy if that VM is running Exchange on it? I am going to back it up to an external drive.

This article shows how to backup a HV machine but I can't really find anything on a HV machine with exchange.

Hyper-V VSS Writer stuck at [5] waiting for completion

Hello

I am currently having issue with backing up Hyper-V servers on a 2008 R2 machine. Backups were working until 2 weeks ago

I have also been look at the vss writers and it seems it's been stuck in waiting for completion. i have rebooted and uninstall and reinstall WSB and still the writer is stuck at waiting for completion.

Writer name: 'Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer'
   Writer Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de}
   Writer Instance Id: {d4b387f3-2805-41ee-993d-72eacbc613bc}
   State: [5] Waiting for completion
   Last error: No error

The WSB in the event log was
The backup operation that started at '‎2011‎-‎06‎-‎16T15:59:42.847000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348001'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

I have look up the error code and it seems to be a time out issue of WSB

I am currently suspecting it is the multiple shadows copy's that are stuck. As when i type vssadmin list shadows there are multiple shadows that seem to have been generated when I tried to create the backups via WSB.

I tried deleting the shadow but it would not allow me and instead stated i have to delete them with the backup application in which i created them with.

Does anyone know how to delete the shadows from WSB? Or is there a fix for this issue??

Thanks!

My main External Hdd while writing to it got an error saying Cyclic Redundancy I tried using Chkdsk but it states that the data had turned RAW. Upon restarting my pc the disk drive H was no longer visible and the Hdd space is now unallocated space.
I want to recover all of the data if possible but most of the software i found was only one file type recovery software, I know that resigning the Volume to H will format the drive but as i dont want that i m lost . Can MiniTool Power Data Recovery help me ?

Server 2012 (Virtualized), VMWare, and DFSR events

So we have a 3 ESXi host setup with multiple virtual servers, two of which were DCs, and both had a "feature" that annoys me to no end. I am using past tense because one of these DCs has been demoted and is no longer an issue, however both were having the problem and the remaining DC still is. Server names are changed to protect the innocent.

Both were server 2012 and both were DCs. We ran, briefly, just a windows backup from V-DC 1 and while the backup was running on the one server the following warning would pop up in the DFSR events on every server linked to it.

DFSR Warning 5014
The DFS Replication service is stopping communication with partner V-DC1 for replication group Domain System Volume due to an error. The service will retry the connection periodically.

Additional Information:
Error: 9036 (Paused for backup or restore)
Connection ID: 3D45591D-3B07-4AA1-8341-5D2A445A0ECD
Replication Group ID: 0586384B-C43A-42F2-9DA3-13F4DF188FEE

Follow shortly after by:
DFSR Warning 5004
The DFS Replication service successfully established an inbound connection with partner V-DC1 for replication group Domain System Volume.

Additional Information:
Connection Address Used: DNS-DHCP.Bremertonschools.org
Connection ID: 3D45591D-3B07-4AA1-8341-5D2A445A0ECD
Replication Group ID: 0586384B-C43A-42F2-9DA3-13F4DF188FEE

This happened on EVERY backup. Shortly afterwards we went from Windows Backup to the .... interesting.... Appassure backup, and added V-DC2 to the backup schedule. We then began to receive the same warning/cleared combo on both V-DC1 and V-DC2. This now happens at 1 minute past the hour, every hour, spamming the DFSR logs with warning and generally annoying the crap out of me. V-DC1 has been demoted due to replication issues that it was having (although not likely related) but V-DC2 is still active as a DC.

From everything that I have read this is a "feature" from Windows, however it only happens on the VMware boxes (meaning the physical servers attempting to replicate to the VMWare server log the error, the VM itself does not log anything). We have something misconfigured and I have no idea what and I can find nothing on this that is pertinent.

I contacted VMWare technical support about this issue and was summarily told that this was a server OS issue and that I should contact Microsoft.

So does anyone have any idea? Is there any information that I can dump to help? I am a bit stumped.

Thanks for the help!

The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.
