My IE9 Browsing History File is Not Backed-up

$

I use Windows 7 Backup and Restore utility to back up my C drive, system files and user files. It seems that this backup utility does not back-up the folder containing IE9 browsing history: C:\Users\aashomlo\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History (This file size is 18 MB.)

Could anyone tell me why, or what to do in order to get this history folder included?

Also, apparently certain/selective links are not recorded on the History, like youtube.com. Why and what is the remedy?

Two questions: Failed backups and Bare Metal Recovery

$

Good morning technet-ers.

So I have two questions today. One about BMR and another about a failing backup.

First question: So I work for a small IT firm and we're managing a couple of servers for a client. The first of which is a virtualization host running hyper-v and the second is a file server. The first server has been failing backups due to lack of space on the i-scsi volume. This is because the backup was also backing up the VM files as well. They are currently stored on a seperate, local volume apart from the OS. All our VM's back themselves up to another NAS device. So we've tried tried to remove the volume with the VM files off of the backup schedual, but it says that the volume is required for the Bare Metal Recovery. Is there a way to move that volume off?

Second question:
With the second server we've been having constant failures to back up the server. We're doing a full back up, system state and BMR. Whenever it tries to initiate it gives an error: 2147942401 "Incorrect Function".
When inspecting the backup logs I notice that the backup stops on the recovery partition (Says preparing) but doesn't get further then that. I've tried shrinking the volume by 10mb (I've read that it may be because it can't read the last sector in the volume) but that hasn't helped. I've tried removing the recovery partition from the backup, but it's telling me it needs the recovery partition for BMR.

So any insight on this would be great!

Thanks

Easy Server 2012 backup solutions with tape support?

$

We have several smaller to midsized customers that have invested money in tape drives and tapes. They are using Symantec BackupExec on Server 2003 / 2008 and 2008 R2. Unfortunately, Symantec postponed Server 2012 support in their products  many times already. This fact costs us many business opportunities to upgrade infrastructures to Server 2012.

DPM 2012 is good for larger customers, but less suited for smaller companies (and the DPM "philosophy change" of the backup procedures, compared to older tape based backup solutions is an obstacle as well.)

So we are looking for EASY backup solutions that support tape drives and server 2012. The "perfect" product for us would be just a tape driver and an extension to the integrated Windows Server Backup that would allow to store backups on tapes, the same way that Windows Backup allows backups to network shared folders.

Does anyone knows EASY backup software that provides this functionality? I'm also very interested in feedback from peoples that have successfully used such products on Server 2012 and are satisfied with them.

Thank you all in advance for any help.

Franz

i have a windows server 2008 R2 Server which is domain controller and also have folder redirection and some group policy settings on it and all folder redirection profiles are set on the same server so all files are there and if i setup another win2008 r2 server with secondary domain controller  that can be as a backup for my active directory. just my question is if i do that then will i have the same Group policy's settings automatically on the second server and also same folder redirection on it ? (just if my main server goes bad or crashed, then ill be able to use the second domain controller as a primary). ????

Does a full backup includes system state backup?

Hello,

I have an easy question: Does the full backup with Windows Server Backup, configured by the WSB GUI as job, includes the system state backup?

I know that I have to use the command line wbadmin tool to perform an system state backup only. But I want to know if the full backup by WSB includes this by itself?

I want to backup a domain controller running Windows Server 2008 (_not_ R2) by WSB on a seperate hard drive.

Backup to external 1 TB external HD failed, then main HD failed, everything lost

$

I back up my Windows 7 religiously every 3 months using Windows Backup and keep the hard drive at another location (in case of fire at home). This time everything went wrong:

  1. The first backup attempt failed. Not enough space on hard drive, supposedly.
  2. I deleted previous backups from the 1 TB hard drive and started a new complete Windows backup.
  3. That backup also failed (after several hours) but did not give a reason. I checked the "details" but there were really no details at all.
  4. I figure a reboot might help, so I reboot my Windows 7 system (which I do every day).
  5. The mouse did not work, so I rebooted again. (This happened approx. every 5th time I rebooted that drive.)
  6. But this time the boot manager was not found. ?! Tried again multiple times - no luck. Hard drive is now completely dead. So now I have no hard drive AND NO BACKUP.
  7. Husband (IT professional) tries everything to access the hard drive. No choice but to RMA, he says. He gets me a new hard drive and installs a new Windows 7 system similar to my old one.
  8. So we connected the external hard drive just to see what's on it. Content:
    • A MyName-PC"file" from the day I tried making this last backup.
    • WindowsImageBackup folder from Jan. 2012
    • MediaID.bin from Jan. 2012
  9. So I double-click MyName-PC and get the Windows Backup dialog that asks, "Do you want to restore files from this backup?" Heck yes! I clickRestore files. But I get an error message: "The backup application could not start due to an internal error: (0xC0003005)." No further information.
  10. So I drill down into WindowsImageBackupand there are 10 XML files in there with long names, plus a huge VHD file and BackupSpecs.xml.

Please, any advice what to do? I am very concerned about this. Above all my family's photos from 15 years seem to be lost, which is unacceptable.

Questions (answer any or all, please!):

  1. Is there likely to be any way to restore (or get files off of) the hard drive that appears to be completely dead?
  2. Can I do anything with the files (described above) on the external hard drive? Even though the backup failed (according to the error message from the dying hard drive), it did run for several hours. I apparently can't get Windows Backup to restore them, but is there any other way?
  3. There were previous backups on the external hard drive. I deleted those right before starting the new backup. The hard drive properties say that 351 GB is used out of 1 TB. Is it possible that some of those photos can be restored even though they were deleted?
  4. Any other advice? What's my next step? (I have to get those pictures back one way or another...)

Would really appreciate any help. Thank you.

Windows server 2012 backup failed over Network share on NAS?

$

My server 2012 consistently failing to do a backup to a network share located on my NAS. this is my first time trying to backup a server on a NAS.

I have a ReadyNAS 312 setup with Active Directory to read permission from domain users and give the users access to it. I can manually create folders and move files across but when it comes to backing a windows server to the NAS network share it fails.

I believe it's to do with either the permission or the credential details. I have tried using both domain administrator accounts and the nas default admin account when scheduling a backup.

The error message doesn't say much, it just fails basically. I'm trying to see if i can get further details on event viewer but can't really find it.

Any help on to this matter will be much appreciated.

Thank you

Server 2012 R2 Backup to NAS fails: another process has locked portion of the file

I am trying to setup Windows Server Backups in Server 2012R2

My script didn't work, so started troubleshooting from the very bottom. My backup target is a DLink NAS drive with shared folder (full anonymous access and also tried setting up a dedicated user) Source to back up is a small folder on drive C From Server Backup manager -> Backup Once, add my folder to items to backup, point to \10.1.1.49\Volumes_1 Click backup, goes trough initial motion and the fails with error: "The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file"

Windows server backup fails with error "The system cannot find specified file"

I have been having this problem for quite some time. Done a lot of googling and trying recommended fixes and still nothing. I've recreated the backup itself, checked registry keys, ran check disk on all disks involved in the backup and re-created the VHD that the backup uses.

The server is running Windows Server (R) 2008 Enterprise (x86)

The VHD is from a datastore on our vmware host.

Backup to External HDD with Task Scheduler

$

Hi there,

I have recently configured a server to run a normal scheduled backup from one internal HDD to a second internal HDD with no problem.

I then created a secondary backup from the first internal HDD to an external USB HDD via the task scheduler which initially worked for the first two backups, creating an incremental copy of the correct files.

The third day it tried to backup at the scheduled time of 2am, it failed and has continued to fail ever since - the error reports "Failed to create directory". This external backup drive has not been modified, not been disconnected and reconnected, is used for nothing else but these simple backups.

In short, the scheduled backup is meant to copy a folder from C: drive to the E: drive (the external) at 2am each day of the week. ie C:\Folder -> E:

I have viewed all of the guides on creating scheduled backups with task scheduler and know the syntax well enough so literally have no idea why all of a sudden they have stopped. There is more than adequate space on the drive - approx 30GB being copied to a 500GB drive.

If someone would be able to give me an idea or provide me with a task schedule command to create this backup that would be excellent.

Assuming that incremental backups are the only option - is it possible to create full entire backups each time? Following on from that - once the destination drive is full am I right in assuming Windows Server 2012 would be smart enough to delete the oldest data and continue to back up?

Kind Regards,

Ewan

Here are some details:

The Windows Server Backup has been performed successfully .(including System State , Bare Metal , and C : and D :)
The Windows version is: 2008 R2 SP1.
In the Restore to a modified Cisco UCS Hardware the above error message appears. It is therefore not restored to the same hardware.
During the Windows recovery the network card drivers and the HDD drivers are added. For this, the Windows DVD is unmountend and mounted the drivers DVD .Then the network is configured using netsh.

Source server :
Hardware: Cisco UCS B440 M2

We are unable to open in the DOS box the event logs to evaluate detailiere logs.
Diskpart shows the disk ( 370GB ) as Disk 1 .
The New Disk is larger than the old one.
