Windows 2012 and VSS problem

$
0
0

Using Baracuda backup software on server 2012 and everything was working well until recently. The snaphot before backup seemed to be working 100% , the stopped and was only backing up 10 % of the total backup. Errors in the logs indicate error 22, 8193 and some others. Re-registered all the DLL files, did not make a difference.  Ran VSS admin list providers. VSS list volumes and vss list writers unexpected error.

Ran a scan disk on all the volumes, no errors. Checked the registry and see (2) providers, one can be deleted and re-created and the other will not delete. Tried to run sfc /scannow and got a protective error (would not run) Looked all over the place for answers outside of uninstalling the backup software. Not sure what to do.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

VSS list writers & Server 2008 R2 backup

Hello Experts, having issues backing up a Windows 2008 R2 server.

The backup operation that started at '‎2014‎-‎07‎-‎20T01:43:21.726000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348249'.

I am able to manually create a ShadowCopy on the SystemReserved and C partitions, but I think the issue is in the vss writers.

Here is a paste of vssadmin list writers:

Backup status reported incorrectly

Using Windows SBS 2008, following recreating a partition (D:) which had reverted to RAW from NTFS, I needed to restore the last good backup, which appeared from the SBS Console/Server Backup Properties/Previous Backups to have successfully backed up drives C: and D:.  When moving to restore, I find that this backup was completed with warnings.  Expanding this line, it reports an error: "D: Incorrect function".  When I look back through the history of the connected backup drive, I find that it has only backed up the C: drive even though the backup configuration has always been set to back up both C: and D:.  As D: drive is the drive which holds all of the data, everything appears to be lost!  Is there any way to recover any of this data?

Hello,

I have Windows server 2012 R2 Hyper-V. There are
installed four virtual servers (2012 R2).

I backup parent server via Windows backup. I was able to recover whole
server including virtual machines.

I have also setup backup task to backup virtual servers separately.

When I test recovering virtual server on other hyper-V machine, it is ending
with error:<o:p></o:p>

The system image restore failed. Error details:
Incorrect function (0x80070001)<o:p></o:p>

I create new virtual machine, run installation Windows
server 2012 setup , than I choose repair computer. Error occurs when restore
process shows restoring EFI partition.

i had the following message " You do not have the required permission to complete this task" and you need authorisation from  SERVER\user

i went to the source serve and tried to change the owner of the file but i cant add the target Administrator to be able to move the file. cause workgroup vs domain

The restor pocess did not succeed because your computer cannot connect to the server - Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Experience

Hi all

I've been running Windows Server 2012 R2 with the Essentials Experience in test for a Windows 8.1 client environment, on an HP ProLiant MicroServer N54L. Overall I've found the Essential Experience set-up over WHS2011 and WHSv1 okay; still looking to extract any real value over the former versions.

This box has been up and running for a few months now, with client backups of a Win 8.1 box scheduled and running successfully every day. However when trying to conduct any file restores from the backups, to the client, I receive an error dialog once I go through motions from the Dashboard:

  1. On the 'Devices' tab, right-click the appropriate client and select 'Restore files or folders for the computer'
  2. 'Restore Files of Folders' dialog pops up, asking me to 'Choose a backup' from the list of all the backups that have run
  3. Select any one in the list - have tried numerous backups; automatic, manual, etc. same result every time
  4. Brings up the dialog to 'Choose a volume', choose either C: or D: partitions of the same fixed drive - again, no difference which one I choose, the outcome is the same
  5. 'Opening the volume' dialog starts, with progress bar, runs to about 4% complete the pops up the dialog 'The restore process did not succeed'. Full error in the dialog, "The restore process did not succeed because your computer cannot connect to the server. Make sure that the computer is connected to the networkm and then try again

If my computer cannot connect to the server - how can I get that far? How can I open the dashboard, select a client, select from a list of backups, select a volume to restore, etc. What is going on here?

How system image / buremetal backup is working ?

Hello all,

I would like to know how system image is working , i mean by that , while its creating the image how it will be written to the external hard disk drive, what files were written by the OS in to EXTHDD to make it bootable , is that file are hidding can they be copied?

Now why i am asking that !!

I passed through this situation: I created a buremetal backup and the dest. location was to network shared folder, so when its created, i copied that file and past it to the external HDD then i restart the computer and i choose to boot from USB Dev. , but once i click that option it give me this error msg. BOOTMGR is missing.

So is that mean that when i copied the image file , that boot up files where not copied, or what happened exactly?

Another question, Can i boot my machine from network shared folder that contain the backup and how ?

Looking forward for your help.

Regards,

Lubna

Delete systemstate backups and non-system state backups

Hi,

Basically we have a SBS 2011 Standard machine that uses the Windows Server Backup utility to backup the following items:

System Reserved, Local Disk (C:), and DATA (D:)

But the backup destination is full and now the backups have failed for the last 3-4 nights. So how do i get rid of the oldest backups and keep the last 2 or 3? AND how do I set the backups so that everytime a backup is run the oldest backup gets deleted (or replaced with the new backup) automatically?

The local disk (C:) is 131GB, the DATA (D:) is 300GB and the System Reserved is 100MB

The backup destination is 465GB.

I have tried wbadmin commands but i keep getting errors such as:

ERROR: Snapshots were found but they were outside of your allowed context. Try removing them with the backup application which created them.

ERROR - The specified backup location could not be found or is not a supported backup storage location.

I WISH microsoft would just put the backups into a folder where there easily located and deleted!

I'm new to IT so be nice ha!

Stop backup from renaming Backup folder each night

Is there a way to have Windows Server Backup write to a folder without
appending the date to it each night? I would like it to save to the
WindowsImageBackup\<Computer Name>\Backup instead of
WindowsImageBackup\<Computer Name>\Backup yyyy-mm-dd. The reason
for this is we are trying to use DFS to keep a copy of the backup
locally and to our DR site, but when the folder name changes each night
DFS thinks it needs to replicate this new folder instead of just the
changes between the two backups.

Thanks

I am running Windows Server 2012 Datacenter and set up a local backup to an external hard drive. The Local Backup MMC shows that my backups are successful, but the Logs folder on the backup disk shows error files for each backup I have run. When I open these files, they are empty. How do I find out what the error is, and if there is no error, why are the files appearing?

can't exclude Data drive in back up image

Hi, I'm trying to back up my system to external Hard drive, but I can't exclude my data drive from back up option. it says it's required for system recovery. in my previous back up I can exclude the data drive but now I can't. the D Drive is just purely for data and is huge.

if I uncheck the "enable system recovery" option then I can exclude the data drive. but this is system back up. I need it to be available for system recovery

please help.

thanks.

Windows Server Backup Fails - "The system cannot find the file specified" after deleting orphaned VirtualMachine files

Hey!

I have a problem with Server 2008 SP2.

A couple of days ago i deleted old orphaned Virtual Machine folders. Before i was able to do that, i had to release those, by deleting symliks? from "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Hyper-V\Virtual Machines".

After that, i am having a error with Windows Server backup: "The system cannot find the file specified"

Also, if i want to restore, then the "Applications" choice is gryed out, so i cant restore i virtual machine and even Fullbackup shows of transferred data 53GB of 100GB, but it isnt backing up the volume, where other virtual machines are!

What should i do?

I tried stopping backup and scheduling it again - it didnt help.

I found out, that i have a RecycleBin folder on the VM drive - should i erase that?

I also tried looking the GUID of orpahend VM from registry and found entrys - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\DeviceClasses\{881aa40e-xxxx}##?#Root#VID#0000#{881aa40e-xxxx}

The same entrys are in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002 and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet

Hi,

i've setup Windows server Backup on a Windows server 2012 standard (which is a Domain Controler) to do a complete backup on a external hard drive.

During the backup, all go well until system state backup. It fail with the following error in the event log (event id 517) : 0x80070001 (invalid function)

after some research, i found that log :

System State Backup return error 0x8078001d.

I've google a lot about these errors but nothing concerning Windows Server 2012.

VSS Writers does not show any errors (using vssadmi nlist writers)

No disk error anywhere in the event viewer.

I've also check the "JUNCTION" issue (mostly known in Win 7 and Win server 2008 r2) but none of them are "mounted drive" so ...

I'm really runing out of idea ...

EDIT :

No updates are applyed to the machine.

will try with updates ...

EDIT :

even with the last Windows updates, i keep get the same error

The Block Level Backup Engine Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 1 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 120000 milliseconds: Restart the service.

I have tired restarting the Block Level Backup Engine Service service, deleting the backup catalogue, removing and re adding Window Server Backup feature. None of these fixed the problem

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My company is still running on server 2003 and we wont be updating until late this year. In the meantime I need a good but cheap backup software solution. Right now we are using Acronis version 9.1 and when it works its meh but more often than not it is a PITA. I am using 2x8TB nas drives and back up around 1TB once a week and incrementals every weekday. What I liked about Acronis is that I can mount an image and just copy a file from that.My version is extremely old and I dont know if the latest version still supports instant mounting of an image to just drag out a file from an incremental.So I ask you guys, what back up software do you recommend that is 1. Cheap, like $1000 or under2. Supports bare metal restoring3. reliable

Windows Server Backup Schedule

Hello

I've a problem with two Windows 2008 R2 servers (up to date) which are two domain controllers.

I use Windows Server Backup to save servers on a remote shared folder. Backups scheduled finished successfully during more than one year.

But 2 weeks ago, backups scheduled  do not start

If I start jobs manually, they work perfectly. For scheduled jobs, I didn't see any log (event viewer, system or application, or Windows/Backup).

Is there anyone who can help me please ?

Thanks, and sorry for my english maybe faulty..

Alex
