Windows Server 2008 backup schedule wizard not showing volumes

$

Hi folks,

We are running into issues when attempting to configure a Windows Backup schedule through either running the Backup Schedule wizard or through using the wbadmin utility. While I have previously posted this issue on a separate forum (with no luck) I’ve restructured this description based on the responses received and am also hoping that this a more suitable forum for the problem we are experiencing.

On running the backup wizard the backup configuration screen shows the backup size to be 0KB for the Full Server option or if I choose ‘Custom’ and go to ‘select backup items’ the volume list is empty. However the later ‘select destination disk’ screen of the wizard lists all of the disks attached to the server along with the associated volume letters (via clicking the ‘Show All Available Disks’ option).

On the backup wizard reaching the summary stage it then proceeds to format the destination disk. On completion of this format the wizard status then changes to ‘Creating backup schedule’ at which point it then fails with the message “The specified number of volumes is invalid”.

Equally running the following wbadmin command:

wbadmin ENABLE BACKUP -addtarget:{81737a1c-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} -schedule:21:00 -include:c:

Results in the following error:

“ERROR - One of the source volumes specified cannot be included: c: Please specify source as a volume drive letter or access path (if volume is mounted in a folder). Only volumes on locally attached disks can be backed up.”

The server is a Dell PowerEdge R620 running Windows server 2008SP2 and is operating as expected other than for this windows back issue. Everything appears as normal when I view the disks within the Disk Management Console. Backups used to run on this server fine before it was migrated from old hardware to new hardware using Doubletake Move. Everything else is running fine since the migration apart from Windows backup so not why it would only be effecting Windows backup. I have also ran the wbadmin ‘delete catalog’ command to remove reference to the previous backups that were taken.

Is there any other tests that I can run to determine why Windows backup is having trouble seeing the available volumes at the 'Select Backup items' stage but not at the Select Destination' stage? Any help or pointers in the right direction would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Niall

File-level and VSS system backups

I work in an environment where we back up lots of servers running Server 2008 and 2012 (various editions). Our backup solution employs the VSS system writer, and we also run a file-level backup with very few exclusions specified; we only exclude the Recycle Bin and temporary Internet files. The file level backup attempts to back up all contents of %windir\system32. Does this cause needless overlap, as the VSS system writer should already be backing up at least some contents within that folder? If so, how can I determine what can specifically be excluded from our file system backups and instead rely on the VSS system writer backups?

How to Keep windows 2008 backup for N Days Only

Hi All,

I have windows 2008 R2 Server and I'm trying to set backup of selected folders in to a NAS. Backup work perfect but it keeps backups since I started the backup. Due to this NAS filled and backup stopped. Is there any way I can set backup only for 7days? I check "WBADMIN get versions" and saw 14 snapshots. Is there a way i can delete old snaps?

I do not want to start a new backup every week as it takes 2-3 days to create initial backup.

Make a backup on server 2008 and restore in server 2012 using Windows Server Backup

Hi,

I have a server 2008 full of data and I want to copy that data and move it to a Server 2012.  I am having permissions problems so I thought using backup software might be easier.  I'm not really in a position to "just try it" so I am looking for other peoples' experience if you have tried it before I go ahead.

If I create a backup of my server 2008 drive using Windows Server Backup will I run into problems trying to restore it on a server 2012?

I did look around but it seems most people are backing up and restoring on the same platform or I get heaps of results about SQL servers which is not what I'm dealing with.  Any feedback and experience would be welcome.

Thanks

Change label of Windows Server Backup target using Powershell?

$

Hi all!

Recently had a portable had disk failure that I use in my backup routine, so then had to add a new one into the cycle by using Powershell (as the stupid interface has that bug where you can't run the wizard if not all of the target disks are attached - nice one Microsoft!!)

Anyway, i digress ...I have successfully added the drive, but was not at any point given the option to give a name/label to the disk. When I originally configured the backup through the GUI, I could label all the disks (Monday, Tuesday ...etc...) so they could be easily identifiable through the GUI when having to restore etc...

So, my question is: can I use Powershell to rename the Label of the backup target retrospectively? ...or is there a "Label Parameter" that I can use when adding the target disk via Powershell?

Many thanks :)

Dug.

ps: my OS is SBS2011 if required - I hear that there is finally a hotfix for this issue, but only for 2012 ...took long enough!!

Windows Server 2008 Backups - Task running successfully but no backups

I've got a strange one here and I could use some help; I can't seem to find any other reports of this problem.

I've got a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 STD and I'm using the built in Windows Server Backup utility to backup to an external USB drive.  Every day the "next backup" shows the correct date, but the next day there is no backup in the messages window and there is no backup to restore from.

In the history for the scheduled task there is a series of events that shows the task as being triggered, running and completing in an unusually short window.

I've looked in the event logs and each day there is an event saying that the backup started, but no completions since my last reported backup.  I don't see any evidence of any running backups.

Has anybody heard of this behavior before?

Thanks,

Nick

Bare Metal Restore of a Domain Controller leaves other volumes offline after reboot

$

hi,

I'm testing a bare metal restore of a Windows 2008 R2 domain controller using just builtin Windows Backup. The server is a VMWare virtual machine with the following configuration:

C: Os

D: NTDS

E: Logs

F: Sysvol

Once I restore the server, which goes flawless, I reboot and after startup I get a blue screen saying that the server cannot find the AD files.

Using F8, I startup in DSRM. Diskmanagement in DSRM shows me that all disks but the C: drive are offline. Once I set the disks online and reboot the DC starts up just fine. I am able to fix it but it leaves me puzzled.

I checked the disk signatures with mountvol and they are exactly the same as the original. A co-worker mentioned he saw this with other 2008+ servers too. Couldn't find anything related online ? I even made a new backup and restores it to a new VM so it can be reproduced.Anyone know why these disks are offline after a bare metal restore ?

Anyone ?

Thanx,

Thorwald

Hello All,

I've got a client with a WD Sentinel running Storage Server (Server 2008 R2 based). We setup Windows Server Backup and it worked for a couple of backups. We then added a second drive and encrypted both with Bitlocker. Now, I'm getting the following error in the logs. It happens right after the volume shadow copies are created, when the dialog box says "preforming consistency check." There are no other errors that I can find. Any thoughts?

Took it into a shop and they didn't know what it meant.

Its so annoying as the laptop isn't old at all so would appreciate anyone's help!

SBS 2008 Backup fails with error 2155348010

I know there are tons of posts about the size of the sector size. This is not the issue as we are using a 512 sector size, and the backup was running fine until a few weeks ago.  I have run diagnostics on the drive, run checkdsk, and everything checks out. I haven't seen anything recent on this issue.

Hi, I'm trying to back up my system to external Hard drive, but I can't exclude my data drive from back up option. it says it's required for system recovery. in my previous back up I can exclude the data drive but now I can't. the D Drive is just purely for data and is huge.

if I uncheck the "enable system recovery" option then I can exclude the data drive. but this is system back up. I need it to be available for system recovery

please help.

thanks.

Manage Server 2012 Backups from Windows 8.1

Hello,

I am trying to find out if it is possible to manage server 2012 backups from a windows 8.1 workstation via GUI or is the CLI the only option?

I found a few articles online that mention to use a computer management console > storage > backup (but from what I know it only works if you're connecting from a 2012 server itself)

Thank you in advance!

incremental hyper-v backups using windows server backup in windows server 2012 r2

currently we have a windows server 2012 r2 server with only hyper-v installed and the windows server backup feature installed. this server has 2 virtual instances. and we currently have it set to backup only the virtual servers and the host component, and every night it does a full backup. currently have tried it with and without shadow copies set on the volumes that the vhds reside, and also vss full and copy backup. and also specifying the faster backup performance. this is going to an external usb rdx drive via network share even though it is directly connected to this server. is there any other things i can try to get it to do an incremental backup. we currently also use the free altaro for this server also.

Modify Backup Items Without Target Drives Plugged In

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 install running with Windows Server Backup. I have it setup to backup to three target destinations (my X: Y: and Z: drive, one for onsite, offsite, and one for rotation). The issue I'm having now is I'd like to add an additional folder to the backup but it won't let me unless I have all three drives plugged in (which I don't want to do, they're off site/on rotation for a reason). Does anyone know how I can get around this?

Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 not Performing Incremental Backup

$

I have Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 running server backup to a locally attached e-sata disk (the backup disk). It takes backup of the system partitions as well as of selected folders from the D: drive (data drive dontaing shared folders etc.).

The backup runs fine, but it takes long time due to the amount of data on the D: drive. This data changes seldom, so I tried to configure the Server Backup to take incremental backups of that drive (in the server backup snap-in, see attached screen dump). However, this had no influce on the backup and it still takes full backup (see attached screen shot).

What am I doing wrong?

Additional info:

- Server backup was configured trough the dashboard.

- The D: drive also contains the Client Backups folder. It is included for backup.

- The D: drive contains a Hyper-V machine (but at time of backup it was not running).
