Restore an AD forest, cannot restore from Windows Server Backup

Hello.

I have a 2012 R2 Hyper-V server. Here I run a few 2012 R2 (Gen 2 VM's) domain controllers and use Windows Server Backup on one of the DC's to create a Full server backup to an additional .vhdx attached to the VM. I want to test this backup, simulating a full wipe of the environment.

I create a new vm (Gen 2) and attach a blank disk, an 2012 R2 ISO and the .vhdx file containing a full backup. I folllow these procedures (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc781218(v=ws.10).aspx#BKMK_FullServerRecovery) but the server only reports that it cannot find any system images. When I go into the command prompt I am able to find the disk containing the backup without any problems so the disk is available to the vm.

Any suggestions?

Cloning Server 2008 R2 Foundation 250Gb HDD into one another with 500Gb?

Hi, good morning, on Brazil time.

I have a Server 2008 R2 Foundation installed under HP Proliant ML110 G6 and until last Friday the scenario of disk management was this:

Disk 0: BKP of SISREV (our ERP);

Disk 1: 465Gb Dynamic | Mirrored with disk 2 (but both disks had no data, their emprty)

Disk 2: 465Gb Dynamic | Mirrored with disk 1

Disk 3: 250Gb for 100Mb System reserved | C: with 135,13 Gb | M: 97,65 Gb for data share - Dynamic disk.

Just to mention I've inherit this scenario from earlier support team.

And then I realize that Disk 3 have S.M.A.R.T. alert and people, a while ago, claiming slowness using folder shares and etc...

Then my first reaction was: "let's clone this disk while it's still booting".

I then used Macrium Reflect to copy dynamic volumes from disk 3 into disk 2.

The process did not finished properly. Without knowing I've broke the mirrored disks (that still empty), and ran into a big mess.

Reflect change the partitions ID, I've terminated with HDD showing up error 0xc000000e that boot device was inacessible.

After many work around with diskpart, bootbcd and others and a little web search I've restored the access and boot to the default system disk 3 (250Gb).

Well, for now my question is: I still have S.M.A.R.T. alerts on this HDD and this server holds information about a company since 2009. I wouldn't like to loose this.

Is there a way to clone this actual disk into another one of 465Gb WITHOUT LOSING OR CRAPPING THE EXISTING DATA, TABLE INFORMATION AND ON AND ON...???

A help would be appreciated.

RAID or Server Backup?

I am working on medical office in which they have a RAID 1 for the operating system (Windows Server 2008 R2) and a solo drive for the databases (2). The second drive does not have any RAID and I was going to to buy a new HDD to do another RAID 1, but I found out that the second HDD was a WD Green drive and should not be used for a RAID.

At this point I called WD and they confirmed that the Red ones are the ones for RAID but then I will have to buy 2 drives and move the data from the green one to one of the red one to make the RAID.

In the other hand I can use the server back-up tool to back-up the data but I don't think that's the best way to do it.

Is it better using Server Back-up or do the RAID Mirror?

Windows Server Backup hangs every 2'nd time

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials which runs in Hyper-V on an HP Microserver (gen. 8) with host OS WS2012 R2. The guest VM is running a backup job every night to a physical pass through disk, but  since about one month back in time it has begun freezing the system.

If I reboot the server the backup job runs as expected the first night, but the second night it gets stuck at "Backup in progress…" and a CPU load of almost 100%, same thing every time. :(

I can't find anything relevant in the event logs… What might be causing this trouble?

was unable to create a snapshot of the selected volume 0x186C2

Hello,

I'm novice to this area, after the execution of all the instructions for setting up the backup agent gives an error message: "Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent was unable to create a snapshot of the selected volume. Please try the operation again. If the issue persists, contact Microsoft Support(0x186C2)".

So,I experience a problem making a snapshot of selected volume.

Operating System Windows Server 2012 installed on the virtual machine in the cloud, on the server the agent is installed and the file backup is also on this server.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Vyacheslav.

Server 2012: Backup issues with Hyper-V, need succesfull backup asap.

We have a HP Proliant ML350 running Server 2012 + 4 Hyper-V servers (Exchange, SQL, RDS and ADDC). The USB ports on the proliant are version 2.0 so backing up to an external harddisk is not an option (takes way too long since total is about 1.5Tb). We would like to create a backup to a NAS drive since the speed is a lot faster, so we bought a DLINK Nas. However, the backup starts creating a shadowcopy an than stops because it has permission issues. The strange thing is that every other application can write to the NAS without a problem. Since we have 2 smart fail drives in a RAID5 we would like to have a succesfull backup as soon as possible. Any tips or comments the will not need us to reboot the server (because of the risk with the failing drives)are most welcome!!!

Windows Server 2012 r2 Hypervisor backup

I have (2) Hyper-V Hosts with several VM's running on a cluster. I want to backup the hosts on a routine basis. Knowing the vm's are periodically and randomly moved between the hosts, I'm not entirely certain how these movements will affect the restore of a host should one be needed.

I use Veeam to back up my virtual machines with great success, but nothing to backup my hosts. Am I thinking\worrying too much about backing up my hosts? I was thinking of using Windows Server Backup, but I can't get a solid answer pertaining to what will happen with my running vm's at time of backup. Do my VM's will need to be stopped, moved to another Host while backup is running? I'm not sure and would like to know for sure before risking a catastrophic experiment. I'm in a 24X7X365 environment so downtime is out of the question.

I'm looking to my fellow professionals to provide me with understanding on my following questions:

1. - Can I use Windows Server Backup to backup my Hyper-V hosts in a clustered environment?

2. - If I can use Windows Server Backup, can my VM's be running at the time of the backup? Keep in mind my domain controllers are in this clustered environment.

3. - If I can't use Windows Server Backup, or is ill-advised to do so, what are your recommendations for a backup solution?

3. - I'm not sold out on the Windows Server Backup, I think it has become a solid tool and included with my 2012 R2, and VSS friendly, why not use it? However, if you have knowledge of a better solution to my dilemma, I would be very appreciative of your professional advice.

Much thanks in advance for you help.

Next Backup date 12/30/1899 12:00am error

Hi,

Firstly I'd like to mention that I have found posts with the same question-error, tried everything that was proposed as a solution and still face this situation. I have a windows 2008 server with AD and client PCs all living together on the same domain. This backup error is present at some client Pcs while others run the backup scheduled flawlessly.

Once again I mention that I have double checked that I have correct Time Zones, correct date and time, both in Windows and BIOS. Have tried to change the scheduled tasks' "configure for" part to windows 7 and so, with no result. And generally everything else that was proposed at this post, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/next-backup-date-reads-12301899-1200am/62637bf9-7de4-446a-be51-f68e299c9ea1?rtAction=1411015328406 , I have tried to do with no luck. So I am asking for help on this issue, because it can't be that some PCs of mine work fine and some are not. Thank you in advance for your support.

"Compacting Virtual Disk(s)" on every backup

Our backups on our virtual windows server 2012 R2 which is hosted on Hyper-V server 2012 R2 have been taking at least 3 hours longer than they used to.
We use windows Server Backup for nightly backups which backs up to a local volume. We also use a powershell script for the weekly backup which also runs through wbadmin and backs up to a network share.
A couple weeks ago the backups started taking 3-5 hours longer.  I monitored them and noticed that they have been taking hours to compact the virtual hard disks at the end of the backups.
I refereed to the following link about this process and it should not be happening for every backup.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2524602/en-us

We installed windows updates after this problem began but its is still happening for every backup.

What can we do to stop this?

2008R2 Server Image to Different Backup Server

We are considering imaging our current 2008R2 HP server with NovaBackup Business Essentials. This will allow us to restore to different hardware in case the primary server goes down for an extended time.

- are there issues with this?

- will 2008/r2 run on different hardware once the device drivers are installed?

we hope to get away from purchasing a 2nd Windows Server 2008R2 and CALs just to have it sit there.

Thanks.

Full Forest Recovery of Windows Server 2012 R2

$

Hi,

I'm currently planning a recovery strategy for a single forest, single domain environment.

There are 4 x 2012 R2 domain controllers and all FSMO roles are held by a single DC.

In the event of a catastrophic failure resulting in all domain controllers across all sites being destroyed, would be acceptable to restore the FSMO role holder from backup?

All I can find on the matter, is the paragraph;

"While it is not recommended to restore an operations master role holder in the interest of simplicity, some organizations may choose to restore one for other advantages. For example restoring the RID master may help prevent problems with managing RIDs during the recovery."

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc757662(v=ws.10).aspx

If all the roles are held by one DC, I'd say that removes any complexity from it and restoring this DC would be the way to go in the event of a total failure.

Is there any other reason not to restore the FSMO role holder in this case?

Thanks in advance!

M
