This is a physical server.

I have tried this KB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009272 to fix permission issue on Winsxs temp & filemaps folders but still no go.

restarted cryptographic services, several server reboots also.

then i found a hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2182466 from Micrsoft for same issue and tried that too but the hotfix is not applicable to my servers as the servers are patched upto date.

wbengine.exe file version hosted on my server is 6.1.7601.17514 which is latest than the one in hotfix kb listed.

when i run "vssadmin list writers" - system writer is not showing and is missing.

Hello. I have a Windows 2012 R2 server running Hyper-V and Windows Backup returning the error "Backup succeeded but some components backed up were inconsistent in the snapshot." The backup that's failing is of a virtual machine running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard created using Sysinternals Disk2VHD. The event log on the VM shows this error:

Source: vmicvss

Event ID: 16

"Could not find a matching original Lun for shadow Lun \\.\PhysicalDrive1."

This is followed by:

Any help would be much appreciated.

Transferring Shared Folder's Permissions/Settings

We have an old server running Windows 2008R2, the hardware is about to retire.  DFS has not been setup.  Is there such a thing as a shared folder configuration file so that we can simply transfer the folder to a new box without having to configure the share/security settings of the folders? Thanks! :)

We have our server set to backup to an internal HDD (E:), and then copy all the files in E: to different locations for storage (a NAS for instance).  I scheduled a copy to a USB drive, but I can't get the recovery wizard to see the backup it now contains.  I choose "A backup stored in another location" and then "Remote shared folder", as the USB (G:) does not show up in Local drives.  I now need to enter a UNC (it won't accept the "G:\" path), so I shared the USB drive and enter "\\SERVER\G\2014-09-23", which is the path to the parent of the WindowsImageBackup folder on the USB drive.  At this point I get the above error "The backup location does specified does not contain any backup"

All the files look to have copied OK, and have the same Date Modified as on the server: as far as I can tell it's identical, and yet it won't mount. Help?

Disk recovery of backup device

I had two drives fail in my HP DL380 running Microsoft SBS 2008 R2. I replaced the drives and reloaded Windows 2008 disk 1.  I've been backing up the server daily to an external hard drive however, when I booted from the first disk from SBS 2008 and went to "repair" and then chose to restore, the backup system could not find any of my restore points.

Someone on the SBS forum recommended downloading a tool “MiniTool Power Data Recovery 6.8” which allowed me to see my backup files.  I was given an option to recover the files to another drive which I did.  Now I have a group of files about 2GB each under WindowsImageBackup directory labeled like:

Windows backup doesn't seem to recognize these files when I attempt to get the restore application to find them.  It was recommended that I rename one of the files “Backup.vsd” and place it on a standard NTFS or FAT partition in a subdirectory “<drive>:\WindowsImageBackup\<server name>\” which I did however Windows 2008 backup does not see the file.

I'm sure that each of these files is a backup file due to the date and time stamp as well as the size of the file however Microsoft is being very mysterious as to the file structure of the drive. Disk Manager states that it is a NTFS partition however you have to mount it to view it.  When I mount the drive, I see no files however the space is missing so I know the files are there. Is there a tool that would “undelete” the files on a backup partition?

System Stat Backup Failure

Having a drive in my Raid 5 array with an imminent failure.

Dell says that it is "punching" (??) and creating data issues for the other drives for the future.

They sent me the replacement drive, but recommend I clear out and rebuild the array. The maching is my PDC, hosting VMs also (Including Exchange)

I was planning to do a Bare Metal Backup/Restore.

I have all my data backed up, but did not want to have to reinstall the Domain, etc.

System State is NOT backing up, either using GUI or Command Line.

Errors:

The backup of the system state failed [9/25/2014 4:18 PM].
Log of files successfully backed up:
C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup-25-09-2014_16-12-58.log

Log of files for which backup failed:
C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup_Error-25-09-2014_16-12-5

The operation ended before completion.
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

Any ideas?

Tried a MS Hotfix that was posted as applicable, but turns out it was not.

Deadline is tomorrow.

I have another machine (Server 2003) that I could transfer the Domain roles to, but hate to, unless I must.

Thanks in advance for any help/ideas.

Back up fails on my laptop using windows 8

Try as I might I cannot get an answer to my problem. Help!

I run a WD Sentinel DX4000 windows server R2 (with service pack 1 installed) on my desktop which runs on 64bit windows 7. I have recently purchased and run a laptop on windows 8 and I have installed the laptop on the server. I can access shared files on both the desktop and laptop with no problem, but each time I try to run an automatic or a manual backup of the laptop to the server, the wizard starts o k, telling me the backup is 'one %' successful, then the back up stops and the server window says the back up has failed and a error triangle appears next to the laptop in the users box on the dashboard.

Is there a upgrade pack from Microsoft which I need to install to overcome this problem? or any ideas what I am doing wrong.

Server 2008 Std R2 Backup warnings

Hello,
I'm having a problem for a while now with Windows Server Backup (with VSS). I don't really know when this started.
The thing is 3 of 5 partitions are backing up with warnings. Process can't backup some of the files which are:

Process can't access these files because they are being used by other process. As I found out these files are disk quota files. I also read that I may backup them manually but I don't like that idea.
I tried disabling Antivirus software, deleting excludes from backup, changing time of backup. Nothing works.
I got 2 questions.

1. Will these errors make restoring backup impossible?
2. How I can fix this?

System State Backup - 2008R2 - Volume Shadow Copy Error

I am attempting to do  system state backup in my Test environment.  I am running Hyper-V on a standalone "sandbox" server.  I have configured a semi-duplicate environment.

We are updating the schema soon, and I would like to do a System State restore for practice and I haven't actually had to do one in about 10 years.

I am running 2008R2 DC as a VM in my Hyper-V environment.  It has a C: and E: volume, VSS is enabled on e: and set to Unlimited.  I set my set "BackupLocation=e:\adbackups" and attempt to run wbadmin.exe start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:"E:" (with quotes or without it still fails.

My error from command is Error - Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error (0x800423f4) which appears to be a generic error.  In the Backup Event Viewer it shows as Event ID 9, another generic error.

I am running as Domain Admin, and I checked that I have Backup Operator rights.  Volume Shadow Copy service is running.

Any way to throttle disk IO of Windows Server Backup

$
0

Windows Server Backup (on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials with all latest updates) still maxes our disk IO during backup. Have 2x3Tb (as a Storage Space) SATA2 and 1x4Tb (split into 3 partitions) SATA3 being backed up to a 6Tb SATA3 disk. During backup, the media services are not accessible, and logon via remote terminal is so slow as to often timeout. File shares seem just about usable, at least sometimes.

Given the size of the backup, they typically take around 10 hours - making scheduling of these alongside the daily client backups as well as normal use of the server almost impossible! As the Windows Server Essentials Dashboard has very limited capability for scheduling backups (fixed at daily, and same items every day) this becomes extremely limited...

Is there a way to throttle the disk IO of the backup job - I have tried a number of utilities to set the IO priority to Low, but this effectively stops the backup :-(

If not, what is the best way to make a suggestion to Microsoft that the capability to limit disk IO needs to be added tothe Windows Server Backup tool (in a way that works with the Windows Essentials front-end).... and ideally, the Windows Server Essentials options for server backup should allow more flexible scheduling supporting more than one job and allowing frequency other than daily so that you could have e.g. weekly to backup the client backups, daily to backup shared folders and Windows 8.x history files...

Bare Metal Backup Windows Server 2012 R2 Problem

I have a fresh install of Windows Server 2012 R2 on an IBM x3530 M4 server.  I'm trying to do a full bare metal backup to a local volume, which is presented from a SAN.

The backup fails stating that there isn't enough disk space.  This is very misleading as the OS on the C:\ is only taking up 15GB and the free Space on the SAN volume is 800GB.

From doing a little reading online i have found others who have had problems backing up Recovery Partitions, click here.  So i just did a backup of the C:\ to the same SAN volume and that works fine so i have a feeling this is something to do with the Recovery Partition.  I also have a partition which is called the EFI System Partition which i'm unsure what this is.  Below is a screen grab of the Disk Management on the system.  Can someone give me a way to do a full Bare Metal backup without having to reinstall the whole OS.  Thanks

Our backups on our virtual windows server 2012 R2 which is hosted on Hyper-V server 2012 R2 have been taking at least 3 hours longer than they used to.
We use windows Server Backup for nightly backups which backs up to a local volume. We also use a powershell script for the weekly backup which also runs through wbadmin and backs up to a network share.
A couple weeks ago the backups started taking 3-5 hours longer.  I monitored them and noticed that they have been taking hours to compact the virtual hard disks at the end of the backups.
I refereed to the following link about this process and it should not be happening for every backup.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2524602/en-us

We installed windows updates after this problem began but its is still happening for every backup.

What can we do to stop this?

Windows backup not being seen after server failure windows 2012

Running Lenovo thinkserver with Raid 5 with 4 drives and Server 2012 Standard Had 2 drives go at the same time so had to reconfigure and reinstall everything, all data lost. It was under warranty so the tech came out and replaced 1 drive and am currently waiting for the 2nd drive. So currently am running a 3 disk Raid 5. I used windows backup to create full backups and now when I try to restore from that backup, it just hangs and hangs and hangs and won't find the backups. THe backup is stored on Seagate Expansion+ 3TB drive. I know there are some issues with these (which apparantly I didn't know) but I have to get this backup off and installed somehow, I can't handle resetting up the entire system. Please help, I am desperate!

Question regarding Windows Server Backup for 2012r2 and multiple disks

$
0
0

I'm a little new to this, so sorry if this is repeat. I looked around but couldn't find what I was looking for.

I want to setup my backup to rotate between two external USB drives. I know I have to connect both of them at the same time for the initial setup. But my question comes when I start rotating the disks nightly, or weekly or whatever the rotation will be.

Situation: Disk A is plugged in on day 1, does full backup (I'm assuming). Disk B is plugged in on day 2, does full backup? Assuming yes, when I plug disk A back in on day 3, will it do a full backup again, or does it do an incremental backup?

Then, once I plug back in Disk B on day 4 or 5 or whenever I plug it back in and the backup runs (disk A unplugged), will it backup everything since the last time the backup was ran for Disk B (so 2 or 3 days worth of data) or will it only put information onto the drive since the last backup ran in general (the backup ran the night before for Disk A)?

Again, sorry if this is a basic question. Trying to help out a friend and don't have a ton of experience yet with 2012.

Thanks in advance!
