Next Backup date 12/30/1899 12:00am error

Hi,

Firstly I'd like to mention that I have found posts with the same question-error, tried everything that was proposed as a solution and still face this situation. I have a windows 2008 server with AD and client PCs all living together on the same domain. This backup error is present at some client Pcs while others run the backup scheduled flawlessly.

Once again I mention that I have double checked that I have correct Time Zones, correct date and time, both in Windows and BIOS. Have tried to change the scheduled tasks' "configure for" part to windows 7 and so, with no result. And generally everything else that was proposed at this post, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/next-backup-date-reads-12301899-1200am/62637bf9-7de4-446a-be51-f68e299c9ea1?rtAction=1411015328406 , I have tried to do with no luck. So I am asking for help on this issue, because it can't be that some PCs of mine work fine and some are not. Thank you in advance for your support.

Hi guys,

Can you help me here? How can I remotely change the resolution of the server? I actually searched the web, but I only got results of RDC's resolution, It doesnt help, this is what i want to change. I believe I can change this by alternating the registry, but I dont know how. You may want to follow the address bar: Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Display > Screen Resolution.

Thanks guys, your help will always be useful :D

Bare Metal Backup Windows Server 2012 R2 Problem

I have a fresh install of Windows Server 2012 R2 on an IBM x3530 M4 server.  I'm trying to do a full bare metal backup to a local volume, which is presented from a SAN.

The backup fails stating that there isn't enough disk space.  This is very misleading as the OS on the C:\ is only taking up 15GB and the free Space on the SAN volume is 800GB.

From doing a little reading online i have found others who have had problems backing up Recovery Partitions, click here.  So i just did a backup of the C:\ to the same SAN volume and that works fine so i have a feeling this is something to do with the Recovery Partition.  I also have a partition which is called the EFI System Partition which i'm unsure what this is.  Below is a screen grab of the Disk Management on the system.  Can someone give me a way to do a full Bare Metal backup without having to reinstall the whole OS.  Thanks

Setup Incremental backup Schedule

I was wondering if it is possible to force Windows Server backup in 2012 to run a Full backup on say Friday nights, and then run incremental backups every other day, or would I need to create separate backup schedules?

"Compacting Virtual Disk(s)" on every backup

Our backups on our virtual windows server 2012 R2 which is hosted on Hyper-V server 2012 R2 have been taking at least 3 hours longer than they used to.
We use windows Server Backup for nightly backups which backs up to a local volume. We also use a powershell script for the weekly backup which also runs through wbadmin and backs up to a network share.
A couple weeks ago the backups started taking 3-5 hours longer.  I monitored them and noticed that they have been taking hours to compact the virtual hard disks at the end of the backups.
I refereed to the following link about this process and it should not be happening for every backup.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2524602/en-us

We installed windows updates after this problem began but its is still happening for every backup.

What can we do to stop this?

Unable to add extra disk to WSB

I have a 2012 server running Hyper-V with 4 VM servers running 2012. Backup of all of them is done from within each server using Windows Server Backup.

I have a removable drive system that uses 1 TB cartridges. On each cartridge I created a VHDX file for each of the 4 VMs to attach to each and use as a backup drive in WSB. The cartridges are swapped periodically. Since both drives can't be online at the same time, to set this up, with cartridge #1 in place I attached the VHDX in Disk Management on each server. Then in WSB I added the first attached drive. Then I swapped in cartridge #2, attached the VHDX in Disk Management and using wbadmin at the command prompt, I added the drive from that cartridge.

This was working fine until recently when I started having troubles with the backup of 2 of the VMs. On cartridge #1 all backups are working fine. On cartridge #2 two of the backups work fine but two do not. After trying to resolve the problem without success, I finally decided to delete the VHDX file for those 2 servers on cartridge #2 and create new ones. But when I tried to add them via wbadmin after the drive is formatted and labeled by wbadmin there is another line displayed that says "The system cannot find the path specified". Because of this WSB does not see the second drive.

I've used this same setup on other Hyper-V setups and never ran into this. I've run out of things to try or look at. I hope someone here has an idea of why I would get that message at the end of the process: wbadmin enable backup -addtarget:{disk identifier number}.

deduped disks run full backups when set to incremental every 28 days

I have 3 servers with 4 disks configured with data dedupe. All are VMs in VMware ESX-i 5.5. All are server 2012R2 64 bit. I use both EMC legato and Symantec Backup Exec to backup the 4 disks. When using EMC the incrementals are ignored every 4th week/28th day and it runs a full backup instead. I used Windows backup to confirm this was only an EMC issue. I am unable to find out what is scheduled every 28th day on disks configured with data dedupe. All my configs are out of the box default. I have not added anything. EMC engineers have been unable to find the fault in 4 months. I have gone through every scheduled event on the server, there is nothing that runs every 4 weeks. all other servers act normally. Even disks not configured with data dedupe on the same servers run incremental backups properly. This is isolated to EMC and data dedupe disks. I also get the "quota limit exceeded" emails "User ENG\Administrator has reached the quota limit for quota" every 28th day on the same day the inc. backups are ignored and fulls run. I cannot find out what invokes the emails to be sent. There must be something that does a whole refresh of the data on the disk and resets some element of the file and folder metadata that is not used by either Backup Exec or server 2012 R2 windows server backup. Any suggestions what runs on data dedupe configured disks by default every 28 days?

In case primary Win 2012 server fails - How to Make Windows 2012 R2 Server a secondary?

Okay, I have a server running windows 2012 with Hyper V running 4 vm's.  This is the primary but if it fails I want a secondary server running windows 2012 R2 to take over.  This take over can be made manually because I read somewhere that the hard drives would have to be redone to setup the automated function.

How can I set this up with the existing Hyper V info and not have to start over.?

Is clustering an option??

How can I do this with the least amount of hassle??

Thank you in advance!!!!!

VSS timeouts on Hyper-V guest, Exchange Replication Service, CU5

$

I'm having a problem with a Hyper-V guest that is running Exchange 2013 CU5.  I will say I have had issues with this VM since installing CU5.

Note:  I am doing a backup from within the VM guest, not from the host.

The scheduled backup takes a long time to complete, an entire weekend to backup 150GB to an ISCSI disk.  In addition the CPU time is very high (58%) while this is happening.  Attempting to open the backup manager window consistently makes the CPU time hit 99%.  When this happens Outlook clients will fail.  When backup manager opens it will continually say "Reading data; please wait..."  If the backup manager happened to already been open, the backup job will say "Volume 1 0% of 4 volumes."

The processes taking up the CPU time are Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service  (24%), Microsoft Block level backup service (62%) and virtual disk service (12%).  Memory use always hovers around 65%.  If I attempt to kill the processes with task manager, there is no change.  If I use the kill executable it will say the process is not running.  I cannot stop the corresponding service either.  I cannot stop the backup.  I cannot query vss writer status.  I cannot restart the ISCSI service (device in use.)  Restarting the NAS that contains the ISCSI target does nothing.  The only recourse is to restart the server.

If I restart the server and start a backup fairly soon after, the backup completes normally, in about an hour.  During a normal backup CPU usage is at about 30%.  The Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service runs at 0% CPU time as well as the virtual disk service.  The Microsoft Block Level Backup Engine runs at 10% CPU time.  The scheduled backup is set to start at 9:30pm.  I have also tried changing backup times.  If I restart the server at 4 am and do not run a manual backup, the scheduled backup performs poorly.

After some digging I find these errors:

As you can see the errors happen almost immediately after the backup starts.

In addition the following VSSwriters show a last error "timed out"

Microsoft Exchange Writer
Com+ RegDB Writer
Shadow Copy Optimization Writer
Registry Writer

I will add also the following issues I have been experiencing ever since installing CU5:

1 Version buckets threshold easy reached.  Had to modify threshold and set limits on email size. Sometimes still happens.
2 After a restart of the server, the server may have no, or limited connection to the network.  It may or may not have an exclamation point on the network icon.  If there is no exclamation point, it can ping other network resources, but inbound requests and pings, will fail.  The event log shows that the network should be available while booting, but it's not since it cannot communicate with active directory.  The fix for this is to disable/enable the network adapter and then all is well.

I really need some help figuring this out.  Again, never had an issue with this server prior to Exchange 2013 CU5 being installed.

Windows Server Backup clearing previous backups

We have multiple Windows 2008 R2 servers running Windows Server Backup.  All are backing up to either an internal hdd or a USB hdd.  They will be working fine for months at a time and then we will check the system and it will have erased the history and we will have only a few backups instead of many months of backups.  For example, our server currently only shows 9 backups and should have at least 50 or 60.  The Backup hdd is a 2 TB drive that shows 79 % free.  The command "wbadmin get versions" shows only the 9 copies.  VSSADMIN List shadowstorage shows the vss space for the backup drive to be unbounded.  What is the solution to resolve the issue of Windows Server Backup clearing the previous backups when there is space available?

Server 2012 Backup rotation

I have a virtual server running on Server 2012 (not R2 for now) with 15 Virtual Machines.

I`m using default Windows Server Backup, have dedicated 4Tb drive for backups. So, the problem is after backup drive is runing out of space (about 4-5 days) server start doing just system state backup. After rescheduling it`s again backup virtual machines for few days and after that backup just system state.

I know that my backup storage is not really big, but i don`t need to keep backups for years, few days is enought. I just want to have some kind of automated backup rotation. Is it possible?

Windows Server backup 2012 looks like big black box for me, there is no settings about backups (like differental backups), you just have a scheduller and a destination, nothing more.

Thanks for attention.

Update: Just checked, it`s not even run out of space, there is still about 1,5 Tb free space on backup drive. It`s just stops to backup virtual machines.

Windows Server 2012, Windows Server Backup and iSCSI

Hello all,

We currently are looking into having our Windows Server 2012 virtual machines set up to back up to an iSCSI target. The catch is, we're not sure how to restore any backups made in this fashion if it comes down to a bare-metal restore. Is this possible?

Thanks.

Hi,

What is purpose of taking AD backup ? Only for restore the Objects or apart from anything ?

Normally if my Domain Controller got crashed, we have an option to seize the role after seizing will do metadata cleanup and will place new domain controller.

If i take system state backup what are file i can retrive like User,Computers ? Event Log will come in System State.

If my Domain Controller got crashed and i have system state or full backup. Is that possible make the server up as it is ? If yes how ?

many thanks in advance
