"one or more server hard drives must be checked for errors" every day when backup occurs

$

0

This is on Windows Server 2012R2 Essentials specifically. But I saw the same behavior on 2012 Essentials before switching.

Both on the Dashboard's alerts and daily health reports, it indicates that one or more drives are unhealthy and need to be fixed. However, it does not list any disk specifically. This occurs several minutes after the backups are scheduled, and will change when it happens if I change the time for the backups.

This happens EVERY DAY. Deleting or ignoring the reports just cause it to come back. Disabling backups, or disconnecting the drive they're stored on doesn't fix it. Neither does formatting the drive and setting up backups again.

I've not found any specific errors, and I've scanned the system partitions using their volume ID, and that hasn't helped.

No virus scanner nor disk tools are installed. There are no 3rd party file system filters installed either.

The Event Viewer doesn't indicate any issues specifically either.

This is frustrating and annoying.

Restore Shadow Copies

During a restore using the shadow copy function Windows decided to remove the files , see eventlog message below :

The shadow copies of volume D: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.  Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.

Is there a way to ''undo'' this action? Or recover the shadow copy files?

Backup Files and Folders to Network Storage

I need to backup files and folders from my server to a network storage.

Currently running Windows Server 2012 Standard R2.

My network storage was WD My Cloud 2TB.

I don't wish to use the Windows Server Backup feature because it convert the backup files into image file. I need it just to create a new  folder every time it backup/copy my files from the server to the network storage. Without overwrite it the old files.

Windows 7 Update error

I have read the threads above but the discussion is beyond my technical abilities.  My problem is that every time I turn on my computer it attempts to install downloads from the last time I turned it off.  Near the end of that process it says that it is unable to configure Windows to accept the downloads and reverts to the previous version of Windows without the update.  This considerably increases the time to turn on the machine.  I ran the Windows Update trouble shooter but it came back with "Windows update error Ox80070057".  My question is where should I take my computer to fix this problem?

Restore a backup for client computer

I am trying to recover a couple files that were originally installed on a client computer. I since have reformatted that computer. It was connected to my Windows 2012 essentials server via connector software and backups were done. When trying to access the old backups, I couldn't get to the files I need. I tried to do a complete restore from a USB device to another computer and it wouldn't recognize the data to be restored, it couldn't even recognize any of the backup files. I have the .DAT files, but can't get the data out of them. An ideas on how to get that information from the DAT files? The backup was from right before I changed the system over, so not very old. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

The writer experienced a non-transient error

Hello!

I use Windows Server 2012R2 with Hyper-V role and Windows Server Backup to backup some VMs.

Guest VMs running Windows Server 2012R2 and CentOS 6.5 minimal with all available updates installed.

I have problem with only one VM running CentOS 6.5: The component c2p-dev(offiline) was skipped during the snapshot and will not be available for recovery. Error: The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error is likely to reoccur.

Manually I can do Checkpoint for this VM.

I installed Linux Integration Services 3.5 but error still reoccur.

Nearby VM running same OS and same LIS 3.5 backupped ok.

Here's Event Viewer:

How can I fix it?

2012R2 vss shadow has corrupt system hive

On 2012R2 with all updates as of Oct 9 2014, run the following commands:

vssadmin.exe create shadow /for=c:
mklink.exe /d c:\snap \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1\
reg.exe load HKLM\snap c:\snap\Windows\System32\config\SYSTEM

results in :

ERROR: An I/O operation initiated by the registry failed unrecoverably. The registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the registry.

Is this expected behavior?

I have repeated this test with 2012R2 running as a VM on 3 hypervisors (ESXi, KVM, VirtualBox).

Backing up and restoring a member DC to new hardware.

Hello,

Sounds simple to me but I want to be sure on what I'm doing.

We have many sites with a domain controller at each location. The DC with all the FSMO roles is here at Corp. I need to move one of our member DC controller at a different site to new hardware. It is a Global Catalog, DNS, DHCP and file server.

Can I do this by using windows backup to back up System State, Bare Metal Recovery, System Reserve and Local Disk C: (Full Server) and restore it to the new Hardware as long as my HDD are same or bigger?  Please remember this is a member DC.

I really hope to avoid the demotion of the current member DC and installing a fresh OS on the new hardware and promoting that to a DC.

Thanks

I'm using Windows Server Backup on a Server 2012 machine. I'm trying to backup about 1.2TB worth of Data to a 3TB USB drive. I'm running into issues with backups locking up. I keep getting Event ID 129 Warnings from VHDMP saying "Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort3, was issued." It will fire of this warning every 30 seconds until I unplug the USB drive. I've read that in server 2008 R2 there was an issue backing up more than 2TB of data to a USB drive larger than 2TB, is that still true for Server 2012? I'd rather not have to purchase another backup product.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Backups have the wrong time

Because of serious problems with Server 2012R2 and the fact it activates without permission and support is absolute garbage, I made Windows Server Backups at various stages of the install so I would not have to start the install again from scratch, however the times of the backups when attempting a restore are around 11 hours earlier than the time they where actually made and the time of creation that is shown in the Windows Backup program.

Backing up 2012 RODC with DPM 2012 SP1

Hi All,

I am having issues with setting up a backup of a RODC on server 2012, with our DPM server which is DPM 2012 SP1 with up to date roll ups.  I have been able to get the agent to report as "OK" on the DPM server, but when I try to backup the files I get the below message:

DPM cannot access the path \\?\Volume{lots of numbers} because part of the path has been deleted or renamed

Check the path and enter it again.

ID: 36

Details: Internal error code: 0x80990F43

I have looked around and everything I have found on this is saying it is the shadow copies.  I have removed all of the shadow copies and the scheduled tasks, but still cannot get the file level backup to work.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Sean Buckle

Windows Server Backup hangs every 2'nd time

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials which runs in Hyper-V on an HP Microserver (gen. 8) with host OS WS2012 R2. The guest VM is running a backup job every night to a physical pass through disk, but  since about one month back in time it has begun freezing the system.

If I reboot the server the backup job runs as expected the first night, but the second night it gets stuck at "Backup in progress…" and a CPU load of almost 100%, same thing every time. :(

I can't find anything relevant in the event logs… What might be causing this trouble?

All of a sudden the Windows Backups to External USB Hardrives are taking 48 hours or so to Complete and not the usual 10 or so.

Nothing seems to stand out in the Event Viewer. Any ideas what could have suddenly caused this issue ?

I checked VSS writers and there doesn't seem to be any problem.

Event ID 51 on Windows Server 2012 R2 during backup

Hi all,

During backup operations, on my Windows Server 2012 R2 (Hyper-v role installed) I find this warning in Event Log:

Event ID 51: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk5\DR43 during a paging operation.

How could I solve this issue? or Could I safely ignore this message?

Just for information, before latest OS Update Rollup installation, we also found the event below:

Event ID 157: Disk 5 has been surprise removed.

Thanks a lot,

David

VSS Error 2008R2

Hi,

I have a problem. Got a 2TB drive, with 1,1TB free space plugged to a 2008 R2 server. And since 2 months I get a ID 12289 application log error, with a description like this:

DeviceIoControl(\\?\Volume{xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx}

00000000000001D4,0x0053c008,000000000015C010,0,000000000011B5C0,4096,[0]).  hr = 0x80070079.

Tried various registery solutions, but nothing changes. Every time I try to manually backup the server I get the same error and the service stops.

Please help.
