RoboCopy command wiped out new directory on destination server

Hey all,

I am just wondering if anyone could shed some light on why when I ran a Robocopy command (see below)

that it removed a folder (which was not on the source) which was created on the destination drive.

robocopy \\serverold\C:\Data  E:\Data /ZB /MIR /W:5 /SEC

so example.... Serverold  copied files to Servernew (E:) with above command, however, a folder already residing on Servernew was deleted in the process.

thanks in advance.

BSOD caused by CsvFlt.sys when performing agentless backup through hyper-v host

Hello guys,

I have a 4 node Windows 2012 R2 server cluster, that is used for virtualization. I am running nearly 18 virtual machines.

We have 4 LUNs presented to the cluster: 3 CSV Volumes (2x1TB and 1x730GB) and 1 Quorum Disk (1GB).

We have implemented Acronis Backup Advanced for Hyper-V, but we have critical issues with the Backups. The top of the iceberg was a crash of all nodes on the 17.02.2014 just after 18:00 when the backup rotation starts. The evening backups are incremental and are set to one machine at a time (only production machines, that are around 10) and each machine has a 1 hour window.

We have read, that there was such problem with Windows 2012 and there was a fix, but it seems, the problem is not fixed in Windows 2012 R2 and there is no patch.

We are running IBM server, that have latest drivers and firmware. We also installed latest patches during the 14-15.02.2014 weekend.

We noticed that on 2 cluster, the events before the crash are start of VSS service and on the other 2 are start of VSS and then start of Acronis VSS. Additionally, we notice the following event 5120: "Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('Cluster Disk 1') has entered a paused state because of '(c000020c)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished." happening during backup rotation.

You may find files with the events before the crash, the bug check events, CSV disk events and a dump analysis on the following link.

It is crucial to understand, that when we run backup from within VMs, we do not receive and events of the type 5120 or any crashes. We have not tried to run through Windows Backup utility from hosts.

Please, suggest solutions.

Backup failures and execptions

Hello- I have a Dell T620 running server 2012. The backup has been setup to go to a local usb drive. The backup intermittently fails on 1 of the volumes during the compression portion of the backup or will just fail out right with an error that says "There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.  We are currently running ESET for an AV. I have tried uninstalling it to see if it was causing the issue and it didn't solve it.

I did notice that there are usually event id 153 source disk The IO operation at logical block address 0x22 for Disk 4 was retried during the backup time. Not sure if that is normal or not.

Here is the error from the app log that occurs when the backup fails - The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎02‎-‎13T02:00:11.159719500Z' has failed with following error code '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

If I can provide any additional details please let me know.

Unable to restore from cataloged usb backup disk

$

I have a customer who's SBS 2008 server decided to crash last Saturday night. Fortunately, it was the OS partition that crashed and all of the data was on a different drive. And the disk didn't actually fail - it just somehow got corrupted to the point where Server 2008 would not load. I first attempted to fix it using the bare metal restore process. This appeared to work, but after completion, the server could not find the OS on the disk, no matter how much tinkering I did with the diskpart utility.

Since I knew I had 2 good backup usb drives and a good on-line backup, I decided to go ahead and re-install the OS and then restore AD from the backup. Unfortunately, this is their only server and there was not another domain controller to recover the domain info from. So I restored the OS with no problem and then attempted to do the recovery from the usb drive. This is where things got ugly.

I was able to import the catalog from the usb drives using the wbadmin utility. But after loading the catalog, the server backup would not restore from the disk. It would see the backup date, but when I tried to restore from any listed date, I got this:

So I went ahead and booted into DS recovery mode, hoping that it would work with the command line in wbadmin. It would not. I could run the wbadmin get versions utility and see the list of backups all day long, but when I ran wbadmin startsystemstaterecory, I could not get it to work to save my life. At this point, it was about 9 p.m.. With the customer's permission (and $500 of his money), we made the decision to call Microsoft and try to get some help. The guy I talked to essentially went through all the same steps I had already done and then told me I should try a bare metal restore because he couldn't get it to work either. Well I sure as heck was not going to start another bare metal restore at midnight. So we re-created all the user names, rejoined the machines to the new domain, etc. etc. We were there until after 3 AM. But we got it all put back together except for 1 guy's email. His outlook would not open under the old user profile to do an export to pst.

So this is where I stand right now - all is good with the folks in that office except for the one guy's old email. There is not an ost file on his old profile, so I am guessing that somehow, he was not working in cached exchange mode. I have downloaded a trial version of one of those edb to pst converters and it sees thousands of messages in his mailbox, but won't convert them without ponying up $400.

I have re-created their old server on a VM at my house in the hope that I can somehow figure out a way to get windows to read the backup off of that usb drive. If I can do that, I hope that I can restore their old AD onto the VM, then somehow log into his old email account and dump it out to a pst. So far, I am getting the same errors on the VM that I got on the live machine.

I know this is a mouthful, but I hope I have explained myself well enough that someone might have some ideas about restoring this backup.

Thanks.

Mike

Maximum number of files and sizes to be Backup

Hi all,

I read somewhere saying that Windows Server Backup 2012 is limited to 2TB (MBR partitions), but can be more for GPT partitions.

What i want to know is, is there limitation on number of files/folder?

Thanks.

HI,

My 2008 R2 Server says it has a bad disk and its failing - what steps can I take to try to fix that bad sector on the C:\ drive or swap out and replace the drive with a new one?

It's a BDC and has Solidworks on it and I am running Windows Server Backup on it as well as a tape backup with an old copy of backup exec 2010.

Volsnap error during Server Backup: Event ID: 27 - Shadow copies were aborted during detection because a critical control file could not be opened.

I have been running backups on a Windows 2012 R2 Server (Dell PowerEdge T420) for a few months with no problems.  We backup to a rotation of 3 RDX 1TB Cartridges but found out that Windows Backup does not support removable RDX media.  To get around this problem, we use BackupAssist which still uses Windows Server Backup in the background to complete the backups.

BackupAssist uses a single .vhd container file on the RDX and it is mounted asdrive G:

Again, this worked for a few months with no problems.

Then I ran Windows Update and about 30 updates were applied to the server.  Since then we cannot seem to keep multiple backups on the RDX Cartridge.  Before the Windows Updates, I was able to keep previous backups, sometimes as many as 98 copies.  We are backing up about 30GB of data each night.

Now, since the Windows Updates, I cannot get past 2 or 3 perhaps, and then lose all backup copies and end up with a completed backup, but only 1 backup copy and no previous backups.

We see in the error log the following error, which I believe is the cause of the problem.  Backups run at 8pm nightly.

I have 3 sites setup the same.  2 of the sites had all the Windows Updates applied and then started having this problem.  The above error was never seen until the Windows Updates.  The third site has not had any Windows Updates applied, and we currently have 42 previous backups on the loaded RDX Cartridge.

I have been working with BackupAssist support, but they state that it is simply Windows Server Backup that runs the back end and it is probably a Windows Server issue.  I have been fighting this for 2 months now.

Just wondering if anyone has any idea on the above error.

Thanks in advance to any that can shed some light on this problem.

Do Not Trust WSB Logs/Events: VHDX File restores as zero size from Windows Server Backup

$

On Windows 2012 Server Host Machine:

I had occasion to restore a 118 GB VHDX from backup. However, although it shows in the WSB Recovery Wizard, and neither the Event Logs or the Windows Backup Log Files show any errors, the file restores as zero size. I tried from several previous days' WSB backups as well.

The file is a *.VHDX that is mounted and shared for all machines on my network. It is not attached to a virtual machine.

WSB is set up to backup the Hard Drive letter of the partition the VHDX is stored in (along with a few other files).

When I recover that partition from WSB, the other files restore fine, but the VHDX is restored as size=0. All the VMs (on other partitions) seem to restore OK.

I also had an external Wbadmin backup where I backed up that VHDX file explicitly instead of using the drive letter, and it restored fine.

If I have to backup VHDX files explicitly, then fine. But WSB should not list a file as backed up successfully and available for restore if it cannot, in fact, be restored. I have to wonder if there are any other files that will not restore either. Also, the log files (C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup-dd-mm-yyyy_hh-hh-ss.log) should have reported this problem, rather than record success as "Backup of volume T: succeeded."

The only thing I can think of at this point, is that perhaps it remained locked by a network machine somehow. Even still, WSB should have backed it up in a crash consistent state, or at least give a warning or error.

I review my backup logs and events regularly and there was nothing to indicate any issue at the time of backup. Obviously, WSB is not capable of reliably reporting success and failure, and cannot be trusted.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks,

Bob.

Unable to stop Windows Server Backup

WSE2012. Backup regularly hangs while trying to back up one of our server disks to an external usb drive.  Both source and destination drives check out ok - no fragmentation, disk errors, plenty of free space.  Tried to Stop the backup gracefully via the UI by right-mouse clicking the server listed in Dashboard>Devices tab and choosing Stop backup... but this is unable to stop it.

Tried to stop the block level backup engine service exe (wbengine.exe) but it appears to be orphaned and unkillable.

Task Manager shows wbengine.exe is running, so I've tried doing these things from an elevated command prompt:

1. wbadmin stop job   -- this returns The process could not be terminated. There is no running instance of the task.

2. TASKKILL /F /IM wbengine.exe - same error message as above.

Short of rebooting the machine or unplugging the usb drive (which sometimes works but leads to data corruption), how can the backup be stopped and restarted?

Storage Server 2012 R2 and backups

$

We have a network with a domain server and a few virtual servers. I was looking for a setup that would backup the servers and all of our workstations. I was looking for a backup that would make an image backup but that we would still be able to get at the files. Will Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 work for that? If so how hard would it be to implement without disrupting the current setup? I was looking at the Thecus W4000 or the Thecus W5000 because they come with the server software in a form factor that I think would be ideal. Also, does the Microsoft Azure backup service work as a good offsite backup in this kind of setup.

Bare metal Backup & Full Server backup controversy

Hi everyone,

There is a full backup done for the mission critical server which is not SAN attached and it is confirmed by the backup team too that it is in place through NETBACKUP service , the full backup being taken by them remotely.

But there is also Symantec BESR-Backup Exec System Recovery installed in that server and the baremetal backup is configured to be backed up locally to the D drive of the server itself.

Recently , due to some problem , the server got formatted and reloaded with the Windows server 2008 R2 and BESR is not installed but the backup team has confirmed that they are taking the full backup remotely.

I dont know why they are also taking the BESR backup in the server locally.

Can anybody please explain that is there any difference between the BESR & Full backup?

Thanks & Regards S.Swaminathan Live & let others live!!!

How do I backup all user documents on a storage media with 6 revisions

$

I'm saddled with the task of designing a backup strategy which I've been able to do, now I wonder which is the best approach to ensuring all user documents in the domain is backed up on a central server having 6 revisions of every backup, This is to ensure there would be no data loss in any event and we can refer to the last 6 backups in the event of recovery. I would like to know.

  • Which backup approach is best, I was thinking of folder redirection but some of our users have *.pst folders, which is not a good candidate for redirection.
  • I want to ensure all documents i.e: excel, word, powerpoint, pdf, et al are backed up, wherever they are stored in their hard drives. But is it possible I redirect the whole drive? What are the draw backs if I do so?
  • Which backup software are recommended?
  • TSM readily comes to mind but are there cost effective and reliable alternatives?

Thanks as I anticipate a response

VSS Writers Issue. No Resolution

$

Hello Everyone,

We have around 15-20 servers all are windows server 2003 having issues with backup. Issues are
- VSS writers takes alot of time to get listed
- VSS snapshot fails while taking backup
- Sometimes VSS services gets hung in a "Starting" state, not able to restart or stop the service in that case.
- Sometimes it runs and stops in the middle of the backup

Its been a month and these problems keeps occuring on most of the servers.

We tried registering a set of assemblies and restarted the services. We tried rebooting the servers as well. Still the problem does not seems to resolve.

Backup team uses symantec netbackup 7.5 to backup.
The servers are not patched since long time as it an old environment.
I would request your suggestions to resolve the issues asap as there are many DC's whose backup has not been successful, if they fail it will be a big headache for us.

Would request if anyone has list of hotfixes that would vss issue or a document like that.

Thanks in Advance.
