Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Client restore for UEFI Bios Error

My surface pro 3 has been backing up successfully to a Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials for months now.  I now need to restore the Surface Pro 3 to backup created last week.  However I cannot get  the Surface Pro3 to boot from the Recovery stick created by the Recovery Tools task.  I also can't get the Surface to boot from an external dvd drive.  The Surface seems to just ignore the External DVD drive.  Maybe there is a problem with it.  I will try it somewhere else. However the error I get trying to boot from the USB is the following.

Window Boot Manger

File \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD

Status: 0xc000000d

Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data.

How do I fix this issue and get the Surface Pro 3 to restore from backup?

When I created a new schedule and select four 2TB FC Disk as the back up target, the wizard fails with an error indicating there is not enough space.

I have a tad over TB to back up which means I cant back it up to a single volume.

How to I combine multiple 2TB volumes into a large backup pool?

Thank you

Windows Server Backup reboot server

Hi everybody,

I've a 2008 R2 guest inside a 2008 R2 Hyperv host.

Guest execute a scheduled backup to a network share.
Almost at backup end (I can see 60 GB written on the network share out of about 70 GB total) the virtual machine shutdown and reboot.

No error is recorded in event log (just "unexpected shutdown" (ID 6008) and "restart without clean shutdown" (ID 41))

Sometimes, instead of rebooting, the server sits there unreachable from the network, and I must force shutdown from the host.

When the server reboot everything is working fine, until the next backup...

  Corrado

BSOD caused by CsvFlt.sys when performing agentless backup through hyper-v host

Hello guys,

I have a 4 node Windows 2012 R2 server cluster, that is used for virtualization. I am running nearly 18 virtual machines.

We have 4 LUNs presented to the cluster: 3 CSV Volumes (2x1TB and 1x730GB) and 1 Quorum Disk (1GB).

We have implemented Acronis Backup Advanced for Hyper-V, but we have critical issues with the Backups. The top of the iceberg was a crash of all nodes on the 17.02.2014 just after 18:00 when the backup rotation starts. The evening backups are incremental and are set to one machine at a time (only production machines, that are around 10) and each machine has a 1 hour window.

We have read, that there was such problem with Windows 2012 and there was a fix, but it seems, the problem is not fixed in Windows 2012 R2 and there is no patch.

We are running IBM server, that have latest drivers and firmware. We also installed latest patches during the 14-15.02.2014 weekend.

We noticed that on 2 cluster, the events before the crash are start of VSS service and on the other 2 are start of VSS and then start of Acronis VSS. Additionally, we notice the following event 5120: "Cluster Shared Volume 'Volume1' ('Cluster Disk 1') has entered a paused state because of '(c000020c)'. All I/O will temporarily be queued until a path to the volume is reestablished." happening during backup rotation.

You may find files with the events before the crash, the bug check events, CSV disk events and a dump analysis on the following link.

It is crucial to understand, that when we run backup from within VMs, we do not receive and events of the type 5120 or any crashes. We have not tried to run through Windows Backup utility from hosts.

Please, suggest solutions.

Is a guy named Craig Zacker there? We are doing a class based on his Windows server 2012 book for class. We are trying to do an in place upgrade based on one of his chapters. I was told he worked in microsoft. If he does I was hoping to ask him about a problem I am having with an in place upgrade we are learning in his book.

RoboCopy command wiped out new directory on destination server

Hey all,

I am just wondering if anyone could shed some light on why when I ran a Robocopy command (see below)

that it removed a folder (which was not on the source) which was created on the destination drive.

robocopy \\serverold\C:\Data  E:\Data /ZB /MIR /W:5 /SEC

so example.... Serverold  copied files to Servernew (E:) with above command, however, a folder already residing on Servernew was deleted in the process.

thanks in advance.

Can't see previous versions with VSS enabled.

Hi,

I have a W2008R2 with VSS configured and running, I can see shadow copies till today saved in a volume D:, but when I go to see previous versions of a file or directory inside this volume, these previous versions don't appear since 17/11/2014. This date I changed the max value for number os shadow copies via registry editor, but I didn't check previous versions in files and directories later.

I've checked writers with vssadmin command, and all writers are ok. No errors in system logs neither. I've tried restarting VSS service with no result.

Is there any place I can check for solve this?

Hello- I have a Dell T620 running server 2012. The backup has been setup to go to a local usb drive. The backup intermittently fails on 1 of the volumes during the compression portion of the backup or will just fail out right with an error that says "There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.  We are currently running ESET for an AV. I have tried uninstalling it to see if it was causing the issue and it didn't solve it.

I did notice that there are usually event id 153 source disk The IO operation at logical block address 0x22 for Disk 4 was retried during the backup time. Not sure if that is normal or not.

Here is the error from the app log that occurs when the backup fails - The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎02‎-‎13T02:00:11.159719500Z' has failed with following error code '0x807800C5' (There was a failure in preparing the backup image of one of the volumes in the backup set.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

If I can provide any additional details please let me know.

rstrui.exe missing - Unable to create restore point windows server 8 Std & R2

Hi,

I need to create a system restore point on windows server 2008 Standard with SP2 installed. I want to do this prior to making some changes. I know how to create the restore point via the UI (User Interface) i.e. Run msconfig.exe >tools > system restore > launch run "create restore point". Following that process in the UI I get "the system can't find the file specified".

I have system protection turned on and can perform full volume backups with no problem. I just want to create a restore point.

I searched the C:\windows directory on the server for the file, I also expanded the search to C:\. I searched the install media (DVD) it wasn't there. On the media I searched forrstrui, thinking that I may need to expand the file from the install media. Has the process or executables changed in Windows server 8? If so, or not, can some one help me. Point me to either a url where I can download the .exe or let me know the new process. We have a volume license agreement, if that helps finding the file. I also looked for it on windows 2008 R2 with SP1 installed.

Thank you in advance,

Steve

Some backups complete successfully, others finish with warnings. Double-clicking the job in Windows Backup on successful jobs opens the logs. Doing the same on SOME jobs that failed display the following error: FX: {811FD892-5EB4-4E73-A147-F1E079E36C4E} Object reference not set to an instance of an object. System.NullReferenceException. We have ran SFC /Scannow, but the error continues. What is Microsoft's response to this?

Unable to modify backup

I'm trying to modify the time of a schedule backup in Windows Server Backup on a server running 2012 Essentials.

Normally I'm able to do this without any problem but when I try to do it here I get the error "The System cannot find the path specified." This is what happens whether using the GUI or wbadmin.

Any ideas as to how to fix this short of deleting the backup job and recreating it?

windows server backup server 2012 standard edition. error 0x800423f4 Source: Vss Event id: 8229

Good Morning,
I have a problem with windows server backup server 2012 standard edition.
I just scheduled a backup of the entire system on a dedicated disk sas.
The backup always end with the same outcome:

disk c: Completed
disk d: Completed
disk recovery: Completed
Virtual machine xxx: Completed
Virtual machine yyy: Completed
Host component: Completed
Bare Metal Recovery: Backup failed to complete
System State: backup CANCELED. "System were backup was canceled."

Even if I try to make up each one of the "bare metal recovery" or the "system state" I get the same error.

By controlling the Windows event log I find the following message:
Log Application name
Source: Vss
Event id: 8229
Level: warning

A VSS writer Has rejected an event with error 0x800423f4, The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error is Likely to reoccur.
Changes That the writer made to the writer components while handling the event will not be available to the requester.

Check the event log for related events from the application hosting the VSS writer.

    Process ID: 824

The server roles are: "Domain Controller" + "Exchange 2013" + "Hyper-V manager" with 32Gb RAM CPU 2.40GHz Intel Xeon E5-2609

I've done a lot of attempts to fix the problem type:
- Reboot the server several times
- In "diskpart" verify "AUTOMONT" is enable
- In the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ ProfileList no entry with a .bak to be deleted
- Reset the Vss with the following commands:

  C:
CD \ Windows \ System32
Net stop vss
Net stop swprv
regsvr32 ole32.dll
regsvr32 vss_ps.dll
Vssvc / Register
regsvr32 / i swprv.dll
regsvr32 / i eventcls.dll
regsvr32 es.dll
regsvr32 Stdprov.dll
regsvr32 vssui.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 msxml4.dll

I await your response.
Thank You

I had windows 10 and Windows server 2012 installed on my laptop. Windows 10 was installed on C drive and Windows Server 2012 on G drive, both OS were fully functional. I took image of Win 2012, and formatted G drive. I was able to restore the image successfully. When i boot and select Wino 2012 option it spins for 10 secs and kicks me back to WIndows 10. I am sure i have all the content i need on G drive. My question is how do i point Win2012 to point ot G drive and force it to boot from G drive. Sample commands are appreciated.
