I have an unused program marked "promotional sample not for resale". Am I correct in understanding that the program is a full functional program. Also, because it is marked "promotional" does it expire after a period of months?

Moving VS to another machine

Hi all,

I have a small set up of three virtual machines running in Serverv 2008 r2. I am creating a DR machine which I would like to be as exact of a clone as possible. Is it possible to export the virtuals to anothe server install that isd not part of the Domain? The servers are an Exchange Server, SQL and a Sharepoint.

Windows backup takes more space then used space on disk

Hi everyone,

I have an issue with Windows server backup on Hyper-V role.

I installed Hyper-V role on WS20012R2, and installed virtual machine on hyper-v with two fixed disks.

(VM is Exchange server 2010). First hdd is for system (80GB), and second hdd is for Exchange DB&LOGS (300GB).

Used space on system disk is 40.5GB, and on second disk 50.4. So, backup VM should take about 90GB.

I try to backup virtual machine named 'ExchangeSrv', but my backup takes 130GB, but when I run full backup from Exchange Server, my backup then takes 91GB.

Do you have any opinion about this issue, or some suggestion ?

Small One Time backup test in Windows Server Backup: still on "Scanning file system"

$

We are planning to implement a backup solution in our environment using Windows Server Backup.  Testing in our Test environment has been successful, but implementing a small-scale one-time test in our Production environment is not going as I expected.

Namely, as a test on our Production file server, I am using Windows Server Backup to back up a single folder with 6 files and is 512 KB in size (total).  I used the Backup Once Wizard to back up this folder to another drive as a test.  It has been running for almost 2 hours now on the "Scanning file system..." step.  The drive that contains the small folder with the 6 files I am attempting to back up has 3.08 TB total of data (several thousands of files and folders).

Why is the "Scanning file system" step taking so long?  Is it enumerating all files and folders in the drive, not just for the folder I want to back up?

When this "Scanning file system" step ends, will it take as long each subsequent time we try to do a "Backup Once" type of backup (using the GUI or using a Powershell cmdlet)? This was only a test, so I'm not going to set up any incremental backup based off of this small folder test.

Ultimately we are looking to do a weekly or monthly backup of a folder that contains about 1.5 TB in data total.  If we were to kick this task off for the first time, generally how long can I expect it to take?  Longer than 24 hours?  The length of time it takes may dictate whether we end up using this tool for our backup solution or switch to something else.

Tivoli Storage Manager Backup Client 6.4.0.200 failed on open file VSS copy on Windows 2012

I have been Tivoli Storage Manager Backup Client 6.4.0.200 on my Windows 2012 server. Backup has been running fine until I have applied patches to the Windows 2012 server. Now I have error with open files and VSS backup. Wondering if someone might have ran into similar issue? And if there is a solution. It stands to reason one of the patches is the culprit but I am not to able isolate which one or aware of a hot fix from MS to fix this issue - thanks!

Windows 2012 backup with group policy

Hi there,

Need some advice about running Windows 2K8R2 and 2012 servers backup with group policy.

I have 20 2K8R2 and 2012 servers needed to backup. I will use built-in Windows Server Backup to run the scheduled full server backup daily and save them to remote network share folder.

In my opinion, I think it's not necessary to create a group policy to run the job, as it has been scheduled by Windows Server Backup on each machines, and runs automatically to save to network share folder.

Does it make sense and correct? Or It has more benefits to run it by group policy. Please help.

My c:\windows\winsxs\filemaps folder is missing gone/deleted

When attempting to backup my system I was unable to as it said the VSS writer is missing.

After researching found that the reason it will not run is the Filemaps folder is missing from the winsxs folder

I also cannot run SFC/scannnow  not sure if it is because this folder is missing but did follow the steps in a blog to verify that the trusted installer information in the registry was correct.

My biggest question is can I restore just this folder from a backup that I have. It has been missing for about 3 weeks now. Will the restore of this folder from 3 to 4 weeks old break anything?

rstrui.exe Create a system restore point on windows server 8 standard

Hi,

Before making system changes, I need to create a system restore point on windows server 2008 Standard with SP2 installed.,  I found where to accomplish that via the UI, but the file isn't found when I search the C:\windows directory on the server.

The executable should be C:\windows\system32\rstrui.exe, unless it was changed for Server 2008. I have system protection turned on for the C: drive. This problem also exists on Windows server R2 enterprise with all updates applied.

I searched the install media (DVD) it wasn't there. I tried the full name (rstrui.exe) as well as truncated versions. I've searched on all of the applicable forums for rstrui.exe and "create system restore point".

Does someone know where I can get rstrui.exe for windows server 8.  It's not available on windows server R2 enterprise or essentials either. If there is an alternative method of creating restore points on windows server 8, please point me in the correct direction. Is it available in any of the variations of windows server 12. I have all of the updates installed when checking for how to create a system restore point or with searching for rstrui.exe. BTW, performing "system backups" or implementing"previous versions" functionality work just fine.

Thank you in advance,

Steve

Questions related to windows server backup/restore

Hi All,

I have few questions related to Windows server system state backup. My first question is "I have taken a system state backup using Windows server backup manager", My server crashed and replaced with a new HDD. I can restore the system state image backup which was taken. Question is, Will it restore all the applications installed on the server (including third party applications)? As system state backup never mentioned anywhere that it carries the applications installed and can be restored, so i got a doubt, if there are any limitations with restoring applications, please let me know....

Question 2 : Will the same concept or applications restoring including my entire computer c drive as it is works if i restore it on dissimilar hardware ?

Thanks in advance....

VSS Writer errors backing up VM guests on Server 2012 R2

$

Hello,

I'm trying to setup backup on newly setup 2012 R2 server. I have Linux and Windows guests. Windows guest back up fine, sometime I do get errors though. With Linux guests (CentOS7, latest build) - it doesn't work I get error:

0x800423f4, The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error is likely to reoccur.
Operation: PrepareForSnapshot Event Context: Execution Context: Writer Writer Class Id: {66841cd4-6ded-4f4b-8f17-fd23f8ddc3de} Writer Name: Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer Writer Instance ID: {ad8490d5-51b1-4fa5-8142-8aa3c2fd3bdd} Command Line: C:\Windows\system32\vmms.exe Process ID: 1408

I read somewhere it might be because of integration tool version mismatch? Yes, I do get this warning in logs:

A storage device in 'ASTERISK' loaded but has a different version from the server.  Server version 6.0  Client version 5.1 (Virtual machine ID 660823D6-72FF-4110-81E9-BFD572C54490). The device will work, but this is an unsupported configuration. This means that technical support will not be provided until this problem is resolved. To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu.

But, after research on this error - I found that it's "OK" and should be fine.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2956569/en-us?wa=wsignin1.0

Seems like a catch 22. How do I backup Linux Guests?

Unable to backup System State on a 2008 R2 Server

Have a 2008 R2 SP1 Server, patched to the current state, and we can not perform a system state / BMR backup. The backup starts, VSS creation always succeeds, but between 30 and 80% (it's never at the same point) the backup fails with event 5, error 2147943567. The eventlog message says the the problem should be in the "Details message":

I can not see the reason for the failure in the eventlog message above.

In Windows Server Backup, the logged error message is "a device is not connected".

The server is running on VMware and has just one virtual hard disk (drive C:) All other servers running on the same VMware plattform don't have this problem. Also, there are no warnings or errors in the system and application eventlog of the affected server. Have also tried to run a backup with completely disabled Antivirus scanner, but the backup stops with the same error.

What can we do? Thank you all in advance for any advice.

System State/BMR Backup with DPM 2012 R2 fails on our domain controllers.

Hi,

We use System Center DPM 2012 R2 (running on server 2008 r2 sp1) to backup the system state/bmr of our domain controllers (running Server 2012 R2). Since the end of March the backups fail with the following error message:

DPM cannot create a backup because Windows Server Backup (WSB) on the protected computer encountered an error (WSB Event ID: 517, WSB Error Code:  0x11ECE20). (ID 30229 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990ED0)

When I check the windows backup logs on the domain controller (c:\windows\logs\windowsserverbackup\) there are three possible error messages:

"Backup of volume C: has failed. An unexpected network error occurred" or "Backup of volume C: has failed. Windows Backup encountered an error when accessing the remote shared folder. Please retry the operation after making sure that the remote shared folder is available and accessible" or "Backup of volume C: has failed. The parameter is incorrect".

When I follow the backup in Windows Server Backup the error occurs at the end of the backup process when the Description shows "Backup in progress..."

When I remove everything in DPM (Stop protection of member -> Delete replica on disk) and recreate everything in DPM the backup will complete succesfully but only the first time.

Any help appreciated.

DJITS.

Event 51 and 27 during Windows Server Backup

Hello Everybody,

I have a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 and it has 3 Hyper-V VMs running constantly. Whenever Windows Server Backup starts I get the following errors (51 and 27) in the event viewer and I'm wondering if there is anything I can do to fix the issues? My backup completes as expected and the errors do not seem to effect it at all but the events get logged every single time the backup runs.

Log Name:      System
Source:        volsnap
Event ID:      27
The shadow copies of volume \\?\Volume{96320696-4061-11e0-8f56-842b2b61d4be} were aborted during detection because a critical control file could not be opened.

Log Name:      System
Source:        Disk
Event ID:      51
Description:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk3\DR14 during a paging operation.

For event 51 specifically I would like to note that there is no Harddisk3 on the system and there never has been. I have double checked disk management multiple times to be sure. I also tried changing the external drive (backup destination) to a brand new one and the error persists.

If anybody can shed any light on what's going on with these errors I would appreciate it. They don't seem to be effecting the server at all and backups are still successfully completing every night so it doesn't seem like anything major, I'd just like to address the events if possible.
