Trying to restore backup...

Hi There,

I'm trying to restore a failed backup! The backup shows the following summary after completion:

C Drive (Backup Completed)

System State (Backup Completed)

E Drive (138gb of 202gb) Backed up... (How can I restore the data that has been backed up?!)

Thanks!

Ben

WBADMIN -allcritical fails

I've a strange situation on a physical Windows Server 2008 R2 Server. It hosts Citrix 6.5 (uses SQL 2008 back end), Terminal Services Licensing (for citrix) and IIS for an application that's hosted. Backups in DPM 2012 R2 started failing so I've been troubleshooting using wbadmin on the server affected and noticed the following: If I run wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:\\Backup01\recover\backuptest -allcritical it fails with this error message:

A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation failed. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information.
ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has occurred: (0x800423f4)
The writer experienced a non-transient error.  If the backup process is retried, the error is likely to reoccur.

The event log shows these four errors:

Event 521, Backup

Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

The following VSS Writers also go into a [7] failed state/Timed Out:

  • IIS Metabase Writer
  • WMI Writer
  • IIS Config Writer
  • TermServLicensing
  • SqlServerWriter
  • System Writer

If I restart all of the services associated with these writers, the state returns to [1] stable until a BMR backup runs again. I can runwbadmin start backup -BackupTarget:\\Backup01\recover\backuptest -include:c:or wbadmin start backup -BackupTarget:\\Backup01\recover\backuptest -include:\\?\Volume{ab7be5ee-33c9-11e4-adf9-806e6f6e6963}and it completes successfully.

If I run wbadmin start backup -BackupTarget:\\Backup01\recover\backuptest -include:C:,\\?\Volume{ab7be5ee-33c9-11e4-adf9-806e6f6e6963}it fails with the same error message as above. The \\?\... drive is a 100MB System Reserved partition that is Active. C: holds the operating system.

What I've tried so far:

  • Set VSS shadowstorage to unbounded for both partitions
  • Installed all windows/SQL updates
  • Re-registered the VSS writer DLLs
cd /d %windir%\system32
net stop vss
net stop swprv
regsvr32 /s ole32.dll
regsvr32 /s oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 /s vss_ps.dll
vssvc /register
regsvr32 /s /i swprv.dll

regsvr32 /s es.dll
regsvr32 /s stdprov.dll
regsvr32 /s vssui.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml4.dll
vssvc /register
net start swprv
net start vss

  • Confirmed automount was enabled in Dispart.
  • Restarted the server
  • Being a production server, the only thing I haven't tried is to run a BMR with the SQL service stopped.

What do I try next short of rebuilding this thing?

Hi,

I have the problem that after upgrade one guest VM from Windows 8.1 pro to Windows 10 Pro the VSS Shadow Copy is not working anymore. The Windows Server is running Windows Server 2012r2. When using Windows Server Backup 2012 there is always the errow below.

vssadmin list writers looks fine on both the server and the guest vm.

ANy ideas on the error?

Thanks

josef

Unable to backup Windows 2008 server.

I have recently build 3 new domain controllers based on Windows 2008 to do some validation of our infrastructure upgrade and possible backup fallback scenarios.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get a full backup with system state.

First I tried backing those servers with Windows 2012R2 based Data Protection Server.

For system state backup I kept getting "Replica Inconsistent"

After some troubleshooting it was recommended to try doing full backup on the actual server directly and see if that work and that fail before process starts with " A volume Shadow Copy Service Operation failed with error code 2155348129"

I can't seem to find anything in logs that would point out what particular component actually causing backup to fail.

All 3 machine are Hyper-V vm's .

Searched around and have seen others with this issue but no real solutions.

I have a 14TB Deduplicated volume that loses its vss about once a month. I just lost this lasts night and have seen some interesting stuff.

First the error

The shadow copies of volume E: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.

Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.

PS C:\Windows\system32> vssadmin list shadowstorage /for=e:

vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool(C) Copyright 2001-2012 Microsoft Corp.Shadow Copy Storage association

Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 507 MB (0%)

Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 3.14 GB (0%)

Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: 1.40 TB (9%)

If i look at previous versions i only show the snapshot from this morning at 7:00 AM

However if i type vssadmin list shadows. it shows 30+ Contents of shadow copy set ID.

I am starting to run low on space but i still have over 20% free and over 3.1TB of space.

Any ideas here?

wbadmin wbadmin delete systemstatebackup returns no system state backups were found

I have server 2012 R2 running as a VM under Hyper-V. I can run a system state backup to D: drive which is internal drive on the VM. When I run wbadmin get version out put looks normal showing a number of backups.  When I run wbadmin delete systemstatebackup -backuptarget:D: -keepversions:1 or variations such as wbadmin delete systemstatebackup -keepversions:1 or wbadmin delete systemstatebackup -backuptarget:D -keepversions:1 it gives the following:

Enumerating system state backups...
ERROR - No system state backups were found.
This command can be used to delete backups that only contain the system state.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thank you

Symantec Netbakup install failed

I need to upgrade a Symantec Netbackup client to version 7.6.1.2 on more than 30 Windows 2008R2 Enterprise Servers. Most of them were successful but 4 servers returned error. I have asked Symantec support for help. After they checked everything and the log files, they saild that there were something wrong whith the MSI file and told us to seek Micorosft support. What I am thinking is if the MSI file corrupted, none of the upgrade would be success. I'm stuck in between Symantec and Microsoft. Is there any way to prove the MSI is ok?

SSH/SCP to Windows Server 2008R2 From UNIX/AIX

Hi,

I am not able to push data from UNIX/AIX system to Windows Server.

The error i get in UNIX is port 22 timed out.

The problem is when i give the following command [netstat -an | findstr "LISTENING"] ido not see port 22 LISTENING.

TCP    0.0.0.0:80             0.0.0.0:0              LISTENING
TCP    0.0.0.0:135            0.0.0.0:0              LISTENING
TCP    0.0.0.0:445            0.0.0.0:0              LISTENING

In the firewall rule port 22 is open.

I am using WinSCP client to Test. I have no issues push and pulling data from Windows Server to UNIX.

I have also installed PuTTY. Again no issues connecting to UNIX.

With-in UNIX i can scp to other UNIX Boxes. Why can't i SCP over SSH from UNIX to Windows?

How to backup Remote Server using Windows Server Backup 2012?

Dear Windows Expert,

I have a backup server running Windows server 2012 with the Windows Server Backup installed. I would like to do a remote backup of my Hyper V Server Running Windows Server 2008 R2. Is it possible? As we know that Windows Server backup on 2008 Windows is not able to backup Hyper V, that's why I am planning to use Windows Server Backup 2012 running on the other server.

Thanks.

Regards,

An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 during a paging operation.

The server is running 2008 R2, standard edition (core). Setup as a host with 4 VM's running on it. This error seams to coincide with a backup job starting on two VM's running on this server. Once this starts the VM’s become unresponsive and I cant access this server (acting as a host). Forced reboot fixes the problem. Any ideas?

Backup running too slow

Hi,

I've scheduled system state backup on Windows server 2008 R2 standard and it's running daily basis..

Backup is scheduled on domain controller and the backup stored on network path.

All of sudden backup is running very slowly. It's taking almost 5 Days to finish a single backup.

When I check the event viewer I found the following warning message

Replaced Hard Drives in HP Proliant 160, now no one can login to the server

Forgive me if this is posted in the wrong location, this is my first post. I rarely have to turn to others to find a solution to a problem but this is something I have not been able to solve.

I have an HP Proliant 160 (G2) that had 4 aging 1tb drives in raid 1+0 (2tb) I decided to upgrade them to 4x 4TB drives to increase storage space and access speed. I usedWindows Server backup, backed up to an external USB 2tb drive using the bare metal backup option, booted to the Windows 2008 R2 setup disk, and ran the "repair your computer" and was able to finally successfully restore the backup to the new drives. I had issues with the restore process, sadly our drive was setup as a basic disk and it could not be converted to dynamic since it was a boot volume. But at this point I just need the server back online. The restore process finished (took 12 hours) and it restarted itself. All appeared to be restored perfectly but now no one can login to the server and I have not the faintest as to why. The server was offline for maybe 24 hours in total.

The typical error message shown to desktops who were connected to our child domain is "There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request". We can ping the domain xxxx.xxxx.net and get responses.

When I attempt to join the domain from a computer that is not currently attached I am getting the below error output. I'm considering putting in the old drives but in order to do that, I will need to reconfigure the HP 212 raid controller to see those drives, and I am afraid that if I remake the configuration in the raid array that it will simply blank the drives and wipe the old data right off there when the raid configuration is saved. Just hooking them back up results in a failure to boot, the server is configured for the new drives now.
