windows server backup server 2012 standard edition. error 0x800423f4 Source: Vss Event id: 8229

Good Morning,
I have a problem with windows server backup server 2012 standard edition.
I just scheduled a backup of the entire system on a dedicated disk sas.
The backup always end with the same outcome:

disk c: Completed
disk d: Completed
disk recovery: Completed
Virtual machine xxx: Completed
Virtual machine yyy: Completed
Host component: Completed
Bare Metal Recovery: Backup failed to complete
System State: backup CANCELED. "System were backup was canceled."

Even if I try to make up each one of the "bare metal recovery" or the "system state" I get the same error.

By controlling the Windows event log I find the following message:
Log Application name
Source: Vss
Event id: 8229

A VSS writer Has rejected an event with error 0x800423f4, The writer experienced a non-transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error is Likely to reoccur.

The server roles are: "Domain Controller" + "Exchange 2013" + "Hyper-V manager" with 32Gb RAM CPU 2.40GHz Intel Xeon E5-2609

I've done a lot of attempts to fix the problem type:
- Reboot the server several times
- In "diskpart" verify "AUTOMONT" is enable
- In the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ ProfileList no entry with a .bak to be deleted
- Reset the Vss with the following commands:

Windows server 2008 backup fails

Hi,

I'm trying to run a custom backup on my old Win Server 2008, I want to replace the C:\ hard drive.  I run the backup and select "Different Options" then "Custom" and then I select "Bare Metal" and it picks:

Bare Metal Recovery

System State

System Reserved

and Local Disk C:

I have a second drive in there that I'll reattach once I get a new C:\ Drive in there.

The backup runs but it ends with two errors in the items list:

System Reserved         shows  Completed.

C:                                 shows  Backup completed with warnings.

Bare metal recovery     shows  Backup failed to complete.

System state                shows  Completed.

In the errors tab it says:  4096 bytes could not be read due to the presence of bad clusters on your hard disk,

and so have not been backed up.  Run CHKDSK /R on the hard disk, and then retry the backup.

Whats the best or recommended way to run the CHKDSK /R ?   Just open CMD and run the command and have

it scan on the next reboot?   I can't lose the drive till I get decent backup ......  I have the C:\ contents but it's also

a backup DC in my office.

Cheers'

Restore Point

We have Windows 2003&2008R2 Servers in our environment. Every time we patch our servers, we run into some issue or the other. Some times uninstalling patches does not help and we need to recover from a backup.  We have seen that it takes a very long time to restore them from backup, there by causing huge application down times.

Is there a way we can circumvent this problem? Some thing like a recover point which can help roll back quickly to a previous state.

We have a mix of physical and virtual servers. Taking snapshots on hundreds of servers is not an option due to capacity constraints.

Pls advise.

2012 server essentials R2 multiple usb backup disks for offsite storage

I am setting up a replacement server and looking for a MS procedure to be able to swap out disks either daily or weekly to allow for offsite storage. I would like to be able to do this by simply unplugging one drive and plugging the other one in.

The dashboard does not appear to keep the first drive that I added as a backup device if it is not connected.

It appears that when I change disks, I have to go through the setup routine again and if there is data on the disk, it can be erased or kept. If the data is kept, does it add to the data or start over again?

I did read an article indicating that both backup devices need to be connected when you do the setup, unfortunately I left my second usb3 cable at work so I can not test that tonight.

Am I better off to use software that comes with the drive (WD My book).

I am also trying to do a restore of data from a 2011 essentials server and when I plug the drive in, I am prompted to  setup the drive and am a bit nervous that this setup might attack the data on the backup that I brought home.

On another issue with the "MY Book", when I did the setup of one drive on 2012, the drive was recognized and formatted however when I tried the same on 2011, the drive would not work as it seemed like the format did not happen. Brought the drive home and it formatted and is operating on 2012. Will see what happens when I take it back to work tomorrow.

As I am stumbling around, any advice should be concise as I get confused easily.

Hyper-V VM backup is creating AVHD file

$

I am backing up one of my virtual machines that's running on Hyper-V 2008 R2.  I am using Windows Backup software.  It does an incremental backup of the entire VM every night.  When I look at the backup location, it is creating two large files.  One is a VHD file and the other is a AVHD file.  Both are about 250 GB each.  I don't have any snapshots.  The VM itself has a 185 GB VHD file and no AVHD file.  Why is it creating an AVHD file as part of the backup?  What can I do to remove it?

Benefits of Veeam Backup for Hyper-V

Hi every one!

Who has experience in using Veeam backup?

I've read their datacheet and I actuall stuck.

We have two hypervizors and one old, slow file server. I'm thinking about failover and backups for Hypervizors, and read about Veeam .

Most features that they introduce are already in Hyper-V, like Backups on-the-fly, File Explorer, thus it can't be atomated like Hyper-V backups via powershell.

I can't find out what's the purpose of using Veeam Backup, can anyone help?

Any open source tool available to take the backup of files & folder in the windows server 2008.

Hi Support,

We are using Windows Server 2008.We are using this server for active directory to share the files and folders.

We want to take the backup of all the files and folders. The backup file size contains more than 750 GB.

Manually taking the data of 750 GB Daily is impossible.

Is there any open source tool available to take the backup of entire 750 GB Data automatically.

We are already having 3TB Seagate backup plus drive.Daily we are manually copying the data from the server to seagate external backup plus drive.

We are looking for a open source tool to take the backup of server data.

Please let me know how to take the backup of entire data in the server.

Your support is highly appreciated.

Unable to modify backup

I'm trying to modify the time of a schedule backup in Windows Server Backup on a server running 2012 Essentials.

Normally I'm able to do this without any problem but when I try to do it here I get the error "The System cannot find the path specified." This is what happens whether using the GUI or wbadmin.

Any ideas as to how to fix this short of deleting the backup job and recreating it?

Hello,

I see on several 2012R2 servers between 5 - 8 warning events ID 51 "An error was detected on device \Harddisk1\DRxyz during a paging operation" (source: disk, protocoll name: system) in the beginning of a backup operation with Windows Server Backup. The backup destination is a NAS. Should we do something about these warnings?

Hyper-V Backup issue

Hi,

We are using Dell Server and Installed Windows Server 2012 , Hyper-V role on it.

We have created multiple virutal server inside it for Database Server , Exchange Server , IIS etc.

Now , When we are trying to take a backup using Windows Server Backup Utility it gives error.

When we are trying to backup a full bare metal recovery backup it fails with error " there is no sufficient space available on remote and local server " , Although , we do have a enough space available on our Synology NAS Backup device as well as on local server.

When we try to take only system state or c drive backup it works..so what could be the issue.

Thanks,

Hello-

Running Windows Home Server 2011, recently had an operating disk failure, restored successfully, everything is working OK except when I do a full metal backup of the server I get a failed backup and the string of error logs as below.  I can do scheduled backups of the server folders containing data so long as I do not include the C drive in any way.  Prior to running the backup I have performed vssadmin list writers and all is functioning normally.  After running backup I get the below output.  I have tried to run all of the suggested fixes, none seem to have any impact on solving this issue.  After running the backup and failing, it seems impossible to get the vss writers to go back to normal until a re-boot.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me nuts.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

As a student i want to ask a question about server 2008 r2,

i have built a dc (abc.com) and joint machines to dc, now all are members of dc,

suddenly dc crushed or hard disk got bad, unfortunately couldn't make backup of anything.

now i re-installed dc server with same name same IP Address and same configuration,

all machines are (abc.com) now will machine synchronize automatically with dc or i have to join domain again?

and what about backup if i have system state backup , can i deploy to new installed server and all configuration will get the same as before?

i am not good in English hope you understand my question.
