I work in an environment where we back up lots of servers running Server 2008 and 2012 (various editions). Our backup solution employs the VSS system writer, and we also run a file-level backup with very few exclusions specified; we only exclude the Recycle Bin and temporary Internet files. The file level backup attempts to back up all contents of %windir\system32. Does this cause needless overlap, as the VSS system writer should already be backing up at least some contents within that folder? If so, how can I determine what can specifically be excluded from our file system backups and instead rely on the VSS system writer backups?
