Any way to throttle disk IO of Windows Server Backup

Windows Server Backup (on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials with all latest updates) still maxes our disk IO during backup. Have 2x3Tb (as a Storage Space) SATA2 and 1x4Tb (split into 3 partitions) SATA3 being backed up to a 6Tb SATA3 disk. During backup, the media services are not accessible, and logon via remote terminal is so slow as to often timeout. File shares seem just about usable, at least sometimes.

Given the size of the backup, they typically take around 10 hours - making scheduling of these alongside the daily client backups as well as normal use of the server almost impossible! As the Windows Server Essentials Dashboard has very limited capability for scheduling backups (fixed at daily, and same items every day) this becomes extremely limited...

Is there a way to throttle the disk IO of the backup job - I have tried a number of utilities to set the IO priority to Low, but this effectively stops the backup :-(

If not, what is the best way to make a suggestion to Microsoft that the capability to limit disk IO needs to be added tothe Windows Server Backup tool (in a way that works with the Windows Essentials front-end).... and ideally, the Windows Server Essentials options for server backup should allow more flexible scheduling supporting more than one job and allowing frequency other than daily so that you could have e.g. weekly to backup the client backups, daily to backup shared folders and Windows 8.x history files...
