WBAdmin, empty logs and unexplained failure

Hi Folks,

I am trying, and failing, I might add, to backup a Windows Server 2008r2 to an SMB NAS.  The biggest problem is that WBAdmin produces log files that are empty so I can't tell what is really happening.  No, that's not really true, is it  -- the biggest problem is that the backup is not completing successfully and I have to look at the logs which are empty.  The empty logs are just another symptom of an epic failure to either succeed or describe the reason for failure.  I am hoping I can get some advice.

I tried a minimum backup for diagnostic purposes -- one file.

C:\> WBAdmin Start backup -vssFull -quiet -backupTarget:"\\nas1.tclc.org\Public\backup"
-include:"C:\Test\Junk\Keep\Keep 1.txt"

WBAdmin responded:

wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool (C) Copyright 2004 Microsoft Corp.

    <snip>

The backup of volume Local Disk(C:) to \\nas1.tclc.org\Public\backup is starting...
The backup of volume Local Disk(C:) could not be completed. Error: The version does not support this version of the file format.
The backup operation stopped before completing.
Summary of the backup operation:
------------------

The backup operation stopped before completing.
Log of files successfully backed up:
C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup-03-09-2012_13-06-11.log

Log of files for which backup failed:
C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup\Backup_Error-03-09-2012_13-06-11.log

None of the source volumes were backed up.

The above highlighted log files are empty.  What does "Error: The version does not support this version of the file format." mean?

The event log reports:

Log Name:      Application
Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Backup
Event ID:      517
User:          SYSTEM
Description:
The backup operation that started at '?2012?-?09?-?03T19:50:47.861369400Z' has failed with following error code '2155348301' (There was a failure in updating the backup for deleted items.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Please notice the error:"There was a failure in updating the backup for deleted items".  Who know what this means?

I also tried a full disk backup. Astonishingly, this seems to work.  I STILL get empty logs as indicated above and I really want to see these loges before I believe in these backups.  And, backup should always work, even for a single file.

C:\DfsRoots\Users\Home\sa\Backup Scripts>WBAdmin Start backup -allCritical -systemState -vssFull -quiet -backupTarget:"\\nas1.tclc.org\Public\backup" -include:C: -exclude:T:

Thanks for the help,

Chris.
