Hi,
I have a SBS 2011 running Windows Server Backup every night. It has a RAID disk where two disks failed a week ago. Since the probability that two disks fails at the same time should be close to zero I suspected the RAID-5 controller. So a replacement was ordered and installed on June 7. And then the machine rebooted, but I could see that one disk was still gone. I also noticed that the last backup was taken July 1 which was the day before the crash. But after some hour another disk stopped working which caused the entire server to die.
I got new disks and restored the server from an image backup I had from May 1, and it starts ok. But when I start Windows Server Backup it doesn't show any backups after May 1 even thou I know it has been running every night. Ok, so I need to recover the Backup Catalog from my backup disk
But if I try to run 'wbadmin restore catalog -backupTarget:X' then it says
"ERROR - The specified backup location could not be found or is not a supported backup storage location"
When I then look at the backup disk I can see that the there is catalog \WindowsImageBackup\<ComputerName>\"2015-07-07 114042". It therefore seems like Windows Server Backup for some reason started on July 7 when the machine started after RAID controller replacement, but then the catalog was crashed when the disk died.
The consequence of this is that if a disk failure occurs causing Windows Server to die abnormally while Windows Server Backup is running, then this may result in a corrupted catalog on the Windows Server backup disk meaning that all backups are lost!!
The backup disk should contain backups up to July 1. Is there some way to fix the corrupted catalog on the backup disk?
