Error-Backup Services not running- but they are

I am using Server Essentials on a 2012R2 server.  This is a single server network.  Backup services were up and running for a couple of years, but suddenly they aren't functioning.  I can launch the backup using a script and task scheduler, but using server essentials I can't get it to finish using the setup action.  When I launch the setup wizard from the link in the server essentials dashboard the following is returned.

"Cannot setup server backup"

"Make sure that all backup services are running, and then try again.  If the problem exists, review the system alerts for related information."

Using services.msc I can see the backup service running.  VSS service was set to manual so I started it manually and reran the wizard and received the same error message.

Are there other services  I should check?

I looked in the event viewer but don't see any errors related to backup services.  I do see that server essentials had unexpectedly terminated.  When I came into today to work on this I noticed that server essential service was not running, so I started it.

What else can I check or do?

I shutdown and restarted the server.  On the restart the windows server essential management service terminated unexpectedly.  But from the event viewer (is there a better place to look for specifics on the error?) I can't tell why.  Is that keeping the backup server setup wizard from starting?
