WBAdmin
Hi Folks,
Recently I have tried to move Windows Server 2008R2 from a Dell Dimension C521 to a Dell Optiplex 960, by the technique of a bare-metal restore of a backup of the C521 to the blank disk on the 960. This creates a disk in the 960 which is ostensibly an identical copy of the disk in the C521.
The restore was successful, but yielded a non-functioning system. Specifically, the 960 boots to where the pulsating Windows Flag logo displays, which is normally followed by narration on the screen of the steps Windows Server 2008R2 is taking to start services,
but in this case, I don't get that far; I only see the mouse cursor on the screen and that is persistent for at least half an hour, after which time I aborted the experiment. This disk behaves the same way in either a Dimension C521 box or an Optiplex 960,
so it doesn't seem to be related to the processor.
So, my problem is to determine why a re-imaged disk behaves the way mine does and if there is a technique to successfully boot it. What diagnostics and repair tools are available?
Thanks for the help,
Chris.
Server 2012 R2, 2 node cluster VSS is failing on one node
I have found fixes for Server 2008 and 2008 R2 but have yet to find a resolution
for Server 2012 R2. I have worked with EMC to try a resolve with no
luck. The issue is the e:\ volume is on the other node in the cluster but
is looking at this path due to a SAP service that installed to this
cluster volume location on this node "e:\usr\sap\trn\ascs01\exe\sapstartsrv.exe".
Below is the VSS event id, vssadmin list writers, and diskshadow output for
further information.

Windows 2008R2 x64 System Recovery on NEC Express 5800 R120e-2M
Hello,
I need to perform a complete system recovery test on our UAT servers.
Current Configurations : NEC EXpress 5800 R120e-2M
Disk Drives : 3 disks ( C:, D: and Y drive )
I tried yesterday but did not succeed.
Steps.
I made a full system backup image on drive Y: It was successful.
Boot the system using Windows 2008R2 bootable CD and select Recover System option.
Problems:
1. Windows could not recognize the disks firstly then I checked the NEC Express 5800 manual and found that I need to load the RAID drivers when Windows asks for the Load Drivers. Drivers were load successfully. It is hardware RAID implemented in the server.
Luckily, Windows detects the current installed operating system but the problem was that,
Windows detects the C: as H: when it displayed the list of installed operating.I tried next but Windows could not detect the backup image and finally gave up.
I saw that all the disks volumes changed as follows
C : drive became H:
D : drive became N:
Y : drive became L:
I am not able to understand this behavior. Appreciate if someone can please provide some insight/information for above problem.
I am stuck at this point and can not test the Windows Full System Recovery on UAT before attempting it on our Production and DR environment.
Finally I booted the server as normal and I can see C,D and Y: drives.
Thanks,
Praveen
Concurrent or backup server - advice needed
Hello,
We have a small business and want to implement a backup server. We have identical hardware on the secondary
server. So there is the primary server. There is a second machine which is to become the main server should something
happen to it.
First of all, I would like to make an identical copy of the OS or at least the settings from the first server. I realize that both cannot be the same and connected online at the same time. There would be IP and machine name conflicts.
Second, I want to implement a system where this secondary backup server is kept up to date ideally in real time, or at worse case, updating it at a particular time each day, say 8:00pm. These servers are in 2 separate physical locations in a building.
Please give me some options on how I would do accomplish these tasks.
Thanks so much.

How to delete old backups on Windows 2012 Server Backup
Hi there
We have 2 Windows Server 2012 physical machine and these machine has cross synchronization in Hyper-V and also each machine has USB dedicated backup device attached to this machine. On the USB dedicated backup device, we ran a Windows Server Backup (Local backup) run once a day and we only select the VMs and Host Component for backing up and use an option for "Backup to harddisk that is dedicated for backups (recommended).
Now we have a warning saying that the space for USB backup device is only 5% left and in this device we have 273 copies of backups (capacity 1863 GB and used space 1767 GB), so my question are:
1. Does this Windows backup will overwrite the old one by any chance automatically? Or it will throw an error if it's full?
2. If it's throwing an error, how do we deleted the old backups?
We prefer to have first option recycling/deleting the old one automatically. Option (2), we can't really see the contain of the disk .. not sure how we are going to delete old backups. Alternative, we are thinking to supply another brand new USB disk ... is that the best option?
Waiting for your feedback.
Thanks
Isadewa
Windows 2008R2 System State backup problem
Windows Server 2008 R2 Backup - Slow backup to iSCSI Target on a NAS
Looks like the backup job duration is the same when running backup for the first time and every subsequent time. I thought Win2008R2 does incremental backup when destination is a iSCSI target. I am backing up a Hyper-V server with bunch of VMs, and the backup duration is about 6 hours to a iSCSI target running on a Gigabit connection and this makes me think that there is no incremental backup being done.
Someone please help me understand why this is happening.
Thanks,
Shuja
Attempting to restore from a backup 2012R2 Essentials
I have a 2012R2 Essentials machine I used to replace our 2008R2 Home Server some years ago. I attempted to install an A/V and it crashed and locked everything up. (Thanks Symantec) I've tried every which way I know to restore and learned a lot about wbadmin. (as a side note, deduplication can't be read on a windows 10 machine. You must have another server with the feature turned on. Otherwise, prepare for the long wait while the drive "rehydrates" start dedupjob...I digress)
At the moment, I've copied the HDD to a vhd as to not loose the original. I've installed a fresh copy of the essentials server and I'm attempting to restore. I see 5+ copies in Windows Server Backup. I select the date and time, the two volumes I want restored and the location on the exactly sized vhd to put them. When I hit restore I get "Windows Backup cannot find a shadow copy of the backup set on the storage location."
The backup drive was new, never touched when I began using it for backups. It has sat on the server for at least a year now with no changes. When attempting to bare metal restore, the backups can't be found. Wbadmin can't find the versions until I wbadmin restore catalog -backuptarget:d: Someone please help. I stand to possibly lose a decade of family pictures and home movies without restoration. This was the backup for the backup as it has been reliable for years...

VSS Writer Issues
Hi,
I've got a newly built Windows Server 2012 R2 box out in the field. We're using a 3rd party backup solution (Arcserve Backup Manager) which leverages VSS to take a snapshot during the first phase of the backup. We've seen an issue with this effectively right
from the start. During the first full backup, Backup Manager would get stuck on "Taking snapshot". I reached out to N-Able, and they gave me a few things to try which included restarting the Volume Shadow Copy service (which wouldn't stop) and running
the command "vssadmin list writers" - which wouldn't display a result - to check for writer errors. After a reboot, the command line displayed the list of VSS writers - all of which had no errors - and the first full backup completed successfully.
When the second backup/first incremental backup started, it displayed the same symptoms again; I couldn't list VSS writers, and the backup was getting stuck at "Taking Snapshot". After another reboot, the backup completed successfully again.
We're at the point now where it seems to be a Microsoft issue, more than an Arcserve issue. I added the Windows Server Backup feature (before the first full backup) to try and secure a backup at least, but that's never worked. I've now been advised to remove
the Windows Server Backup feature in case there's a possible conflict, but for some reason it's now greyed-out and I can't remove it.
Obviously it's not viable to reboot the server every day for the sake of securing a backup. Has anybody seen this type of behavior from VSS, and perhaps have a solution or workaround for me please?
I appreciate your help
