BMR on Windows Server 2012R2 to ALMOST identical HW (Driver issue)

OK, we all know that BMR is really intended for restore on identical HW.  For reasons that some of you may know, I need to migrate from a Dell server with a PERC S130 to the same HW but using a real RAID card, say a PERC H330.  Here's what I tried:

a) Did a BMR backup to an external drive

b) Removed the old drives and old RAID controller

c) Inserted brand spanking new drives and the new RAID controller

d) Restored

Restore went well, but got the proverbial blue screen of death.  I realized that there is probably a driver issue at hand, but not certain as the restore proceeded -- that is, the restore wrote onto the new disk array.

In any case, I have two ideas in my head:

a) Try putting the NEW RAID controller in the box without any drives connected to it while running on the old RAID.  Hopefully Windows will detect new HW and either load a driver or ask to have a driver loaded (which I have).  After that, do the BMR backup, remove the old RAID, swap in the new RAID and drives and hopefully, the restore image will have the right drivers.

b) Just install the driver for the new RAID while running on the old RAID (not bothering with actually installing the HW), then doing the BMR backup, and so forth.

Before blowing another few hours on this, any words of wisdom?

Hello,

here is a scenario:

We have DPM server in our domain which is protecting dozen of machines. Now we are about to implement Microsoft Azure Backup Server but when I try to add server to protect in MABS Im getting an error saying that dpm agent can only point to one dpm server.

Now Im wondering if there will be any damage if I just make unistall from dpm, remove the agent and install it on MABS.

Did anyone have similar scenario, and how did you manage it?

Why do I Need Shadow Copies of my Backup Volume?

I am backing up to a mounted iSCSI drive. The drive is dedicated to server backups My question is why do I need to have ANY space devoted to shadow copies on this volume? Making shadow copies of the backups means I'm making shadow copies of the shadow copies on the server drives, doesn't it? What purpose does this serve, and can I disable this behavior?

Bare metal/system state backup: Can it restore programs and applications?

$

All,

Am very new to backups in general and specifically Windows Server backups, I am interested in backing up a Windows 2012 R2 and Windows 2008 R2 terminal server.

These servers have a bunch of applications and programs like Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Microsoft Office, and various other programs.

I am wondering if worst case scenario, I have to rebuild the server, that if I have a bare metal backup with system state, system reserved, and local disk all backed up, that I can restore those programs and settings just to how they were before. Is it like taking an image of a computer? Or what can I expect from this.

Can I test out the restore on to a virtual machine to see for myself? Is the restore hardware specific? these servers are both physical.

Thanks much.

Windows Server Backup failing on System State in Windows Server 2012 R2

$

I have a Windows Server 2012 R2 machine running as a Domain Controller which seems to be randomly failing backups when it comes to the system state. I am running full backup every hour. On average, a successful backup will take no longer than 15 minutes. I have seen it fail sometimes nine times in a row so I doubt that it is the length of the backup preventing this. I do have a cloud backup software (Carbonite) that runs nightly and am not ruling this program out. I am making my backups to an external RAID array directly attached to the server via eSATA.

Some of the errors that show up in wbadmin are:

  • The operation ended before completion. Detailed error: Another shadow copy creation is already in progress. Wait a few moments and try again. (the previous and subsequent backup were successful)
  • The backup operation of the volume did not start. (In this error, nothing was backed up and the status says "The operation failed because another operation was in progress. This one occurred six of nine times in the 9x failed backup tries.

In just about all cases it is the system state where the backup fails. In Event Viewer I see these Errors mentioned:

  • 0x80780034
  • 0x80780017

Compatibility b/w System Center 2012 R2 DPM to backup Hyper-V Failover Cluster on Windows Server 2012

Hi,

I'm planning to backup VMs hosted on CSV with System Center 2012 R2 DPM.

My hosts OS is Windows Server 2012 DC while System Center 2012 R2 DPM will be installed as VM in another server (not included in the failover cluster) using Win Server 2012 R2 as the OS, the reason to use R2 because in R2 DPM can be installed as VM thus I can conserve hardware resources.

I want to ask whether there will be any compabitility issues if I using different OS between the hosts and DPM server?

Thanks in advance,

Johanes.L

WSB My daily backups are too large - Server copies too much per day

$

Hello everybody,

since a couple of years now, I am backing up my 2008 R2 Server (DC and fileserver) with Microsoft Windows Server backup. For this task I am using five external USB HDDs (2TB). My server contains a 120 GB system drive and a 2 TB volume for storing data of our fileserver as well as different backups from other servers. My data drive is relatively full. I have about 900 GB of data stored, 800 GB free. So on my 2TB destination drives, the first full backup only uses about 1,2 TB of space. The rest, 800 GB, should be availavble for the smaller incremental backups (I know it's not a real incremental backup because of VSS, but WSB also calls it incremental)

I am backing up daily and this worked perfectly fine for years. I always had about 50 to 80 backups available because the daily rate of change was always relatively small. The first time WSB backs up all the data, and the following ones, it only copied a very small ammount (the changed data), which was maybe 5 or 6 GB at most. This is also the maximum amount of data changed per day. The fileserver with userdata changes at most 1GB, the rest are smaller backups, coming from other servers.

Since some time now, I have a problem with this. Windows Server Backup copies too much data per day. Sometimes "only" 30GB but some times also 60GB or 90 GB. This can never be the ammount of changed data. Because of that, the 2TB destination drive can only store about 5-8 backups, instead of much more as before.

Because I can not see, which files are really copied, I can't find where the problem is. I first thought it has something to do with our DFSR fileserver. But WSB does not back up the staging, conflicts and dfsrprivate folders by default (registry key "FilesNotToBackup").

I did a simple file based search in the explorer, searching for files which changed the last day. The results are as expected only about 3 GB big.

I already deleted my backup schedule completely, recreated it from scratch and also formatted all my drives in this step, so it is totally clean. But I have the same problem. The last 4 days, I had the same destination drive connected. First day, full backup all data, next day 40gb, next day 99gb.

I do not know what I can do.

Windows server 2012 system state backup to NAS fails

When I try doing a system state backup of a DC to a NAS using Windows Server Backup, it'll work the first time, but on all successive runs it fails with the error "Error in deletion of [C:\System Volume Information\001.dat] while pruning the target VHD: Error [0x80070020] The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." If I delete the previous backup from the NAS, the next backup works, then all successive backups again have the problem.

The Windows Server is 2012 (not R2) & the NAS is a Netgear ReadyNas is 316 using firmware 6.5.1. The NAS is domain joined. I tried setting the SMB version on the NAS to 2.0 instead of the default 3.0; it made no difference.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks!

Event 10172, Hyper-V-VMMS on backups for only two VM's (out of 6)

Hi All,

I'm receiving Catastrophic VSS failure when trying to backup Hyper-V VM. I have 6 VM's in total- 4 of them are using shared storage configured on the cluster.

Two VM's are using storage on the Physical Hyper-V hosts- those two are reporting Event 10172, Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF) when trying to backup.

Did anyone come accross similar scenario and will be able to advise?

Any help is much appreciated,

Cheers, Tomek

Can't backup on WD 'My Passport Ultra'

Hello:

I bought 5-1TB Ultra Passports about 3 months ago. The USB Ultra drives are now full and will not backup. I tried to format one and 2008 Server R2 <g class="gr_ gr_289 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Punctuation multiReplace" data-gr-id="289" id="289">still</g> says the drive is full even though windows says it has 900GB free. I want it to roll off the oldest backup and then put the newer one on the Ultra. But can't find how to do that either. I'm using the 'Windows Server Backup' software that came with the server. I really need help ASAP. No backups for 5 days and I've given up trying to figure it out on my own.

Any help would be appreciated

How to restore other than most recent backup

$

I have a system with Windows 2008 server R2 Foundation SP1. I have a USB connected external drive that I use for my Windows Backup. I use the Windows Server Backup that comes with the operating system. I back the system up every night at 9pm.

Last week there was a Microsoft update of some kind but since then my system sill not run Windows Update and the Microsoft Security Essentials that I had running is gone form the system. I have tried various suggestions to get the Windows Update running again, but none have been successful. So I figured I would restore my system back to what it was on October 1.

I opened the Windows Server Backup from the start->administrator tools->Windows Server Backup i see the dialog window with three sections. The first section (Messages) shows the last 6 days of backup.

The middle section (status) has three sections, Last Backup, Next Backup and All Backups. In the list of All Backups from yesterday's date until I believe when I started the first backup. So I figured I would be able to restore to one of the earlier times.

I shut down my server.

I moved the external drive to another computer on the network.

I then installed the original system disk and followed the instructions for repairing the computer. I had to tell it to look on the network to find the system image. I finds only what it says it he last backup image. I did not want to use it because the date is yesterday's date, but that version of the system has the problem so I figured restoring to that would not help. It only shows one image in the list of available images. So what good is showing me all those times if I can't restore to one of them?

Perhaps I'm missing something. Do I need to restore to that latest one and then will it ask me to what time I want?

I hope someone can answer this because there is a ton of applications on the server that would have to be reinstalled if I can't just use the backup that I thought was going to prevent a need to do that.

Thanks,

Bob
