WSB Losing Backup History - Error 24 - But not running out of space

$

There have been a couple other threads with this error, but the solutions do not apply to this situation.

Event ID : 24

Reason: Backup started a fresh backup for volume '{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}' ('Esp') : [Reason: 'Volume size changed']. This may cause loss of older backup versions when backup completes.

Result: All backup copies are wiped.

Backup_Error Log Contents: Application backup *-----------------------------*

Server 2012 R2 Datacenter using Windows Server Backup to an iSCSI target which is 10TiB in size.

Server happily formats the 10TiB and has no complaints when backing up to the target. But it never uses all the space, the maximum we have seen is 4.7TiB.

The backup will generally complete around 14-16 copies, then the next backup will wipe all history stating the error above.

We have tried wiping the NAS and rebuilding the WSB Schedule with no change to the outcome.

I've not found any limits on the amount the server will backup or the target having a limit, so please enlighten me if there is such a limit.

Any one have any ideas/thoughts? Or do we simply need to abandon WSB and move to an alternative product.

I run windows server 2012 R2 in our organization, It has WSUS, DOmain, DNS,DHCP servers running among others

Under server manager, the drive C doesnt even show the volume label and disk error " the IO operation at logical block address 0x2f9fdc0 for Disk 0(PDO name:\Device\00000033) failed due to a hardware error

Anyway, so I have purchased another Server disk and i want to remove the faulty disk and reinstall the new disk and put windows server 2012 there,

I had also created another replica domain 2 for replication purposes and the Domain users/computers/DNS have replicated. i.e I can see the users in the new created domain server , as such i assume replication as happened.

I tried doing a sytem state backup but i guess because of the disk failing , it just hangs, apparently users are able still to access the other shared folders, internet, and other domain services, but because of the warning in the server and flickering i have to replace the disk

so my question are before i remove and insert the new disk in our server do i need to transfer the FSMO roles to the new server i created for replication?

what else do i need to observe and do before replacing the disk

thank you

WSB My daily backups are too large - Server copies too much per day

Hello everybody,

since a couple of years now, I am backing up my 2008 R2 Server (DC and fileserver) with Microsoft Windows Server backup. For this task I am using five external USB HDDs (2TB). My server contains a 120 GB system drive and a 2 TB volume for storing data of our fileserver as well as different backups from other servers. My data drive is relatively full. I have about 900 GB of data stored, 800 GB free. So on my 2TB destination drives, the first full backup only uses about 1,2 TB of space. The rest, 800 GB, should be availavble for the smaller incremental backups (I know it's not a real incremental backup because of VSS, but WSB also calls it incremental)

I am backing up daily and this worked perfectly fine for years. I always had about 50 to 80 backups available because the daily rate of change was always relatively small. The first time WSB backs up all the data, and the following ones, it only copied a very small ammount (the changed data), which was maybe 5 or 6 GB at most. This is also the maximum amount of data changed per day. The fileserver with userdata changes at most 1GB, the rest are smaller backups, coming from other servers.

Since some time now, I have a problem with this. Windows Server Backup copies too much data per day. Sometimes "only" 30GB but some times also 60GB or 90 GB. This can never be the ammount of changed data. Because of that, the 2TB destination drive can only store about 5-8 backups, instead of much more as before.

Because I can not see, which files are really copied, I can't find where the problem is. I first thought it has something to do with our DFSR fileserver. But WSB does not back up the staging, conflicts and dfsrprivate folders by default (registry key "FilesNotToBackup").

I did a simple file based search in the explorer, searching for files which changed the last day. The results are as expected only about 3 GB big.

I already deleted my backup schedule completely, recreated it from scratch and also formatted all my drives in this step, so it is totally clean. But I have the same problem. The last 4 days, I had the same destination drive connected. First day, full backup all data, next day 40gb, next day 99gb.

I do not know what I can do.

How to Recover data with Windows Backup GUI?

$

- Have a Hyper-V Host (Server Core) that I want to backup to a locally attached USB Disk.

- Have a 2012 R2 management server where I have installed the Windows Backup feature as well.

Although it's not possible to connect to the remote Hyper-V host from the Windows Backup GUI directly (very strange and I can not understand this), it's possible to launch "Computer Management", connect to the remote Hyper-V host, and then launch the Windows Backup GUI from inside the computer management.

Can successfully configure and monitor the Windows Server Backup jobs this way. However, when I try to recover anything from the Hyper-V Host to an alternate location, absolutely no recovery  destination is accepted. Have tried a path on the management server, as well as on the Hyper-V host, but always getting the following error:

How can I recover anything from the Hyper-V host from the Windows Backup GUI? Recover data directly on the Hyper-V host with wbadmin.exe or any scripts is much too complicated for our service desk employees.

Thank you in advance for any help.

"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination" when trying to backup to Backup Once to Samba share on NAS

$

0

Environment:

Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials running in VirtualBox in a Windows 7 host. Networking is configured and works fine.

Background:

My only backup needs are to copy the contents of two folders to a NAS folder every day at 2 AM.

I configured a backup schedule in Windows Server Backup (wbadmin) to a network location which is hosted as a Samba share on a Synology NAS.

For authentication, I created a backup user which has the same username and password as a user on the Samba share, with permission to read and write the backup folder. I added this user to the Backup Operators group.

Problem:

When I try to run the Backup Once operation to test my backup, I get the following error message:

"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination."

What I've tried:

I verified that the location is directly accessible in Windows by copying and pasting the address from the Windows Server Backup destination into explorer. Providing the backup user credentials opened the location and creating/reading files worked fine.

Adding the backup user to the Administrators group did not have an effect.

Update 2014-02-18

I checked the backup destination and was surprised to find that the scheduled backup actually completes successfully. However, Backup Once always results in the above error message. So the problem is confined to the "Backup Once" operation.

How can I increase the free space on System Reserved

I've been having problems backing up the System State, or doing any kinds of imaging (Acronis, Replay...) for my Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Free space is plenty on the destination drive, so that can't be an issue.

I suspect the System Reserved is the culprit, since it has only 11.3 MB free space left. Is there any way that I can increase the free space on System Reserved to solve this problem? Any help is much appreciated.

Hello,

I have an HP server has internal USB port which <g class="gr_ gr_55 gr-alert gr_tiny gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling multiReplace" data-gr-id="55" id="55">i</g> can plug 256GB <g class="gr_ gr_65 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="65" id="65">usb</g> flash drive in.  I would like to backup my server to that USB flash drive but it is not showing up in the windows backup.

Is there another way to backup your server to USB flash drive.

Current OS is  Windows server 2008 R2.  will upgrade to Windows server 2012 r2 soon.

Thank you for your help.

Known good backup set now failing to restore - help

I have a server 2008r2 (SBS 2011) USB drive with a backup on it I need to restore from a second time.
First restore worked.. But I screwed up and missed the second volume (data) and need to run the restore again. but it won't work now.

all attempts to 'see' the backup fail !
In fact WBADMIN says there is no backup there (mounted USB drive as i:)

C:\>wbadmin get versions -backuptarget:i:
wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2013 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

ERROR - No backup was found.

I have closely compared the files to other good backup and all the correct (as far as I can tell) folders, .XML, and VHD files are there.

The odd thing is I've already restored from this USB drive once already

Ignoring the fun and games to do this in a VM...

I mounted the drive through, booted from the DVD/ISO, selected repair and it ran..
Like a plank, I forgot to re-arrange the volumes, format the C and D and even restore the D drive.
So I need to do it again, but it won't.. the backup set that worked for a restore 3 days ago now says it's not there.

Does the restore process somehow kill the backup?
How do I get it back.

Unable to recover when recovery files are moved

My issue is that I’m trying to recover a virtual machine that neither windows server backup or wbadmin command is able to find the recovery files for. This issue only arises when I manually copy and paste the recovery files to a different location then try to recover. If I recover straight from the original backup location there are no problems. I assume this is some sort of catalog error, but is there some work around? I want to do this so I can make a copy of backups periodically, verify they work by testing a recovery, and move them to another location for redundancies sake.

Thanks,

VSS System Writer - Inconsistent shadow copy

I have tried searching for answers to my specific issue but could not find any resolution so posting a question.

I see a Inconsistent shadow copy in VSS for System Writer when doing vssadmin list writers.

When taking a scheduled server backup (Windows Server 2012 R2), I see the following in Event logs (one for VSS and one for SPP source).

It was working fine all these years until I started mucking around with deleting backups.  Here's what I think triggered these errors.  I noticed that my backup folder was growing in size (more than twice the volume that I am backing up) and I saw that I had lots of old backups (25+), so I used wssadmin delete backup command to start deleting specific versions and when I got tired of doing it one by one, I did a wssadmin delete backup -keepVersions:5 or some number.  After these steps, subsequent backups I started noticing these errors and now I cannot take a backup without these errors/warnings.

I tried searching for these errors but I could not get to solving my issue.  I am not clear on why I have an inconsistent shadow copy or which volume/filename/directory name or volume label is being referred to in the event log errors.

Can someone please help me get rid of this error?  Now I am worried that my backups are not going to be good anymore.

Thanks for your help.

GetVolumePathName is fail on the path , winerror 0x0000007b.

DPM 2016 on Server 2016 Rolls back

$

Greetings,

I am attempting to install DPM 2016 on a Server 2016 VM.   When running the installer I am told that a "prerequisite (HyperVPowerShell) has been installed.  Restart the computer and run the application again".

Unfortunately, when I restart I get the message "We couldn't complete the features Undoing changes".

I have verified through the GUI that I have added through PS ALL of the required features, and restarts behave as expected.  It is only after running the DPM 2016 installer that it thinks it installs additional features that are then rolled back on reboot.

Thanks again for your assistance and advice in Getting DMP2016 installed.

Here is a clean copy of a single install log file refferenced in the image:
