Windows Backup Fail

I have received an error on my backup the last 4 days. This worked correctly for weeks prior to the first error.

The error is as follows: The backup operation that started at '‎2019‎-‎02‎-‎25T15:50:49.657335900Z' has failed with following error code '0x8078011E' (Windows Backup failed to get an exclusive lock on the EFI system partition (ESP). This may happen if another application is using files on the ESP. Please retry the operation.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

The error ID is 517

I am not aware of any significant changes from the last day the backup worked to the next day when it did not

File Server is running Server 2016 Standard and backup is being sent to a small NAS.

System State Backups slow to a crawl on Server 2008 R2 hosting Exchange 2010

Anyone come across system state backups that slow to a crawl ? 1MB/sec

Veritas says that neither of their products (Backup Exec 15 & 16) is the cause.

Reboots of the 2008 R2 server don't always fix it. none of the vss writers are malfunctioning according to the list. Windows Backup of the system state freezes my mailserver so I've never let it run entirely.

Anything that would help troubleshoot ? Some obscure event ID I Should look for in the logs ?

Thanks,

Jerry

Server 2016 VSS Freeze Error

Attempting to perform backup on Server 2016 and keep getting this error:

VSS error 0x800423f2: The writer's timeout expired between the Freeze and Thaw events.

I have attempted the recommended registry fix to extend the timeout times which have not resolved the issue.

Have also re-registered the services.

All updates are installed. Unit is NOT running Sophos AV which has been known to cause this issue.

Any ideas? Thank you!

Snapshot vs System State Backup

Hello,

This is for a Windows Server 2016.

So yesterday my boss asked me what is the difference between a snapshot vs a system state backup?

The difference that I know of is the snapshot you have to write or copy the Guid and a system state is what you do for a regular backup. Plus I know snapshot is suppose to be an exact copy in the exact time that you do a snapshot. Other than that I don't know what else there is for differences.

I would also like to know for myself: What is the difference between a snapshot vs a system state?

Thanks for any help given.

Could someone tell me how would I backup window server full every Friday, and then each day is incremental?? Recently in the past, it backs up Full, and then each day is incremental, as shown on the picture below.  When I schedule it in "window task schedule" to every Friday, then the backup is not occurring not even incremental everyday. Please tell me how I can backup window server full every Friday, and then each day is incremental. Thanks.

"Access denied" trying to restore files from backup

I've got Windows Server Backup on Server 2012 R2, and it's run flawlessly for years.

Last week I copied a folder from another computer to the server, and modified permissions on it so that only 2 users had access to it (a user, and the Administrator).

When I tried a test recovery from the nightly backup (Windows Server Backup), I suddenly cannot browse ANY previous day's backup, even prior to the new folder existing.  When I expand the server name, I now just get:

"Unable to browse System Reserved. Access is denied" and
"Unable to browse Local disk (C:). Access is denied

These errors only showed up after adding the user folder last week, and modifying its permissions.

Once I saw that error, I went back to the permissions on the new folder and added the user "SYSTEM", with full permissions.  But it has made no difference.

Has anyone ever seen this before?

Thanks

Dave

Server Backup - The media is write-protected (0x80070013)

I think that most are looking at the target drive as the problem.  I think the source drive is the problem.  I migrated to a new SSD and haven't had the problem with backup's that I had before.  (0x80070013)  The media is write-protected. I ran a backup last night using Windows Backup and it was taking forever.  I looked at my drive during the backup and there was a consistent hit creating the System Image.  I stopped the backup and restarted it and it completed in about 20 min.  There was no problem reported in Event Viewer.  Not sure what the problem was.    Any thoughts?

Error when trying to update Online Protection Policy in DPM 1807

Hello,

Our company makes use of System Center Data Protection Manager 1807 with Online Protection to Azure to do our long term back ups.

We are currently working to update our online protection policy to include a new file server.  When working through the "Add Online Protection" wizard in DPM, we end up with this error at the end.

When checking CBEngineCurr.log I see this series of warnings when we get the error:

Tried to look up the error 100240 and found nothing.  Also looked into the error code: CatalogUnauthorizedError and wasn't able to find a genuine solution.  Only saw things dealing with deleting a "spurious windows task" which was never explained.

Anyone else getting this and any help with a fix?  Any would be appreciated!

Hi there,

We have a problem with 1 of our domains, we want to install our backup tool from Acronis with Exchange application. Herefore we need to login as domain admin. This shows us the following error:

Cannot collect the metadata of Microsoft Exchange Server

The specified user does not have enough rights to create an application-aware backup.
TROUBLESHOOTPlease specify the credentials of a user who is a member of the 'Organization Management' role group or disable the application-aware backup of Microsoft Exchange Server.

We contacted Acronis, they told us; the problem is using the command: WHOAMI /GROUPS does not show any domain groups.. This is why Acronis software thinks our domain admin is not member of the organization management.

Somehow this does not work on any of the servers in this domain. We have more domains where this command DOES show domain groups.. We can't find anything different in the domain.

Backups taking way to long using WBadmin

Greetings,

Using WBAdmin on a scheduled task. Having issues with the "compacting of the virtual disk" taking forever, and running on every single backup (and not incremental like it's supposed to). I realize that this is a "feature", but is there any way to turn it off? It's a feature that I do not need. The current file server size is under 2tb, starts at 4:30pm and is taking almost 24+ hours to complete.

Currently just going over a 1GbE connection, would a 10GbE connection be better?

We do a full backup every day of our File Server. We are not looking to do incremental backups.

wbadmin start backup -backupTarget:\\10.x.x.x\Fileserver\ -include:c:,x: -systemstate -vsscopy -user:XX\XX -password: -allowDeleteOldBackups -quiet -noVerify

Hello,

OS - Windows Server 2012R2

100GB C: Drive - GPT Partition
100MB EFI Partition
350MB Recovery Partition
200GB Backup Partition - MBR

Trying to do full server backup (bare metal, system state, efi, and c:) and backup fails.  On the EFI partition and system state I get 'Handle is invalid'  If I check logs, I get

Backup of volume \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume2\ has failed. The handle is invalid.

After this failed backup, getting into Server Backup GUI or Disk Management/diskpart is impossible.  Must reboot server to make it work.

I've tried to use vssadmin to change location of shadowstorage, but I get invalid options error

Ideas?

Problem recovering from Windows Server Backup

Hello,

need some help, but I don't know if this is the write place.

Got a Windows 2012 R2, crashed  and a Backup in a iSCSI disk.

When I try to recover (create a Windows 2012 Boot disk with iSCSI Drivers), the recover does not recognised any backup on the iscsi.

The files are there: The original machine add 1 disk with 3 partitions (System Reserved, C and D), so 3 vhdx files, with size of the partitions.

The backups were running smoothly so i think the backups are OK.

I would like to recover the whole, machine, or some files in disk D, but when I try to mount the vhdx, on a Windows 10, the partition D shows in raw, and the file system is not recognised.

What's the best solution to recover from the Windows Server Backup?

Convert vhdx to another format?

What's the best tool to use?

Why wbadmin doesn't recognise any backups even the backups were running sucessfully?

Hi,

Can anyone recommend the best paid software which can recover data from an overwritten RAID5 Drives array which was then reconfigured as RAID 0 with new data written on it?

Thanks.

How to read a message on Windows server: >xcopy d:\*.* g:\wed /h /d /i /c /k /e /y

This message was on our server when we turned on the screen. I get that it is copying/ but I don't understand the "g:\wed" part. Is this someone outside trying to copy our database? Are they trying to xcopy to gdrive? Dodn't know I had one.

I have a issue wih Windows server Backup. I create a new task with full backup of server, include Bare-metal, system state, EFI Partition, HyperV.
Task start normally, but after few minutes, a error message bellow  appears:

The backup operation started at '2019 - 03 - 13T03: 00: 07.986929000Z' failed with the following error code '0x8078011E' (Windows Backup failed to get a unique lock on the EFI system partition ( This may occur if another application is using files in the ESP. Try the operation again.). Review the event details for a solution, and then run the backup again after you troubleshoot the problem.

windows server 2003 standard r2 sp2 unable to restore system state backup

Hi,

we had one windows server 2003 installed on hp proliant dl380 g5 server and it is working from the last 11 years. 2 months before all of a sudden the server crash due to hard drive failure. we purchase new hard drive and installed server 2003 on it. After Installation we restore one of the backups already taken before hardware failure but unfortunately system unable to boot after restoring the full backup. To check where issue lies with any backup set I restore drive backup & system state backup one by one. drive backup successfully restored and reboot properly without any problem but when we restore system state backup upon reboot server fail to start and give hal.dll corrupt or missing error.

I try to copy hal.dll file from server 2003 cd but it gives same hal.dll missing error once file copied successfully.

To go into more investigation, I came to know that hal.dll and ntoskrnl files are different in new installation & backup copy. In trying to resolve the issue, I manually copy the hal.dll and ntoskrnl from backup and put it on new installation but that also did not fix the issue and gives the same hal.dll error.

Kindly recommend if above issues lies with any hard drive because as I mention we install new hard drives and those are not identical to the one installed before. below are the details of hard drives

Old hard drive (1 port 10k serial scsi 146 GB spare 432320-001) -- 2 hard drives --

new hard drive (dual port 10k SAS 146 GB spare 418399-001)  -- 2 hard drives --

server is (HP Proliant dl380 g5)

Old hal.dll file name (hal.dll)  version (5.2.3790.3959)

new hal.dll file name (halmacpi.dll) version (5.2.3790.3959)  -- try to copy old hal file but gives hal.dll missing or corrupt error --

old ntoskrnl.exe file name (ntkrnlmp.exe)  version (5.2.3790.4478)

new ntoskrnl.exe file name (ntkrnlmp.exe) version (5.2.3790.3959)

Last thing to add also in our old scenario there are three hard drive installed but that time 2 are functional and one is dead. In New scenario, there are 2 hard drives.

I am out of options right now. Kindly recommend any solution. If you need more detail kindly let me know.
