Server 2012 Restore from System Image Recovery has odd message before shutting me out

$

I have a Windows 2012 R2 server with a bad hard drive.  I make backups every night, so i am not afraid of losing data.

Steps I have taken:

I booted into the OS Media and chose "Repair your computer"-> "Troubleshoot"->"Windows System image recovery".

I selected the latest system image backup,

Installed the correct drivers Dell perc s110 so I could see the hard drive.

Chose Format and Repartition disks.

Chose only restore System Drive only

Accepted the options and hit next

Fairly quickly I'm told that my backup is not for a Vista system.  makes no sense.  I booted up using my Dell Windows 2012 R2 x64 DVD.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

Thank you,

Curt Davenport

Windows Server 2012 - code '0x80780102' (The system writer is not found in the backup.)

I'm having an issue backing up. The system writer is not available and I've tried all the previous solutions such as (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009272) as well as others on here, setting the permissions etc. but the system writer never appears under 'vssadmin list writers'

It seems this issue has been around for many years on previous version. Is there a solution? I've spent days on this so far.

Many thanks,

Geoff

KB2781272 - Anywhere on this planet where I can get this hotfix?

I am in need of KB2781272 for my Windows Home Server 2011 but all links to its existance are no longer valid. I understand that support for this product stopped in April of 2016 but I am only looking for a hotfix file that, I would assume, still exists someplace. I am not looking for support, just the hotfix. Does anyone know where I can find it? Microsoft support has taken the attitude that its a dead product and will not seem to help. Not sure why there is no archive of old hotfixes someplace. Anyone have any ideas where I might be able to get this hotfix?

Thanks.

DPM server agents can't be reach

I have a Server 2016 DPM server.  Recently suffered a power failure and had to be restarted.  Backups have stopped.  I installed Rollup 2 on the server.  From the DPM console, I can not install new targets on the target servers to be backed up.  I get an error 311

I then tried to install the DPM manually on a targeted server.  In the file explorer, I can see the DPM server, but I can not open it.  I can not browse to the DPM Agents directory.

The five target servers can not browse the DPM server.  The server is seen in the file explorer, but when I try to open and browse the DPM server I get a 0x80070035 error - Network Path Not Found.

Windows Server 2003 -activation required after recovery

Running an old Server 2003. ( I know its not advised, but we are)

So hard disk completely fails over the weekend and we restore everything from backups fine.  One slight thing is that reactivation is required (because added a tape drive and a LAN card.

So activation doesn't work over the internet - server not there.  Phone up and of course I'm told its not supported any longer.

I saw on another forum the for another product that it could be possible that the server address is different, if you modify hosts file or DNS its possible to activate.

I was hoping that someone might know the server address used for activation that might have legacy ones.  I am really not sure how it works though so maybe this is not possible.

Any other suggestions would be more than welcome otherwise I will have to resort to a crack / unlicensed product key (or upgrade) aren't I?

upgrade storage controller

I have to upgrade the drives and the controller on a few Dell blade server from SATA to RAID. I would like to upgrade the drives, not necessarily at the same time but as part of the job. The current configuration is Win 2008 R2 with 2 SATA drives mirrored in Windows, so dynamic disks. I have replacement 6/iR RAID controllers to go in place of the existing non-RAID. The RAID controller is supported natively by Win 2k8R2 so no drivers are required.

I'm a bit puzzled about how to go about this exercise, primarily because of the dynamic drives and also because of the fact that on a blade you only have one type controller in at any one point. If anyone has done anything like this and is willing to share the experience, I'd greatly appreciate it.

How to Backup Virtual Domain Controller Windows 2012 R2

Hi

We have setup Domain Controller in Virtual environment. Currently we have 1 DC  and 2 ADC. one Physical host with windows 2012 R2 Standard  hosting DC ( Windows 2012 R2 Standard) in Hyper-V environment. Hyper- V disc are stored in the D  Drive of Physical host.

In the Same site we have another ADC in different Physical Machine with similar setup. Third ADC is located in our DR site which also has similar Setup.

My question is how do i backup domain controller in virtual environment. Somewhere i have read that DC snapshot or export copy should not be taken.

Kindly suggest  how to backup DC. what are the best backup/Restore policy we should follow and how frequently we should backup.

Windows Server 2012 R2 - recovery points missing after change in schedule.

In Windows Server 2012 R2 , I had a set of recovery points inside of the Windows Server Backup application.

There is about a week's worth of backup.

After changing the backup schedule of the backup and the Windows Server Backup runs, all previous backups disappear from my recovery points.

What can I do to see all the original recovery points ?

Thanks.

I have a single Windows Server 2016 Hyper-v host that’s running our DC within a VM. I just happened to check the backups on the host and noticed they were completing but with errors since 4/22. The site is a very remote location but I do have remote access to both the host and VM. How can I narrow down what the cause of this error is? The external drive that's the backup target test as "ok".

Backup issue on Windows Server 2016 Essentials

Hello,

We have been having an issue for the last week with our Windows Server Backup failing on our Windows Server 2016 Essentials server.  It is failing with the application event ID 517.  The backup operation has failed with the following error code '0x807800AF' (The Volume Shadow Copy Service backup complete operation failed.  The backup backs up the EFI System partition, local disk with all the data, Bare metal recovery, but fails on the System state.  It says the Backup canceled.  System state backup was canceled.

The error in the windows server backup software is the Volume Shadow Copy Service backup complete operation failed.  A volume shadow copy service component encountered an unexpected error.

The server has been rebooted and we will get one working backup but the issue returns the following day.

Problem with VSS related to backup

$

I have a Windows 2008r2 server that is running Veritas Backup Exec and has been running for several years.  Unless something goes wrong the job status always shows "backup successful".  Starting on or around 5-9-19 I started getting a slightly different status that shows "success with exceptions".  I opened a ticket with Veritas support and after a little work with an engineer it was determined that my backups were actually running and backing up my files.  However, I felt like I needed to dig a little deeper and figure out what has changed on the server to effect the backup.

The following is the error I get from the backup log.   See it states an issue with VSS about another snapshot running.  I have not made any changes whatsoever to the server.   I had not even ran Windows updates until after I started having this issue.

- Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "F:". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft
Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). V-79-10000-11233 - VSS Snapshot error. A Microsoft Volume
Shadow Copy Service (VSS) snapshot is already running on the target computer. Only one snapshot
can run at a time. Try running the job later.

I found some information saying to turn off any Shadow copies on shared volumes so I checked the settings on the server by right-clicking the drives on the server, Properties, Shadow copies.  As I thought I did NOT have any shadow copies enabled on this server.  But, one thing I did notice was a funny looking volume listed under drives like c:, d:, etc.  The funny looking volume is shown below.

\\?\Volume{d3969e0b-34db-11e0-b58c-806e6f6e6963}\

I have had problems with backups in the past and many times if you have a large external drive or something similar connected and the drive is not formatted GPT you will get some strange VSS issues that can show up with your backups like Veritas Backup Exec.

Can anyone tell me what this funny looking volume represents or what it is and how I can remove it in hopes it will clear up my "success with exceptions" error in my backup routine?

thanks

SBS 2011 (2008 R2) BMR onto similar hardware results in Blank Screen with Mouse Pointer

$

I have an SBS 2011 (SBS 2008 R2) server on Dell T610 hardware with Raid 1 and Raid 5 drive and did a full BMR backup using Windows Server Backup Utility.  When I recover to a similar machine (Dell T610 same Raid configuration) it boots to a blank screen and mouse pointer. No matter which mode I boot into (safe modes, normal, low resolution video etc.) I cannot get past this. Also, when I tried to run SFC /SCANNOW the message came back that there is a pending repair that requires a reboot before I can run that utility.

I have tried to clear this condition by using a suggested "dism.exe /image:C:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions" but that had no effect even though the prompt came back saying the process completed successfully and would take effect on reboot.

The server is actually functional in that I can connect to it, join a computer to the domain and run Sql client software and access mapped drives etc. I just cannot login to the machine and cannot Remote Desktop into it either.

I am actually restoring it again overnight and set it so it will not restart automatically. I am hoping that it will allow the sfc /scannow at that point.

My question is, can anyone think of other things I might test/apply before the very first reboot that might help me avoid the same results?  So close. Thanks so much.

Hello,

I'm creating a script to automatize my Wsus offline. I created a backup from the source server and I want to restore it on the destination server using powershell Server backup cmdlets.

Here is what I've done so far:

on the source server:

wsus is on E:\Wsuscontent
I backup to a USB drive I:\

On the destination server:

Wsus is on e:\wsuscontent
Backup is on \\mynas\backup

To restore I use:

$BackupLocation = New-WBBackupTarget -NetworkPath "\\mynas\backup"
$Backups = Get-WBBackupSet -BackupTarget $BackupLocation -MachineName SourceServer
Start-WBFileRecovery -BackupSet $Backups -NoRestoreAcl -Option SkipIfExists -SourcePath "E:\wsuscontent" -TargetPath "E:\" -Force

And I get the following error: "Start-WBFileRecoverry: The specified backup storage location is invalid."

any idea ?
