Loss of hardware and most of backup data, wanting to recover whats left on sole remaining drive, ( non operating ware drive)

I have lost three computers and a server to electrical storm, I do however have a remaining backup drive from the server that is readable, on this drive there is contents of business files , excel , word, records of clients, etc..., I have reinstalled the server software it is now backing up the computers. I know the name of the prior hardware ( computers and have renamed them the same) the server recognizes the data files from before but will not restore it to the new computers as it recognizes the difference in the hardware. It says that it "does not recognize the operating system in the restoring computer and stops the restore at 81 %. So I have the files as data, and am wondering if there is something I can do to make the server recognize them as the old boxes, if so how, or if for nothing else, is the a program that can read these files and take the data files and restore them to the individual files the were to restore excel , word, etc.. The process to repair this is on going.. I will say that the server sees the files as an archive and its partial as if it wasn't a full backup, but the one moment that one of the burned computers did work , I attempted to get anything I could back and it showed me the files though partial and tried a restore until the computer it was restoring stopped and never again restarted, nor were its drives readable or operable . ( the system drive worked for ten minutes and failed on error, the others could not even be seen, I haves sent the other drives out for forensic and no cigar, they are ded dead....so my little hope is on this one set of files which contents contain a 250g of partials that would help a lot to recover,. There was no back up software just the windows server auto remote back up process, for the client boxes, is all. This hs been a really bad loss in most cases but any reuse of any data is a huge gain, due to our business,

Thanks.

Windows Storage Server 2008 backup fail to UEFI based computers

Hai All

I have got Windows Storage Server 2008 running on a WD Sentinel DX4000. Recently my company bought a couple of new Dell laptops all running windows 8.1 64bit OS. Only three older laptops were left. Now for the fun part...I installed the connectors pointing to the Sentinel on the laptops, and as expected the pc's show on the dashboard of the Storage Server, but all of the backups fail on the newer laptops. I installed the connectors on the older laptops as well and they go through no problem

The only difference between the older laptops and the new ones are the GPT partition drives and laptops running on UEFI, the older laptops, although running the same OS, do not have GPT and UEFI. I looked at the Event Viewer and found three errors to do with the backup: Event 514 pointing to a ClientVSSProblem, Event 8194 pointing to Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querrying for the VSSWriterCallback interface, hr=0x80070005,Access Denied and the last one is Event 513 CAPI2, Cryptographic Service failed while processing onIdentity() call in the System Writerobject Details: AddLegacyDriverFiles: Unable to back up image of binary Microsoft Link-Layer Discovery Protocol. I did as most articles suggested but with no change. From changing registries to taking ownership of the %windir% and adding the NT AUTHORITY, the NT Service and BUILTIN\Users. No change.

Help is much appreciated before i make a boat anchor out of the WD Sentinel.

Kind regards

Hi, my name's Jig. I uninstalled and reinstalled Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter due to some technicalities, however,

on the same machine still. I know that doing the latter would really hurt the activation process but I was without options.

Please help.

Backing Up Bitlocker Encrypted Disks

$

I'm planning to have bitlocker encrypt the hard drives on my server, but I have questions about windows server backups of encrypted hard drives.  I use both file AND system image backups (i.e. Bare metal recovery, system state etc.), so my first question is are those backups also encrypted.  I seem to recall (though I hadn't gotten around to using it) that 2008 R2 backups were DECRYPTED (in any event, NOT ENCRYPTED), but I can't find any information about whether that's still true in 2012 R2.

I'd be grateful if someone could enlighten me about this.

Volume shadow copies

Hi,

My server's hard disk partition (compressed NTFS) is of 1.5 TB and it has shared folders on it and Volume Shadow Copies were configured. for more than a year there has not been any problem with the shadow copies. But suddenly it stopped taking the Shadow copies. The data size is now half of the total space. I have freed some space by deleting four oldest shadow copies. still there is no solution. Actual space allocated for shadow copies is 120GB.

Every day, it is scheduled to run at 1:00PM. In the Event Viewer, I have these messages

1. At 1:00:55PM, The Volume Shadow Copy service entered the running state.

2. At 1:00:55PM, The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service entered the running state.

3. At 1:05:45PM, The Volume Shadow Copy service entered the stopped state.

4. At 1:05:45PM, The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service entered the stopped state.

But if I run the scheduled task, the task is running.

What could be the reason? Please suggest.

I've google a lot about these errors but nothing concerning Windows Server 2012.

VSS Writers does not show any errors (using vssadmi nlist writers)

No disk error anywhere in the event viewer.

I've also check the "JUNCTION" issue (mostly known in Win 7 and Win server 2008 r2) but none of them are "mounted drive" so ...

I'm really runing out of idea ...

EDIT :

No updates are applyed to the machine.

will try with updates ...

EDIT :

even with the last Windows updates, i keep get the same error

Windows Server 2012 Unresponsive

Hi,

We have a Windows Server 2012 Standard under ESXi 5.1  using it as a Terminal Server for 45 users with RDP. More or less, every two weeks the system became unresponsive. When the users try to enter, only present a Black Screen. When we try to use the System Console, it never log in. The only solution is turn it off and on again the vm. We did a research in the forums, but there are no issues regarding 2012 and this strange behavior.

Any ideas what may be happen?

I have a brand new 2008R2 SP1 server (Domain Controller) where I try to make SystemState backup. Backup seems to work fine, but I can not delete oldest.
I'm uncertain if I do have a valid SS backup.

So far everything seems ok.

If I try with -keepversions, I get same result:

Enumerating system state backups...
ERROR - No system state backups were found.
This command can be used to delete backups that only contain the system state.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So do I have a valid Systemstate backup ?
And can I trust I can use it to recover if needed, since it says "No system state backups were found" ?
And why can't I delete the oldest backup ?

Backup and Restore image fails 3TB Advanced Format Drive Windows 7-32 SP1

$

Windows native backp fails to create an System Image, or a Complete PC Backup.

This occurs in Windows 7, 64 bit Professional, Windows 7, 32bit Ultimate, Windows Vista Business, 32 bit. It occurs in 6 different computers I've tried. All the backup drives are 3TB. I have tried Seagte USB and Hitachi USB drives. 4 of them. The Windows 7 Ultimate, 32bit machine has SP1. All operating systems are using the current Service Packs, and all of the MS Updates including all of the recommended harware drivers. All of the systems are using the latest BIOS, firmware and OEM drivers as well.

It looks like the issue may be causes by a deficiency in Windows related to the Advanced Format drive spec. All of the computers that qualified had the AF hotfix applied; Advanced Format Drives 512e 4k, Vista and 2008 - KB2470478, Windows 7, and 2008 R2 KB982018

Error messages follow:

The Backup Failed.

Error message: One of the backup files could not be created. (0x8078002A)

The request could not be perfomed because of an I/O error. (0x8007045D)

This deficiency seems to apply across the board to different hardware manufacturers of external hard drives.

From what I have heard, Western Digital may have a format utility that addresses this issue, but only for WD drives.

Help.

Windows Server Backup scheduled task run successfully but backup do not start (not running) on Windows Server 2012

$

Hi,

A backup job has been setup on Windows Server 2012 (Platform: Win32NT; ServicePack: ; Version: 6.2.9200.0; VersionString : Microsoft Windows NT 6.2.9200.0) via Windows Backup Software UI (Local Backup 1.0).

It is appearing as a scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup" belonging to user 'nt authority\system' in task scheduler.

The problem is that the Backup job never start despite the scheduled task running and completing successfully (when run automatically or manually)!

Would you be able to explain why and assist in resolving that issue?

Here is what we know:

When the backup is run manually via the Windows Backup Software UI, it works fine.

When the backup is run via command line (as set in schedule task) in a cmd command prompt (as local/domain 'administrator' or as 'nt authority\system' which is possible by running command prompt via 'PsExec.exe -i -s cmd'), something like "%windir%\System32\wbadmin.exe start backup -templateId:{f11eb3aa-74e7-4ff4-a57b-d8d567ee3f77} -quiet", it works fine.

If you manually run the preset scheduled task while logged in as administrator, the task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.

Idem if you schedule task is run automatically at scheduled time.

The schedule task run and complete successfully but the backup job does not start.

It is confirmed by running the following in a command prompt as 'nt authority\system':

schtasks /run /tn "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup"
SUCCESS: Attempted to run the scheduled task "\Microsoft\Windows\Backup\Microsoft-Windows-WindowsBackup".

Despite success result, the Backup job does not start running...

No errors or warning appears anywhere in Event Logs (Microsoft > Windows > Backup or Task Scheduler) nor in the scheduled task History tab. The schedule task complete successfully but no Backup job is run...

If scheduled task automatically set by Windows Backup software is duplicated (copied) and set manually it runs fine as 'administrator' and as 'nt authority\system' (subject that 'nt authority\system' is added to the 'Backup Operators' AD group).

Here is an export of the current pre-set schedule task, is there any settings that need to be changed to make it works?

Backup Fails after several successful days - errors "Device is not ready" & "The System cannot find the path specified"

Well I am back again, with another backup issue. After fixing one issue with the backup failing after a reboot, I have encountered another which is starting to cause me a lot of headaches.

The setup is thus - the backups run on a host machine running Windows Server 2012, this hosts three VM's (1x Server 2012 and 2x2008 Since the 19th of December a single backup drive has been attached for the backups (not ideal but the company had closed for the holidays) up until the 26th these backups were working flawlessly.

On the 26th the backup completed with warnings, transferring a good 90% of the data to the backup (2/3 VMs). On the 27th it transferred a bit more at around 95% (2/3 VMs).  On the 28th, it didn't completely backup a single VM.

On the 28th this error appeared in the event logs and after checking in the snap-in the same errors appear on the warning days as the errored day.

---------------------

The backup operation that started at '‎2014‎-‎12‎-‎28T20:30:09.774946400Z' has failed with following error code '0x80780049' (None of the items included in backup were backed up.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Thanks in advance/

The creation of the shadow copy on the backup destination has failed. Detailed Error: The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with the error 0x80042316

When using Microsoft Backup on a Windows Server 2008 SP2 (not R2 - [Microsoft version 6.0.6002]) I get the error "The creation of the shadow copy on the backup destination has failed. Detailed Error: The Volume Shadow Copy operation failed with the error 0x80042316"

The odd thing is that when I start the backup manually, it works fine. When  it runs automatically the error appears.

When doing a SFC /scannow I do get errors that can't be corrected.

Is there anything short of rebuilding this machine (It's a DC and the only one this office has) I can do to fix this?

WS2012R2Essentials Reboot causes Server Backup Hang at Storage Spaces Drive

$

I am storing 7 Client and System backups on a standalone Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Server OPS in the LAN. All works well until I have to reboot the Server, then the Server backups hang and fail when the Storage Spaces Drive tries to do it's backup at 66%. To fix this failure, I have to stop the server backup and disable the Server backup settings to my External USB Drive, then re-setup the Server backup settings, then re-start the Server System backups to get it to run the Server backups to completion. This forces a completely new and long backup sequence. Can anyone instruct me on how to prevent this redo of the complete backup sequence every time I have to reboot the Server and make all backups run normally again? - - - Thanks Shorto
