Hi, a planned backup on win srv 2012 essentials R2 terminates unsuccessful with error code 2147942634 and the text "more data is abailable" when beginning backup with the EFI start partition. The other, usually follwing backup-locations, do not start backup thereafter. Every 2nd backup seems to be affeted. Manually started backups work fine. Mike.

We have Windows server 2008R2 SP1 and Sharepoint 2010 web on it.

It's a real HP Proliant dl360 G7, and we have no 3rd party backup software, hyper-v or MSSQL services on it.

Backup doesn't work.

The error:

The backup operation stopped before completing.
Detailed error: ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has
occurred: (0x800423f3)
The writer experienced a transient error.  If the backup process is retried,
the error may not reoccur.

A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation failed. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information.
ERROR - A Volume Shadow Copy Service operation error has
occurred: (0x800423f3)
The writer experienced a transient error.  If the backup process is retried,
the error may not reoccur.

There is no vss or spp errors in app or system log with the exception of the failed backup job itself:

The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎03‎-‎17T07:42:40.538000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up failed with following error code '2155348129'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

Windows Server 2012 - Backup error - Access denied for few users.

$

Greeting's, I am having problem backing up few users in the AD. All users have folder redirection enabled. These few users where I am having problem have local administrator rights through GP. Earlier they were getting backed up without problems but lately only those users have - cannot access files - access denied error.

A single physical server is having AD role which has all the user data hosted too. Backup is done on an external drive. Server is fully patched and so are clients. Backup is run 4 times a day. All users get backed up correctly except these 4 users.

Any idea what can help me resolve the problem.

Thanking you in anticipation,

Parth D. Maniar

VSS Writer failures during VM backup of server with Oracle application installed

$

I am experiencing problems with Hyper-V backups on one of our VMs which has the Oracle application installed.  I use DPM 2012 R2 but have also tried this with Windows backup which fails as well (hence posting it to this forum).  The Oracle VSS Writer is not installed on the server and the VSS writers which fail (timeout) are the following:

System Writer

ASR Writer

Shadow Copy Optimization Writer

WMI Writer

Registry Writer

IIS Config Writer

COM+ REGDB Writer

After initial investigation I have discovered that when the customer runs a script to stop the Oracle processes / services it seems that the WLS_Reports service / processes are causing the problem as when stopped by the script the backups run successfully but when running the backups fail and the above VSS writers timeout (further errors in the thread posted in the DPM forum linked at the bottom of this).

I have also noticed that when I stop the Hyper-V Volume Shadow Copy Requestor the backup runs successfully but connectivity to the server briefly times out which is not an ideal solution.

When the backups fail I get 2 errors in the application log on the VM:

Event Id 12293, VSS - Error calling a routine on a shadow copy provider {GUID for the Hyper-V IC Software Shadow Copy Provider}.  Routine details PreFinalCommitSnapshots ({GUID}, 5) [hr = 0x800705b4, This operation returned because the timeout period expired.]

Event Id 19, vmicvss - Not all the shadow volumes arrived in the guest operating system.

I also get other errors and symptoms which I have posted in the DPM forum here: Backup fails for a Hyper-V guest with VSS Writer failures using DPM 2012 R2 - Hyper-V guest has Oracle application installed

I know that the fact this server experienced no problems with backups before Oracle was installed and is successful when the WLS_Reports service is stopped would lead people to assume that the cause is related to the Oracle service but I need to know if there is anything from a Windows / Microsoft point of view that I need to be aware of which will help me resolve this issue.

Thanks

Chris

"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination" when trying to backup to Backup Once to Samba share on NAS

$

Environment:

Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials running in VirtualBox in a Windows 7 host. Networking is configured and works fine.

Background:

My only backup needs are to copy the contents of two folders to a NAS folder every day at 2 AM.

I configured a backup schedule in Windows Server Backup (wbadmin) to a network location which is hosted as a Samba share on a Synology NAS.

For authentication, I created a backup user which has the same username and password as a user on the Samba share, with permission to read and write the backup folder. I added this user to the Backup Operators group.

Problem:

When I try to run the Backup Once operation to test my backup, I get the following error message:

"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination."

What I've tried:

I verified that the location is directly accessible in Windows by copying and pasting the address from the Windows Server Backup destination into explorer. Providing the backup user credentials opened the location and creating/reading files worked fine.

Adding the backup user to the Administrators group did not have an effect.

Update 2014-02-18

I checked the backup destination and was surprised to find that the scheduled backup actually completes successfully. However, Backup Once always results in the above error message. So the problem is confined to the "Backup Once" operation.

Greetings,

After completely rebuilding my WSE 2012 R2 with Update box on new hardware (server class this time) I find I am unable to get Windows Backup to run. It confiures just fine, but continuously fails when attempting the backup itself.

Any suggestions as to where to look or what may be wrong?  I am using the same external drive dock as before when everything worked fine, but now cannot backup the server.

Please help,

After the recent patching activity, we are unable to restart the MS SQL services and get 'Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.' Rebooting the server did not help. Could it be caused by these patches? Has anyone else also faced the same issue? If yes, kindly let me know the fix.

Thanks in advance.

Hi friends,

Stuck with a small issue. One of my physical servers running hyper v crashed due to hardware failure. But, all the vms running in hyper-v were being daily backed up on a network location using windows server backup.

There were 3 vms  running in hyper-v which were restored (re-imaged) to another server running hyper-v. (restored as a VM).

Out of 3, 2 were successfully restored. But no matter what, I am unable to recover the third one. Screenshots are attached. Can anyone please guide me .

Thank you,

Sufiyan

My Exchange 2013 backup is already 40 GB, but my database is only 1 GB or so.  I haven't even full migrated from my 2010 installation so not all the mailboxes have moved over yet.

Any idea why it is so large and anyway to make it smaller?

The ideal goal would be to have a one backup job "A" backup weekly to the drive "weekly" and a backup job "b" backup monthly to the drive "monthly." However windows server backup does not give me an option to create a second backup job. How would I go about getting this done?

Many thanks in advance.

Dear All,

I am trying to setup Windows Volume Backup on a Server 2012 R2 to backup to a network share.

On the other side where I have the network share is also running windows server 2012 R2.

When i run the wizard to setup the schedule backup I get the error message "The user name being used for accessing the remote share folder is not recognized by the local computer".

Both the servers are not a member of the Domain and nor a DC and they are available as VM's. The host machine is also not a member of a Domain neither a DC.

Kindly let me know any solution to this issue.

Regards,

Ahmed.
