Server 2012R2 Backup Completed with Warnings

Hello.  We have a Windows Server 2012 R2 server that is having an issue completing backups successfully.  If we were to reboot the server, we will get one successful backup but then all subsequent backups will be Completed with warnings until the server is rebooted.

The server is Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard running Hyper-V.  The vhd and vhdx files backup with out issue but when trying to backup the virtual servers online, we get the backup failed to complete.

The full error is Completed with warnings.  Backup succeeded but some components backed up were inconsistent in the snapshot.  The application this component belongs to may not function properly after this backup is used for recovery.

wbadmin delete backup - delete version but does not delete version in Explorer

Environment: Windows 2012 R2

Hi,

Perhaps someone can explain this for me . . .

I am performing a BareMetal backup to a local volume on the server.

I have a scheduled Bi-Weekly BareMetal backup. One hour before the backup, I run a maintenance task to keepVersion:2 so that only 2 versions of the BareMetal backup are kept.

The next BareMetal backup which is run is successful. I open a PS session, runwbadmin get versions and it shows 3 BareMetal backups performed. 2 weeks later, the next maintenance scheduled task is run, it removes the oldest BareMetal backup and displays 2 BareMetal versions (wbadmin get versions). When I open Explorer, under WindowsImageBackup\<Servername>, it still shows the BareMetal backup version which was deleted. I.E. runningwbadmin get versions shows 2 versions of the BM backup, but 3 versions exist in Explorer.

As this continues, the BM's are deleted when running wbadmin get versions but the files are not being removed.

If this continues without my checking it, I will eventually run out of disk space.

Why aren't the files for the BM backup being deleted when my maintenance task (wbadmin DELETE BACKUP -keepversions:2) runs?

Help!

David

"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination" when trying to backup to Backup Once to Samba share on NAS

$

Environment:

Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials running in VirtualBox in a Windows 7 host. Networking is configured and works fine.

Background:

My only backup needs are to copy the contents of two folders to a NAS folder every day at 2 AM.

I configured a backup schedule in Windows Server Backup (wbadmin) to a network location which is hosted as a Samba share on a Synology NAS.

For authentication, I created a backup user which has the same username and password as a user on the Samba share, with permission to read and write the backup folder. I added this user to the Backup Operators group.

Problem:

When I try to run the Backup Once operation to test my backup, I get the following error message:

"Windows Backup cannot read the backup destination."

What I've tried:

I verified that the location is directly accessible in Windows by copying and pasting the address from the Windows Server Backup destination into explorer. Providing the backup user credentials opened the location and creating/reading files worked fine.

Adding the backup user to the Administrators group did not have an effect.

Update 2014-02-18

I checked the backup destination and was surprised to find that the scheduled backup actually completes successfully. However, Backup Once always results in the above error message. So the problem is confined to the "Backup Once" operation.

Windows Server backup, all critical/bare-metal job failing - 2019 Essentials

Good Afternoon,

I need some help with Windows Server Backup (wbadmin) for Server 2019 Essentials. The setup is a VM Domain Controller hosted using Hyper-V Core. I can carry out a file backup but when I try and carry out a bare-metal or critical It keeps failing. I've tried backing up to attached disk/volume added through the Hypervisor (D:) on the VM, and a share on a NAS, but without success.

Below are screenshots and the related logs, any help would be much appreciated!

Windows Server 2012 R2 - recovery points missing after change in schedule.

In Windows Server 2012 R2 , I had a set of recovery points inside of the Windows Server Backup application.

There is about a week's worth of backup.

After changing the backup schedule of the backup and the Windows Server Backup runs, all previous backups disappear from my recovery points.

What can I do to see all the original recovery points ?

Thanks.

Any ideas how to fix the issue?

We tried to do a bare metal backup of Windows 2012 R2 by choosing the Baremetal recovery option from the GUI of  Windows Server backup.  It would not work - we got a message that it could not backup the EFI partition.  So how does one do a bare metal backup with Windows Server Backup?

Bare metal recovery backup using 'Windows Server Backup' keep failing

I have a VM of Windows Server Essentials 2019 as a AD/DC, hosted using Hyper-V Core. I am trying to carry out a 'Bare metal recovery' backup but the job keeps failing, the log below seems to suggest a permissions issue either the Recovery or EFI System partition, any assistance would be much appreciated!

Hi Everyone,

I have two question for Windows Server 2019 Backup Features.

1. Do I need to install this features before using it or its already installed together with the OS.

2. What if the OS is corrupt or damage and need to be reinstalled, the previous backup can be use or restore the files?

Thank you

Get a list of Targets from WBADMIN

I know how to add a backup destination using wbadmin.  But how do we do the inverse to remove redundant targets.

If I issue the command

WBADMIN ENABLE BACKUP -removetarget

i need the disk id to be able to remove target drives registered with Windows Server Backup (WSB).

How do I get the Disk ID for drives that say have failed and been disposed of that WSB has registered with it

WBADMIN GET DISKS

only tells us the drives that are physically connected to the server at the time.

Why: I have a client site that is quite harsh on their external drives used for backup.  It has a large number of drives registered as destinations and I'd lke to cull them.  Becuase it is easy to use one of the disk editing tools to write the disk id and hence impersonate a backup drive, I'd like to remove any that are no longer alive.

I have done a search of the registry for a know DISK ID but none returned assuming they are either stored encrypted or stored elsewhere.

VSS Timing Out When Production Checkpoint Ran

When taking a production checkpoint in Hyper-V it looks like it completes, but if I pull up vssadmin it shows the VSS writers as timed out. However Hyper-V looks like it completed the production checkpoint. I need to understand why VSS is timing out on 4-5 VMs but not others.

Here is a screenshot:

VSS DFS rep Writer not _available_

$

I'm not sure what the proper description for the issue is so I used 'available'.

I chose this particular forum because it is backup related - albeit for a Carbonite installed backup routine.  CB said the issue is purely local (ie not CB's responsibility).  CB does expect to see the DFSR writer listed when running VSSAdmin list writers.

W2012R2.  the DFS Rep services shows Automatic and Running in Services.msc

The server roles DFS Namespaces and Replication are installed.

In a elevated CP: Vssadmin List Writers does not show DFS at all.

I've re-reged all of (supposedly) the required DLL in win\system32.  Made no difference.

Most hits in a search of the issue reference issues where it shows failed in VSSAdmin.  But this _missing_ from vssadmin.

Is there some sort of VSSADmin.msc that will allow/force the _enabling_ or  _availability_ of a writer?

barring that, anybody have any other ideas of why the service "runs" but manages to hide?

Tanks everyone

Allowing a User to swap external Server Backup drive

$

There was a question on this 8 years ago but it was never satisfactorily answered.

A customer wants an employee to be able to swap out the external (USB) Windows Backup drive, instead of requiring a senior person with Administrator privileges (e.g., the boss doesn’t want to stay late every Friday to do the swap; but doesn’t want to give Administrator privileges to junior users).

It would be very dangerous to have the person just yank the drive out without first logging in and Eject Media. Even when you do the Eject Media, the server takes a long time of machinations to finally say it is safe to remove.

I would expect that putting that person’s User account into the Backup Operators group would give them the ability to Eject Media, but it seems that it doesn’t. Isn’t the most likely routine action of a Backup Operator to swap external drives?

The policy setting “Devices: Allowed to format and eject removable media” would seem to be the problem, solved by changing the setting to allow Interactive Users. But that doesn’t seem to be the solution.

Their server is 2012 Server Essentials R2, although I expect the same solution as regular Server (unfortunately. The advantage of Essentials is that you should not have to dig into the bowels of Server where any change can easily have unintended consequences).

Is there a good way to solve this issue?  Thanks.

I'm trying to write a script that searches and deletes files in a particular folder:

\\server\e$\XenProfiles7\%username%\UPM_Profile\AppData\Local\Citrix\AuthManager\Tracing

So the folder is Tracing, but I need the script to search ALL theTracing folders for all users (\\server\e$\XenProfiles7\%username%) then delete only all of the contents of the Tracing folders.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated

Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Backup and Restore Issues with Cluster Shared Volume

$

Good day,

I am running a Windows Server 2016 Datacenter 2 nodes hyper-converged cluster. I am using Storage Spaces Direct to create a Cluster Shared Volume (1 TB virtual hard drive). In order to be accessible on both nodes, it creates a volume path on the C: Drive where my OS is installed.

OS: 120 GB SSD

CSV: 1 TB

The issue: When I backup my C: Drive (by using Windows Backup or any other backup solution), it runs fine. However, when I am trying to restore C: Drive, it says I don't have sufficient space to restore the image and I need at least 1 TB drive (the 1 TB CSV is seen as "part" of C: Drive).

The question: I know my setup can't use a drive letter, but is there a way to "hide" the CSV when performing OS backups?

Thank you!
