Windows Server Backup STILL causing event ID 55 (chkdsk)

Hallo everybody,
I have a Windows 2008 R2 SP1, latest Updates till today, running as DC and fileserver in my domain.
It's a HP ProLiant Server with a B110i Raid Controller, 4 1TB HDDs by Seagate in a RAID 10 Array. This Array has two partitions. C with 120GB and the rest 1.7TB as drive D. Drive D is the volume where my fileserver data is stored.
I am using VSS twice a day (7:00 and 12:00) and backup the whole server once a day at 0:30 to an external USB HDD.

Some days ago I found out, that the server produces the event id 55 every some hours, telling me to run chkdsk on my Volume D:, where my files are located.
This error hasn't been there before. It seemed to me, that it occured shortly after every VSS Snapshot. I have deleted all VSS Snapshots at once. Now this error is gone. When a new VSS snapshot is created, the event does NOT occur any more.

However, it DOES occur every time, shortly after the backup at night starts. It starts at 0:30 and at 0:37 two events 55 are produced telling me I should check the volume D wiht chkdsk. I did this several times. (chkdsk /F) No errors are beeing found (I do not have any problems with my files at all). I can not run chkdsk /r because it is a RAID array.

The backup finishes without any error.

I found this topic here about the same problem:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsbackup/thread/5cbed1b1-63e3-4c15-8fff-b48746d5ba44/

The ntfs.sys update mentioned in this thread is already installed on my system.

Is this something I have to worry about?

System State Backup to Critical Volume

Hello,

I have a recently deployed Server 2012 Domain Controller that I'm trying to back up the System State on. The AD DIT is located on the D: drive and I'm targeting the D: Drive for the System State Backup. Of course I got the message " You cannot use a volume that is included in the backup as a storage location"

However, I've created the AllowSSBToAnyVolume registry entry and restarted, but I'm still not able to get a SystemStateBackup (same error).

Any thoughts?

Networked Backup via PowerShell Not Working

I'm trying to use PowerShell to create a backup policy for use with Windows Server Backup on Windows Server 2008 R2.  I've written the following test script to make sure everything is working.  I've been able to confirm that my script is correct, but I'm receiving an error message from the final command.  Here is my script:

Add-PsSnapin Windows.ServerBackup
$Policy = New-WBPolicy
Set-WBSchedule -Policy $Policy -Schedule 10:30
$BackupDir = New-WBFileSpec -FileSpec C:\inetpub\Websites
Add-WBFileSpec -Policy $Policy -FileSpec $BackupDir
$SecPassword = ConvertTo-SecureString "************" -AsPlainText -Force
$Credentials = New-Object System.Management.Automation.PSCredential("BackupUserAccount", $SecPassword)
$BackupNetworkTarget = New-WBBackupTarget -NetworkPath "\\Backup1\Backup$\Web Backups\Bills Khakis" -Credential $Credentials
Add-WBBackupTarget -Policy $Policy -Target $BackupNetworkTarget
Set-WBPolicy -Policy $Policy

I've changed the username and password in this posting, but everything else is being input as-is.  None of the commands throw an error except for the last one.  After the last command is issued, the server pauses for a moment (I'm assuming it's trying to contact the destination server) and the comes back with the following error message:

Set-WBPolicy : The credentials entered are either incorrect or do not have write permissions to the remote shared folder. Please specify valid credentials.
At line:1 char:13
+ Set-WBPolicy <<<<  -Policy $Policy
    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [Set-WBPolicy], InvalidOperationException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : System.InvalidOperationException,Microsoft.Windows.ServerBackup.Commands.SetWBPolicy

The obvious answer is to say, the username and password are wrong.  However, I have checked and re-checked the credentials and they are correct.  I am able to access that share using the username and password that are in the script.  So what's going on?  Any ideas?

Hello,

I have configured shadow copies on our NAS, If i go to My Computer -> Right Click F:\ (NAS) -> Properties -> Shadow Copies -> Shadow copies has been configured on this specific drive but when I right click the a folder on the NAS -> Properties -> Previous Versions -> It displays, No Previous Versions Are Available.

Also if I browse to the folder directly from the server \\UNC\FOLDERNAME -> Right Click -> Properties -> Previous Versions, No Previous Versions Are Available Again Is Displayed.

However if i go to the properties of the F:\ Drive -> Shadow Copies -> The section "Shadow Copies of Selected Volume" is populated with shadow copies.

It is only the Previous Versions which remains blank.

Thank You For Your Help!

Cloning Windows server 2008 R2

Hello, we have recently added an oracle database to my server, my boss would prefer we keep 100% of the computers resources to the oracle database and has insisted me to build a new server and put all of my stuff on it. The problem is that I have spent hours and hours configuring that server with exchange server, VPN, file sharing services, etc., the list goes on and on. This is every Network Administrators nightmare.

Bottom line I have made a clone of the hard drive via Acronis, I thought I might get lucky and have similar hardware that the new server I built and it would boot up, I was not so lucky, as expected I got blue screened. I want this to be as simple as possible and after looking around I found there is no recovery/repair install for windows server 2008 that I could use which would just simply write over the system files and install to the new PC hardware while keeping my system settings and configuration in place.

Does anyone have some thoughts on the best way to do this? I have already done repairs to the boot sector via CMD in the recovery disk, no luck. Anyway to copy the registry over or something like that? I just want all of my system settings and configurations transferred to the new server I built.

Thanks

Shadow Copy Failure To Write

I just replaced my backup USB drive for my 2008R2 Server.  I cannot get the Server Backup program to perform a bare metal backup (or any backup for that matter).  I get the error message:  Backup failed to complete.  There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location.  Make sure that ....

My Server runs on the C: drive.  All files that need to be backed up including all Windows files are on the C: drive. The USB backup drive is E: drive.  It is a 3 Terabyte Seagate Backup Plus USB Drive.  I am a bit confused.  Is the shadow copy stored on the E: drive?  Do I have to create a partition on the E: drive for the shadow copy of the C: drive files to be stored?  The E drive is NTFS format same as the main C: drive.  I set the shadow copy size to 10000 Mg.  The drive I want the shadow copy of is the C: drive, correct?

Under disk management my C: drive has a 100Mg partition (System Reserved) and a 931Gig partition.  The E: drive shows a 2794Gig Partition.  All NTFS format.  My C drive is Raid (Mirror).  So can someone tell me what I am doing wrong or what I am missing?  My backup on the old drive was working fine but I thought it time to upgrade.  Also, since this E: drive is so huge can I partition it so that 1/2 works for bare metal backup and 1/2 works for my other backup needs?

Thanks for your help. We have a music store on the Commons Campus in the SubMixer. We are just across from Tech Link. But those guys don't work on servers ...

How to set Windows Server 2012 Backup Retention Policies???

$

I have got the W2012 Backup running, saving to a volume which is my attached external USB hard drive. It does create its own folder and stores the backups there. But, I am still having some difficulty regarding configuring it. I would like to control its retention policy (ie only store the last 7 backups) so I can keep it from filling up my disk. According to this technet link:

Windows Server Backup Overview for Windows 2012

this is supposed to be a feature of Windows backup on W2012. But, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to set these options. I can’t find any documentation on the Web that is relevant to this functionality in W2012. Could you please ask one of your Windows Server 2012 experts around there how this is done and share it with me?

Hello,

I have an image Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. As I had failure with the backups I found out this article...

KB2680097 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2680097?wa=wsignin1.0

In the meantime(2 weeks) some other servers were builts and I noticed that the iSCSIlog.dll is not changed 6.1.7600.16385 but only the msiscsi.sys changed from 6.1.7600.16385 to 6.1.7601.17514 and these servers did not failed their backups... what is doing this changed on the msiscsi.sys after SP1?

Thanks,

Dom

Cannot Restore Some Folders From Full Backup

$

Hi guys,

I have an interesting query in regards to Server 2008 Standard backup.  This is a terminal server configured with Remote Desktop licenses and Office 2007 licensing.  It has been running fine for the last few years, or so we thought.

Recently it was required to restore some files to a user data folder that went "missing" (likely user error, we all know about those haha).  However when it came time to perform the restore I had to manually swap out different backup drives until I found that particular folder available for restore.  My client then tells me that it is a very old version that I have restored and she has had to redo a lot of work to catch up.

My query is this - how exactly does a full backup work in Server 2008 Standard x64?  A full backup to me would entail backing up each file and folder every time.  I have checked the backup settings and it is configured for full backup every time rather than incremental backup.

The client has 4x USB backup drives which they rotate regularly (these drives are configured with the schedule) as well as a separate backup drive which the director plugs in once a month or so and runs a full manual backup to it.  He uses this monthly drive on all his servers so it is not part of the scheduled backups.  It was from this monthly drive that I was able to restore the folder that was missing from the scheduled backup drives.

Does this make sense to anyone, and can anyone provide assistance in what we could do to make sure every file/folder gets backed up every time?

Many thanks.

Backup for DR scenario utilizing VMs

This is for AD total disaster recovery, but the question is for general backup/restore.

To avoid the delay or difficulties of getting an identical hardware when System State restore is required, MS recommends running at least one DC on virtual box, make backups from it, and in case of disaster, restore system state to a new VM. I agree this approach.

If not using removable media, there are 3 possible target storage for system state backup: dedicated disk, dedicated volume, and a network share. My plan is to use dedicated disk or volume - when the main server is offline line, I can quickly mount the dedicate disk/volume to a new VM. However, backup made to dedicated disk/volume seems to be usable only to the server on which it was made! If I mount it to a different hardware/VM, it's not recognized by the backup program. Did I miss anything here? Can this be done? Why the limitation?

I don't really want to use network share as it requires a third server to host the share, it also means when you need to restore AD, you need to make the third server and share accessible using local account.

Windows 2008 - Backup rotation

We have a backup requirement on the servers

  • System States
  • All data in C:\

Backup destination D:\

I setup a schedule task to perform a daily backup on every night, however, i noticed that the size will keep growing in D drive, and I understand that the backup snapshot copies will be automatically rotated when the Disk is full by Windows Server backup technology.

But actually my company has a capacity requirement requirement said that every disk drive is not allow to over 90% capacity.

So, is there any way to configure the Maximum size of the rotation trigger level, or is there any way I can I keep the exactly copies (let say 7 copies only) on D drive?

I tried WBADMIN DELETE SYSTEMSTATEBACKUP -keepVersions:1 and WBADMIN DELETE SYSTEMSTATEBACKUP -deleteOldest, they are no use for me as it only make a system states backup. I need a whole system data and system states backup.

Thanks~

How does Windows Server backup work?

$

I would like to know how Windows server backup knows what files to backup.

I have 2 NAS boxes that I swap daily for offsite backup, from looking at the backup completion I can see Windows backup decides only certain files have been updated and sends them to backup causing Incremental backup as opposed to full. I also noticed this happened in 9 mins, this doesn't lead me to believe that a full comparison has occurred within the file system.

Does this mean both my NAS boxes are out of sync?

Does Windows backup use a flag to indicate what has been backed up? - therefore missing it from the next day (swapped NAS box.)

Any information would be appriciated.
