DPM 2012 Server 2008 R2 System State Backup System Writer missing

DPM cannot create a backup because Windows Server Backup (WSB) on the protected computer encountered an error (WSB Event ID: 517, WSB Error Code:  0x79E280). (ID 30229 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990ED0)

When i checked details and event logs on Windows Server Backup of targeted protected computer, it was showing a error " The Operation was stopped detailed error: The system writer is not found in the backup"

I tried the following steps also to regain the permission on C:\WINDOWS\WINSXS\FILEMAPS directory with the following commands,

Takeown /f %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\* /a
icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(RX)"
icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant "NT Service\trustedinstaller:(F)"
icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant BUILTIN\Users:(RX)

-         Stopped and started Cryptographic service

net stop cryptsvc
net start cryptsvc

Verified “System Writer” is listed or not using "vssadmin list writers" but it still invisible for me EVEN i tried the following link also

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsbackup/thread/bb760434-de80-4cb6-ae9e-bd253e4b037c

but nothing was helpful for me to get system writer visible.

I am using DPM 2012 SP1, but to keep things simple I ran the built-in windows 2012 system state backup and it fails. I have two 2012 servers with the exact same behavior.

My Environment:
OS=Server 2012
Virtual = Yes
Virtual Environment = Hyper-V 2012 Cluster

Command = wbadmin.exe start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:C:
NOTE: I can run a NTDSUTil AD Snapshot and it works.

System Partition = NTFS
OS Partition = NTFS

My ADC is crashed and I have the scenario as below

I am having windows server 2003 domain environment. My Primary DC is server 2003 and ADC on server 2008. ADC is down and cannot be restored or repaired. Is it possible to deploy another ADC with the same name. If yes then what are the steps to follow. Also mention any threats in doing so.

If I let this ADC server name as it is and deploy new server with different name. Is this a right approach/any effect on domain?

recovery Manager failed. Error code = 45D?

My Hp pavilion g series laptop fell from the table onto the carpet floor and now wont detect 2 HDDs. Out of no where the recovery manger came on after numerous reboots. I really want to save the data/files from the computer and the recovery manager gave me a choice of trying to recover pictures/videos/date etc. so i clicked on that. Now after it scans and reads all the data it starts trying to create the backup file but then i get a pop up of " Recovery Manager failed. Error code = 45D. Does anybody know what this means? Thanks!

Windows Backup - Date stamp of backups

$

The question was posed by a Backup user who saw that the backup file created has a file name that reflects the next days date.  The folder above has the correct modified date.

Looking through the forums I didn't see an answer.

Does anyone know the reasoning to this and if so can this be changed..(Script, PowerShell, Registry).

Looking forward to your help.

consequent backups much slower - why?

Hi all,

I run virtual Windows Server 2008 R2 in VMware ESXi 5.0 from local datastore (8 SAS disks in raid 60) on HP ProLiant DL380 G7 server. When i create virtual disk on the same datastore, attach it to virtual Windows Server 2008 R2 and use it as dedicated backup volume i get great speeds for first full backup, and also every consequent backup. This way full exchange backup of around 500Gb gets backed up in less than 2 hours, which I am very satisfied with. However, my fast local datastore is getting low on space and i wanted to offload backups to cheaper external storage. I took older HP ProLiant ML350 G5 with 6 SATA disks in raid 10 and exported them to ESXi (in first test over NFS, in the second over iSCSI, I'll explain right away) from FreeBSD 9.0.

Now, when i create virtual disk on NFS/iSCSI datastore and attach it to Windows Server 2008 R2 as dedicated backup volume, i noticed that first backup gets done with satisfactory speed for this kind of hardware (around 10Mb/s), and this backs up my domain controller of around 20Gb in 30 minutes. But every consequent backup takes much longer, up to 4 hours for the same amount of data, and disk activity shows no more than 1Mb/s for reads and writes.

I do not think it is disk/controller/network I/O problem, because if i start to copy one file from ESXi host to the same datastore, and the other file from the same datastore to the ESXi host while backup is running, files get copied fast and i see increase in disk read/write activity.

So, could this problem be related to some windows backup specifics? And if so, could i get an advice how to get better speeds for consequent VSS backups of Windows virtual servers to NFS/iSCSI datastores?

Thank you in advance.

Windows Server 2012 - Windows Server Backup (WSB) Antivirus Exclusions for Symantec (SYMEFA.DB) (Again)

This is a problem which appears to have resurfaced after reportedly being fixed in Symantec. The Symantec support person asked that I post a question in Technet to see if we can get a quicker answer:

Error in deletion of [C:\System Volume Information\EfaData\SYMEFA.DB] while pruning the target VHD: Error [0x80070020] The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

I've installed Windows Server 2012 Standard on the host, and am backing up a W2K12 Virtual Machine. I have deleted the previous scheduled backup and then recreated a new backup with just one virtual machine. If I delete the W:\WindowsImageBackup sub-folder (I renamed the "live" sub-folder temporarily) the VM is backed up OK the first time. If I try to back up a second time, I get the pruning error.

I have added the following exclusions:

VM locations:
C:\VHDs\*
T:\*
U:\*
V:\*

VM Extensions:
vfd
vhd
vhdx

WSB drive:
W:\*

DPM 2012 exclusions:
C:\Program Files\System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\bin\DPMRA.exe
C:\Program Files\System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\Temp\MTA\*
C:\Program Files\System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\XSD\*
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\csc.exe

The DPM Services were disabled and stopped.

AntiVirus: Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition Version 12.1.2100.2093
(12.1-RU2-MP1) This version was supposed to have a fix for all this.
Symantec re-installed this with me with only the "Virus and Spyware Protection" components included and double checked the exclusions list.
Disabling Symantec is not enough - it has to be uninstalled in order for the backup to work again.

The test virtual machine was stopped at the time of the backup and has one fixed size VHDx.

The Symantec Support person was hoping someone from Microsoft might be able to advise if there were any other exclusions that could be considered.

Strangely, this has been working fine for the past couple of weeks. It started acting up once I attempted backing up a VM with BitLocker encrypted VHDx's. (Not this test VM). Don't know if this was just a coincidence or if there is any connection. I have also been using Virtual Floppies, Differencing Disks, and Snapshots on other VMs.

When watching Resource Monitor, during the backup, it looks like ALL the virtual machine VHDs are opened and at least partially read, even though they are not running and not included in the backup.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks,
Bob.

Computer\System Proctection\System State Replica is inconsistent

The replica of System Protection Computer\System Protection on ABC is inconsistent with the protected data source. Hi,

Since some time now i have not been able to use the Windows server backup tool anymore.

I cant really tell since when this started, but for all i know the windows server backup service worked fine.

I even created a backup schedule and it made some backups.

I am running this windows server 2012 Standard at home with just a couple of basic applications.

The server is used to host several websites with IIS, it manages my local DHCP and is used for locally shared storage.

There are no other security applications installed yet, because i am trieing to get rid of this error first. (so no symantec or whatever)

Since some time i am having trouble opening the windows backup snap-in.

When ever i trie to open the Windows server backup snap-in i get the following error:

A fatal error occurred during a Windows Server Backup snap-in (Wbadmin.msc) operation.

Error details: The Windows Server Backup service has stopped.

Close Wbadmin.msc and then restart it.

Whenever this error occures the folowing error is show in the windows logbook:

I tried to find simmilar cases over the internet but i cant seem to find a solution for the problem.

I already tried to remove and reinstall the Windows server backup feature, this did not help.

Is there anyone here that can help me find a solution for this problem ?

Thank you !

We've been facing issues with running "System State Backup" in Tivoli backup toom. The "WMI Writer" is NO LISTED under VSS writers, however NT backup is successful. But unable to take system state through Tivoli Backup ( TSM ) , it requires WMI Writer. We are running a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise 64bit Edition.

Is there any way to recreate WMI writer ? Please help me with some suggestion(s).

Hi Team,

I just need to clarify some information about RODC .

1. Will RODC work without DC when the last replication made successfully from dc ?

2. will client can able to login to domain using RODC if  DC fails?

3 If DC goes failed and client is login to domain then logon server will show either DC or RODC  ?
