System image restore process failed - WSE2012

$

I need some help. My system drive failed and I'm forced to attempt a recovery using the server backup located on my backup volume. Using a bootable USB stick, I successfully boot in to the installation media, navigate to the repair screen, and select System Restore. The software attempts to find a suitable backup, which it does and recommends the backup dated 2/5/2013 (about a week ago). I click NEXT, select the EXCLUDE drives to exclude those drives that are part of my storage pool (I've also not selected anything to exclude. Here's my selection:

  • Disk 4 - USB STICK w/Install Media
  • Disk 5 - NEW REPLACEMENT DRIVE (fresh)
  • Disk 6 - Storage Space
  • Disk 7 - Storage Space

It reports that Disk 3 is automatically excluded because it contains the backup. So far all this seems in order.

I proceed to click NEXT to get to the final recovery options page. In addition to the server name and date of the backup, I'm presented with the following:

  • \\?\Volume{824f6b2f-3b3a-11e2-93ed-806e6f6e6963}, C:

Upon clicking FINISH and receiving the warning that all drives will be reformatted and partitioned, I'm presented with a dialog box in about 5 seconds that states the following:

  • The system image restore failed
  • An error occurred while performing the recovery operation. Details (link)
  • Clicking the link presents me with another dialog box that shows various options for ensuring the drive is connected (which it is, Disk 5) and it asks that all USB drives are removed. However, if you remove the installation media, you can't continue anyway.

Here are my questions:

  1. What on in the name of Microsoft is going on here -- has anyone run into this problem before? According to the instructions, this should be super easy. I've reviewed the following: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj593197.aspx
  2. Should I disconnect the Storage Space drives all together, leaving the new system drive, the backup drive and the USB stick and try again?
  3. Should I install a new copy of Windows Server (with storage drives unplugged) and then attempt to restore.
  4. If the backup was corrupt, wouldn't I get a different error message?
  5. What other options can I try?

I've already made a simple volume on the NEW drive as I read elsewhere that solved someone with a Windows 7 recovery that sounded the same. This did not work for me. I've tried to remove the USB drive, and then process complains and says it can't find the path to the install media.

My server is headless and DVD-less, so USB is the only way I'm going to get this to install. I've also already tried moving my USB stick into just about every USB port available.

Finally, this is a Gigabyte  UEFI motherboard.

Someone smarter than me please step up and show me the light! I can't believe the restore process is failing like this.

Windows Server 2012 R2 becomes unresponsive for about 20-30 minutes after Windows Server backup kicks off

When the backup kicks off at 7PM the disk i/o goes through the roof and the system becomes totally unresponsive. RDP access times out and network pings even fail. This lasts for about 20 minutes before I can rdp into the system and I can see that the backup is running. Almost no progress is made during the outage but the backup then run successfully like nothing out of the ordinary happened. I have tried it with the full bare metal restore option and simply backing up the C drive. I am backing up to a network share. It is an Exchange 2013 server in a single server environment. During the lockout period there are errors logged by MSExchangeRepl (Id 4402 & 4404) and ExchangeStoreDB (Id 218 & 244) all having to do with access to the data on the hard drives. This is a vm on a ProxMox server so I am able to see that the disk reads are off the charts. Any suggestions? If you need additional information I would be happy to post more. Thanks for your help.

I am trying to create a system image backup under Windows 8.1 Windows Backup is unable to find a backup device with error (0x80070003). No drives are shown under "On a hard disk" and select <Refresh> gives the same error.

A LaCie 1Tb external harddisk is connected to the PC and formatted as an NTFS drive. The hard disk is visable under Harddisk Management and shows up under Explorer mapped as Drive D:

Server backup fails with error code 0x80780049 - Essentials 2012 R2

I have a fairly new 2012 R2 server with Essentials role installed. I just finished setting it up exactly as I like with clients connected and backing up to a storage space on the server. I bought a new eternal USB 3.0 HDD and just set up the server backup. I used the wizard in the Dashboard to create the backup job, excluding only the storage spaces drive. When I attempt to run the backup job, it always fails with error code 0x80780049 in the event log.  I have run chkdsk on C drive with no issues found.  During the backup wizard, I allowed it to format the new external drive.  If I watch the job run, it will get to 18%, and then jump to 100% and then say unsuccessful.  After looking at other posts on TechNet, I have tried to shrink the drive, recreate the job, and even uncheck all but drive C.  No change.  I also tried running the job via elevated command line, "wbadmin start backup".  When it reached 18%, it would repeat that output several times then fail.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

VSS Issues - Information Store (2928) Shadow copy instance 1 aborted.

Hi

Our configuration is

Server 2008 SP2

Exchange 2007 SP3 Update Roll-up 13

We are trying to use a third party backup solution (Veeam) and when we attempt a backup we get the following error in the Application log

Event ID 2007, ESE

Information Store (2928) Shadow copy instance 1 aborted.

The number is brackets changes we have also had

Information Store (3016) Shadow copy instance 2 aborted.

After this if I do "vssadmin list writers" it shows all 9 writers as State: [9] Failed, Last error: No error.

If I reboot the server and then try Windows Server Backup this completes and clears the log files from the First Storage Group folder.

I have only seen Hotfixes for this error when on Server 2003, Veeam are insinuating it is a Microsoft issue.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Currently around 263GB free space of a 349GB volume so that shouldn't be an issue.

Tried various batch files that stp services register various DLL's and then start the VSS again these did not work.

This machine is a VM on Server 2012 R2

Any feedback appreciated, hopefully this is the correct forum I have selected, but please move if better suited elsewhere.

Cheers Chris

Good day IT Folks,

Recently I've configured a FreeNAS and integrate it to my domain based on WS 2008R2. I want to place my backups file over a network share on FreeNAS, but it keeps asking me for a user credential. I've tried using windows credential and no luck. When using FreeNAS account, a dialog box is telling me that the computer doesn't recognize it. May I ask if there's something to get around this trouble?

Thanks,

Jes Yang

Unable to back up 8.1 tablet to home server 2011

I have a Dell Venue Pro 11 (model 5130 tablet running 8.1 32 bit fully patched) which I am trying to back up using Windows Home Server 2011.  I can start the backup but it fails repeatedly.

The server reports "Backup did not complete because a problem interrupted the connection to the server"

The event log on the tablet reports "Reason: ClientVSSProblem, SystemString[]

Event Id 514, Qualifiers 53247, Level 2 Task 2, Keywords 0x80000000000000

The Tablet and the Server are in the same workgroup, the tablet is setup to permit access by everyone (with full control) in the workgroup.

When setting up the backup on the server, the C drive is recognized, but the D (microsd card) is not recognized by the server

The backup starts, reports 1%, then fails.

The Tablet is running plugged in with the power plan set to never turn off when plugged in.

I have a desktop running 8.1 which the server backs up daily, so I doubt that the problem lies with the server software.

Any ideas on how to correct this problem so that I can back up the Tablet?

WBADMIN Task Removes Old Backups

On our 2012 server that runs VM's we perform a backup three times a week as well as replicating the VM's to another server.  Most of the time this works fine.  But once in a while (a few times in the last month) it doesn't.  <o:p></o:p>

A couple weeks ago in the middle of the night there was a power outage that caused the servers to restart.  This didn't impact or organization at all, but it happened in the middle of a backup.  That backup failed.  The next scheduled backup failed because it thought another backup operation was running (there wasn't).  I manually started a backup and that worked fine, except it took about three times as long to run and it removed all previous backups from the backup drive.  Our backups ran fine for the next couple weeks until one randomly took about three times as long as a normal one and also removed all previous backups.  <o:p></o:p>

There were no errors in the event viewer for those backups.  The backup drive is never more than half full.  It always has at least a TB of free space for a backup file that is about 600-800 GB.  It normally saves weeks to months of old backups.  My wbadmin command is below.  <o:p></o:p>

START BACKUP -backupTarget:H: -allCritical -systemState -quiet

Thanks for the help.

Setting up of Windows backup failing

$

I've added a 2TB USB drive (Western Digital MyBook) to a new 2012 Essentials server to allow Server Backup to perform a secondary (non-cloud) backup. The setup routine is failing during (or immediately after) formatting with the message "The system cannot find the file specified". Sometimes, when I try to repeat the process, I get an error in a snap-in of the MMC (blbmmc.dll). Where should I be looking to troubleshoot this please?

Event ID 51 on Windows Server 2012 R2 during backup

Hi all,

During backup operations, on my Windows Server 2012 R2 (Hyper-v role installed) I find this warning in Event Log:

Event ID 51: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk5\DR43 during a paging operation.

How could I solve this issue? or Could I safely ignore this message?

Just for information, before latest OS Update Rollup installation, we also found the event below:

Event ID 157: Disk 5 has been surprise removed.

Thanks a lot,

David
