Problem with partion resulting in "One of the source volumes specified has an invalid format and cannot be protected using Windows Backup. Only volumes formatted with NTFS/ReFS can be protected."

We have two new Windows Servers 2012 R2 that I'm trying to set backups on using a script. When I used the -allCritical switch, I get the error specified in the subject. When I look at the partition information using diskpart, I see a 2048 MB partition with no drive letter labeled as System that is FAT32. I was never prompted to my recollection of what file system to format the partition with. Is it safe to assign this partition a letter, convert to NTFS, and then remove the drive letter?

Thanks

DPM 2012 has run out of disk space

Hi,

I'm relatively new to DPM and have run into a problem.  It appears that the DPM server has run out of disk space and has the following error:

DPM has run out of free space on the recovery point volume and will fail synchronization for H:\ on SRVFS02.FILECLUSTER.osfc.ac.uk in order to prevent existing recovery points from being deleted. (ID 30195 Details: Internal error code: 0x80990AB2)

Is there a way of freeing up some disk.  It appears that it allocated space which has run out but the disk space is fine.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Windows Server Backup fail

Hi,

I had config a Windows Server Backup, however it was fail in every backup time. in Event Log, shown the error code  '2155348010' (cannot create a backup file.). I had search this error code on Google, said that the backup destination drive cannot other than 512 sector size. And I checked the drive is 4098 physical sector size. How can I format it as 512 sector size or 512e??? I tried using command 'format x: /a:512', but it say cannot format the drive. Since, the sector size specific is too large. Any method able to format my drive to 512e?

My drive is Seagage Expansion Desktop 3TB Model:SRD00F2

Many Thanks

Hey, i've got a file server running, every user got it's own storage. Is it possible to make a backup of this disk to different location without VSS?

It's just needed because what if an user deletes a very important file accidently... then he needs the IT group to be able to recover it. Not himself. that's what i had in mind.

Thanks.

Add driver package issue

Need you bright minds since I can not get any future.
I'm about to set up my WDS server for windows 7 deployment/capture
I can not test the capture step since I can not get through the final steps to add NIC driver for Realtek LAN at a Shuttle Slim PC XH81V  amd DS437 with an Realtek 8111G
But get the error:
windows deployment services could not add some of the packages to the server
Details say that typicial issue could be unsigned driver etc.

The drivres It look okay and signed, so I really have no idea of what's the issue

suspect a bad download or corrupt unpacked file archive.
I have tried to download both from the shuttle as well as directly from Realtek, extracted with 7zip. same result.
The driver:
LAN_REALTEK_RTL8111G_W7-64_W7-32

Any idea on how a can get it proceed, or something I've overlooked in WDS?

Tried to insert link and photo in this tred. but got the message:
ody text cannot contain images or links until we are able to verify your account.
Maybe a can ad it later when verifyed

Restoring to Different Hardware

I read somewhere that a Windows Backup on Server 2012 R2 could restore a system image on dissimilar hardware, however, I can't find any indication in the backup program of how to do that.  I haven't had to at this point, but unfortunately it could happen that after a disaster, I wouldn't be able to replace my server with the exact same hardware.

Can anyone tell me if what I read is true, and if so, how is it done?

wbadmin backup fails on server 2012 std , reporting Drive Cannot Find the Sector Requested

I've recently installed two 2012 servers on HP ML350p Gen8.

Both giving the same error while trying to backup (system state , BMR and c:) , "the drive cannot find the sector requested".

What i already tried (without result):

* increase the system volume bij 1MB or 10MB ,since this seems to be a common fix for this issue-> giving me a "Parameter Error"

*removing /adding the multiple disks again via wbadmin enable backup -addtarget:[id]

*formatting the disks.

*removing the backup schedule and re-apply a new one

*chkdsk run on all disks

Can somebody advice a solution / cause for this behaviour? Below the error description.

Thx in advance!

Windows 2008 R2 Sp1 backup failing with Event Id 517 and Error Code: 2147942487

$

We have a windows share that we dump multiple windows backup images from our servers.   We have 1 server consistently failing when performing a manual "Backup Once...." operation.

The error message in the Windows Backup gui is: "Failed The parameter is incorrect"

The event log shows an error of 517 with the message: "

The backup operation that started at '‎2015‎-‎01‎-‎12T14:25:20.681861800Z' has failed with following error code '2147942487' (One or more arguments are invalid). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

"

The strange part is when we choose a different location to accept the backup we have success.  The backup starts, but fails between 1-6 GB transferred.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

There is only one backup job (it was created with GUI):

=====

wbadmin enable backup
wbadmin 1.0 - Backup command-line tool
(C) Copyright 2004 Microsoft Corp.

The scheduled backup settings:

Volumes in backup: V1(C:),V2(F:),D2(D:),D1(E:)
Location to store backup: MSFT Virtual HD  Multi-Path Disk Device
Times of day to run backup: 04:00

I have just one backup job. This job is scheduled for a single run per day.

The associated Task Scheduler job was not modified.

There is no another backup or recovery operation running.

How can I get rid of this error?

wbadmin path specified does not exist

wbadmin is failing to recognise the iscsi attached disk drive as a valid disk to include in windows server backup.

The error returned is:

  • The path specified by '\\?\volume{cbb973dc-e5d9-4c4e-9a39-ca96dannnnnn}\' was not found.  The specified file path does not exist or was not on a locally attached disk.

Well it isn't on a locally attached disk it is on a remote iscsi disk, is this saying that windows backup cannot backup data on an iscsi attached disk or is there some alternative way of referring to an iSCSI disk that I should be using instead?

wbadmin get disks returns:

  • Disk name: LIO-ORG md_block1a SCSI Disk Device
    Disk number: 3
    Disk identifier: {cbb973dc-e5d9-4c4e-9a39-ca96dannnnnn}

Has anybody had an issue with System State Backups on a Dell PowerEdge R510 Server running Server 2008 R2?

Hi,

We have recently had issues running system state backups on our 2008 R2 Domain Controllers.  They are running on Dell PowerEdge R510 Physical Hardware.  Whenever you initiate a system state backup,  the Domain Controller becomes unresponsive forcing us to physically reboot it.   Nothing in the Event logs or the Dell Open Management Hardware Software indicates issues with Phyiscal disks but we can always replicate the issue by starting the system state backup.

The system state backup is initialted as a batch file that runs as a scheduled task.   the commands run are as follows:

WBADMIN START SYSTEMSTATEBACKUP -backupTarget:[drive letter] -quiet

We have 4 Domain Controllers with identical disk configurations.  When the DCs were setup I confirmed the system state backups were working but the issue started occuring sometime in Dec 2014.  We are going to run the Dell Hardware Update Utility to update the RAID, BIOS, Firmware updates but Has anyone experienced a similar issue that may have been triggerd by a Microsoft Patch?

Thanks,

Kevin C.

Incremental only backup on a shadow copy enabled shared volume when I want full

I'm stuck.

On a 2012 r2 server we have a volume with shadow copies enabled to a separate volume.

Using Windows Backup I want to do a full backup and have selected that and changed the 'Configure Performance Settings' to 'Full Backup' for the volume.  Yet no matter how I try it only reports as having done an Incremental Backup and the amount of data reported backed up up supports this.  Is this a known behavior for volumes with Shadow Copies enabled?  Can I force the backup to full?

Thanks for any help!

Backup Fails after several successful days - errors "Device is not ready" & "The System cannot find the path specified"

$

Well I am back again, with another backup issue. After fixing one issue with the backup failing after a reboot, I have encountered another which is starting to cause me a lot of headaches.

The setup is thus - the backups run on a host machine running Windows Server 2012, this hosts three VM's (1x Server 2012 and 2x2008 Since the 19th of December a single backup drive has been attached for the backups (not ideal but the company had closed for the holidays) up until the 26th these backups were working flawlessly.

On the 26th the backup completed with warnings, transferring a good 90% of the data to the backup (2/3 VMs). On the 27th it transferred a bit more at around 95% (2/3 VMs).  On the 28th, it didn't completely backup a single VM.

On the 28th this error appeared in the event logs and after checking in the snap-in the same errors appear on the warning days as the errored day.

---------------------

The backup operation that started at '‎2014‎-‎12‎-‎28T20:30:09.774946400Z' has failed with following error code '0x80780049' (None of the items included in backup were backed up.). Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

----------------------

Thanks in advance/
