Windows Server 2012 R2 becomes unresponsive for about 20-30 minutes after Windows Server backup kicks off

When the backup kicks off at 7PM the disk i/o goes through the roof and the system becomes totally unresponsive. RDP access times out and network pings even fail. This lasts for about 20 minutes before I can rdp into the system and I can see that the backup is running. Almost no progress is made during the outage but the backup then run successfully like nothing out of the ordinary happened. I have tried it with the full bare metal restore option and simply backing up the C drive. I am backing up to a network share. It is an Exchange 2013 server in a single server environment. During the lockout period there are errors logged by MSExchangeRepl (Id 4402 & 4404) and ExchangeStoreDB (Id 218 & 244) all having to do with access to the data on the hard drives. This is a vm on a ProxMox server so I am able to see that the disk reads are off the charts. Any suggestions? If you need additional information I would be happy to post more. Thanks for your help.
