ISCSI can't disable shadow copy's and disk space errors

$

hi ,

its the first time i use technet for a question , most of the time the answer is just here :) , but not this time ...

i found partial answers on my question  , but i'm still in the dark.

this is my problem :

for our customers we use a backup server with the ISCSI software target application of windows.

these machines that we backup , are virtual machines running on windows server 2012 with Hyper-v

the machines are getting backed up with Windows Server Backup , point is we are not ussing any external software.

so the backup solution we are using is al windows software.

now,  everything worked great for a few weeks , but since a few days i get the "not enough disk space error" on all of our machines.

so the first thing i did to troubleshoot was giving the backup disk (ISCSI) a drive letter and checked the properties , indeed the disk is "full"

then i looked inside and looked at the properties of the backup folder and then it all started.

for example the target disk is 100 GB , the backup folder inside is 70 GB , so there's 30 GB free , but yet the properties say i only have 500 Mb left ...

so after some searching i noticed ,  even as the shadow copy's is not enabled , it is using up 30 GB of my HDD for shadow copy's ...

after some googling i came to the answer that Windows Server backup is using shadow copy's as the methode for incremental backups ...

fine by me , really , thats not the issue , the issue is that windows "thinks" it can still backup because there is 30 Gb free "since only 70 is used" but in fact the disk is full ...

first time i had the issue my solution was manually changing the settings of shadow copy to force it to use only a amount of data , but windows overrulles the settings and continues anyway with filling up data , and i lost my retention in the proces :)

can anyone give me a logical explenation about this problem , its important that i know how windows server backup "thinks" becus we have allot of customers using this and i want to be shure that backups are working perfectly ...

if i can give extra information to help analyse the problem , you just have to ask :)

mising partition after system state backup

l have AD and file server installed in my win2008 r2 server. I have 1 harddisk with 4 partitions c:100GB-system d:100GB,e:150GB,f:150GB for storage folders.  Assuming my HD is 500 GB ( # s are not exact but this is how i partitioned it )

I installed server backup then started the system state backup and Drive E: as target. after the backup error "parameter is not found" drive E: and F: disappeared and then Drive C: extends its allocation to 270GB and Drive F: 195 GB. What happened? How can I restore my files? I have used partition manager / recovery Software. Please help me .

Thanks,Ka

Why are Hyper-V Snapshots in Windows Server 2012 not restored in Hyper-V Manager?

$

  • Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Host.
  • W2K12 VM with two drive VHDx files, one Snapshot -> four files altogether.
  • Standard WSB backup overnight.
  • Delete the VM and Restore.
  • WSB Restore restores all four files, but says "The selected virtual machine has no snapshots".
  • The VM's Settings are pointing the IDE and SCSI files to the snapshot files.
  • The VM boots Ok and the snapshot file content is there.

Is this normal?
Shouldn't restoring the VM also restore the snapshot info to the manager (I've tried restoring Host Component, etc.)?
Is there some way to add the ability to see the snapshots in the manager?

I  assume we can manually merge the files via the manager or discard the snapshots via editing the VM settings.

Thanks,
Bob.

Server 2003 Backup problems

Running Windows Server 2003.  Have been using the Backup utility to make daily & weekly backups to Seagate external hard drive.  Tried to restore a file today and get the message that the requested backup file cannot be found.  The file looks like its there in the backup (I can click the check box next to it) but restore says it cannot be found.  i've tried different tapes and different files, and I know I have restored files before.  Help!!  I'm not connected to the internet on the server either.

Acive Directory server data backup on LTO 5 tape drive

Dear Sir,

We have Windows server 2008 R2 installed on AD server. It has LTO 5 tape drive interfaced to it to take a backup of network data stored on AD with planning of standard online backup application (like Symantec Backup EXec 2012)  to be installed on server. But due to some reasons we dropped the plan. Still we need to take a backup of network data. Do we have any kind of work around solution with built in windows features to take a backup or any free download tool / application which can support this OS to take a backup on LTO 5 tape drive.

Thanks & regards,

Milind Kolambe

wbadmin backup fails on server 2012 std , reporting Drive Cannot Find the Sector Requested

$

I've recently installed two 2012 servers on HP ML350p Gen8.

Both giving the same error while trying to backup (system state , BMR and c:) , "the drive cannot find the sector requested".

What i already tried (without result):

* increase the system volume bij 1MB or 10MB ,since this seems to be a common fix for this issue-> giving me a "Parameter Error"

*removing /adding the multiple disks again via wbadmin enable backup -addtarget:[id]

*formatting the disks.

*removing the backup schedule and re-apply a new one

*chkdsk run on all disks

Can somebody advice a solution / cause for this behaviour? Below the error description.

Thx in advance!

Can you manage or backup remote servers?

$

The Windows Server Backup page on TechNet says "You can use Windows Server Backup to create and manage backups for the local computer or a remote computer.

I've looked all through the fairly spartan backup options on Windows Server 2012 and I cannot find any way to backup or manage backups of a remote server. Can someone shed some light on this? Is it possible to backup a remote server, or even manage the backups on a remote server from the Windows Server Backup interface?

I'm looking at the possibility of ditching BackUp Exec 10d(!) in favor of Windows Server Backup, since we don't need anything special.

Hyper-V WBADMIN Backup Enumeration of the files failed

SO I'm trying (and was successful for a week or so) to backup all the Virtual Machines on ,y Server 2012 Hyper-V host using a WBADMIN Script like this

WBADMIN START BACKUP -backupTarget:\\Server\Share\DayofWeek\ -hyperv: "9765f02f-042e-4d72-9fd8-13faededa93d","8f4e8672-2632-43b2-b83e-ed7e63ec0ecb" -Quiet

However it fails with event log ID 519 - The backup operation that started at '‎2013‎-‎06‎-‎10T21:00:08.077677000Z' has failed to back up volume(s) ''. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.

And the backup log says

Thanks

Transferring AD backups across the network

Due to capacity issues at the site in which AD backups are taken we are needing to look at ways of being able to retain the same number of backups by moving them to another location across the network. Are there ways to compress and encrypt the backups before copying them or products that can compress, encrypt and copy on a scheduled basis ?  Was also looking at possibility of using deduplication on a 2012 server in order to reduce the amount of data being sent over the network.

System state backup fails

Hi,

I've a Windows Server 2008 R2 which host an Oracle database.
After upgrading Oracle to the latest version Windows Server Backups fails with error: "System Writer not found in backup".
Application Event Log show Event ID 517 with description "Error code 2155347997 (Operation aborted before completion)".
"vsstrace" shows no errors.
"diskshadow list writers" shows something interesting:

It looks to me Oracle registered "d:\oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_2\bin" as System Component.
But that folder does not exist. D: is actually the CD-ROM drive...

Can I remove "d:\oracle\product\11.2.0\dbhome_2\bin" from the System State file list?

The official position seems to be "no, reinstall the application" which I wuold really like to avoid...

  Corrado

Folder Redirection or ROBOCOPY profile

$

What is the best practice for protecting a domain users profile behind the scenes?

Using a logon script to robocopy the profile over to the server?

Or using folder redirection?

I have run into issues with both, like a handy red X over files with folder redirection or GPO's failing to run on Vista/7 machines, or even sync issues.  With these issues, at least the end user knows something is wrong and to contact me.

With the logon batch file (which I did not create, a friend did) I have seen it either not run on Windows 7/ Vista because of UAC.  Or just stop functioning.  The only way I know it doesn't work, is checking the log file it creates to see the most recent date.  The user has no clue it stopped working and I would have to manually check each workstation.

So what is the best practice here?  What do you do to protect user data?

Folder Redirection Red X, 2008 R2, Windows 7

I am using Server 2008 R2, I have a flakey issue with folder redirection.  I am trying to determine if this is a software issue or hardware.

I have a few workstations running windows 7 that run into a red X problem.  I simply have docs, desktop redirected to the server then the server backs up. During the day the Windows 7 Machines will have a red x over some files and folders and they will be slightly grayed out.  The user cannot open those files or folders.  The simple fix is reboot the workstation, everything goes back to normal.  But this is annoying if they have to do this multiple times a day.  This workstation is brand new, I just installed it a month or so ago and that is when the issue started happening.  It's predecessor was an eight year old XP machine that was slow but worked fine with the folder redirection from the sbs 2003 server to the new server 2008 r2.

The hardware issue possibility is that they are on the top floor of a building, the roof caved in a few months back and soaked the router and switches with rain water.  Everything seemed to be ok, they did not want to invest in new equipment since it was "working".

I noticed after I installed a new AP shortly after the waterfall the wireless clients lose their internet connection sometimes. It is erratic and seems to only happen when I am not there, i can never recreate the issue when I am onsite.  I have yet to move the AP to a different Ethernet jack and retest, but that is for another day.
