Windows Server 2012 - Windows Server Backup (WSB) Antivirus Exclusions for Symantec (SYMEFA.DB) (Again)

$

This is a problem which appears to have resurfaced after reportedly being fixed in Symantec. The Symantec support person asked that I post a question in Technet to see if we can get a quicker answer:

Error in deletion of [C:\System Volume Information\EfaData\SYMEFA.DB] while pruning the target VHD: Error [0x80070020] The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Caption     : Backup Using Saved State\VM-Test

*-----------------------------*

I've installed Windows Server 2012 Standard on the host, and am backing up a W2K12 Virtual Machine. I have deleted the previous scheduled backup and then recreated a new backup with just one virtual machine. If I delete the W:\WindowsImageBackup sub-folder (I renamed the "live" sub-folder temporarily) the VM is backed up OK the first time. If I try to back up a second time, I get the pruning error.

I have added the following exclusions:

VM locations:
C:\VHDs\*
T:\*
U:\*
V:\*

VM Extensions:
vfd
vhd
vhdx

WSB drive:
W:\*

DPM 2012 exclusions:
C:\Program Files\System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\bin\DPMRA.exe
C:\Program Files\System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\Temp\MTA\*
C:\Program Files\System Center 2012\DPM\DPM\XSD\*
C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\csc.exe

The DPM Services were disabled and stopped.

AntiVirus: Symantec Endpoint Protection Small Business Edition Version 12.1.2100.2093
(12.1-RU2-MP1) This version was supposed to have a fix for all this.
Symantec re-installed this with me with only the "Virus and Spyware Protection" components included and double checked the exclusions list.
Disabling Symantec is not enough - it has to be uninstalled in order for the backup to work again.

The test virtual machine was stopped at the time of the backup and has one fixed size VHDx.

The Symantec Support person was hoping someone from Microsoft might be able to advise if there were any other exclusions that could be considered.

Strangely, this has been working fine for the past couple of weeks. It started acting up once I attempted backing up a VM with BitLocker encrypted VHDx's. (Not this test VM). Don't know if this was just a coincidence or if there is any connection. I have also been using Virtual Floppies, Differencing Disks, and Snapshots on other VMs.

When watching Resource Monitor, during the backup, it looks like ALL the virtual machine VHDs are opened and at least partially read, even though they are not running and not included in the backup.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks,
Bob.

Why are Hyper-V Snapshots in Windows Server 2012 not restored in Hyper-V Manager?

$

  • Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Host.
  • W2K12 VM with two drive VHDx files, one Snapshot -> four files altogether.
  • Standard WSB backup overnight.
  • Delete the VM and Restore.
  • WSB Restore restores all four files, but says "The selected virtual machine has no snapshots".
  • The VM's Settings are pointing the IDE and SCSI files to the snapshot files.
  • The VM boots Ok and the snapshot file content is there.

Is this normal?
Shouldn't restoring the VM also restore the snapshot info to the manager (I've tried restoring Host Component, etc.)?
Is there some way to add the ability to see the snapshots in the manager?

I  assume we can manually merge the files via the manager or discard the snapshots via editing the VM settings.

Thanks,
Bob.

System State Backup does not work. "system writer is not found in the backup". "vssadmin list writers" does not list the system writer

This same error has been appearing in forums for about 5 years now!  Resolutions vary from altering permissions on folders as described in this article:-  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2009272   and theres even a solution which involves performing an in-place upgrade like this:-

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsbackup/thread/5a637292-fca7-4b8b-94a3-cbceda96d58e

I have nothing wrong with the permissions under c:\windows\winsxs

The cryptsvc stops and starts successfully but the system writer still does not appear in the list from vssadmin list writers.

This means I can not backup the system state.  "wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backuptarget:d:   also fails.

Since the problem is not fixed by the permissions changes and service restarts, the only other option appears to be an in-place upgrade.

Since I have WindowsServer-2012 fully patched and the problem appears to have been successfully ported over theres nothing to upgrade to.

How do I get out of this situation?

Windows Server Backup - Exclude Folders with filter (2012)

Hello there!

I am searching fo a way to backup a folder with all it's subdirectories except the directories called "source".

Windows Server Backup supports exclusions based on filters for file name extensions, but i haven't found a case where folder or specific filenames have been excluded.

- Is there a way to do that with built in features?

- Or is it better to use a powershell script in combination with robocopy?

- Third party utilities would be my last resort.

I am thankful for any hints and suggestions into the right direction!

Time zone of System Image Recovery

Hi all,

My server OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 (EN). But I set the time zone as China time (UTC +8:00) in the Windows already. One day, I wanted to recover my system in PE. So I inserted the Windows Server 2008 R2 disc into the DVD-ROM, and then booted from the DVD. Then I set the Time and currency format to Chinese (Simplified, PRC), but the time zone didn't chang to China time (GMT +8:00) automatically, it was still showing GMT -8:00 (PST). Can I fix it?

Thanks,

Windows Server 2012 Backup Not Doing Incremental

$

I'm running Windows Server 2012, with my "C" drive on a small, 60 GB  SSD and a large, 3 TB drive as my "D" drive, with two VMs on "D" (only one VM runs, the other's turned off all the time).  In the past I've had no problem using Windows Server Backup to do an initial Full backup of all drives, with scheduled daily incremental backups, to another 3 TB HDD.  However, recently I formatted the backup 3 TB drive and started over (dumb thing to do).  After the initial, full backup (System Reserved, Bare Metal Recovery, C, D, Hyper-V, Virtual Machines), all subsequent backups do System Reserved and Local C as incremental, but the large "D" drive, 3 TB HDD (with about 2 TB of data on it) is always done as Full, and it takes six hours.  It used to do "D" as incremental and would take a few minutes, depending on how much data changed that day.

I have tried configuring Performance Settings to Fast, which is supposed to backup changes only, yet each night a full backup of "D" is made.  I've also tried configuring Performance Settings as Custom, and forcing each drive to be Incremental in the drop-down box next to each drive, but it makes no difference:  "D" is always a full backup.  The time taken isn't the biggest problem -- the biggest problem is that I have no backup history.  A file deleted yesterday is gone for good without incremental backups.

Does anyone have any idea why Windows Server Backup will not backup my 3 TB "D" drive (with 2 TB of data) incrementally?  I used to be able to hold over a dozen backup copies before, now all I get is yesterday's data.

Recover Deleted Daily snapshots (Windows Server 2008 Backup software)

I am currently using Windows Server 2008 built-in backup software to backup one server nightly. The backup USB hard drive got full and Windows Server Backup software deleted daily snapshots before May 15. I need to restore some folder prior to May 15.

Is there a way to recover deleted snapshots prior to May 15.

Thanks--Nate

Is there any documentation for the details included in Backup Events 4 and 14 on Windows Server 2012?

There are several dozen fields and I can't find any information on how to interpret them.  (Especially things like "State='14' PreviousState='17' FullBackupReason='10'.")

Backup on Windows Server 2012 Foundations

$

Hello,

I've 3 TB external drive which I want to use for local backup on Windows Server 2012 Foundations. I'd like to know if Windows Backup has a capability to write to this drive since the drive has 4096 data sectors. The problem I ran into with Windows Server 2008 was that it couldn't write to any new drives because it was designed to write to drives with 512 sectors or 512e (emulator) sectors. All new drives made now use 4096 and from my research there only had full of internal drives made by Western Digital have 512e and they're legacy and won't be made much longer.

Thank you for your input

Check a backup of specific files/folders with wbadmin

$

Hello everyone!

I would be glad if someone could help me to clarify if it's possible to check a backup availability of specific files or folders with wbadmin tool.

For example, I'm able to restore some directory from a backup (assuming that I already know that it persists there):

wbadmin start recovery -version:06/02/2013-13:37 -itemType:File -items:C:\Users\Public\Music -recursive

But is it possible to check if this directory ("C:\Users\Public\Music" in my example) were included to one or another backup version? If it is, please let me know how exactly.

Thank you!

Hi,

I have a virtual Windows server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition and I´ve installed Windows Server Backup in order to perform regular one-time backups that can be used to perform a bare metal recovery, also I want to add a new virtual disk as a dedicated disk to store backups; my understanding is that the disk is reformatted and is not possible see it from the Windows explorer, my question is how can I move that backup outside the virtual server if the disk is not available except from the Windows Server Backup tool ? Any suggestions will be welcome.

The virtual Windows server 2008 R2 is running on Oracle VM Server.

Thanks in advance.

Server Backup - System State Backup Canceled

$

I have a Server 2008 R2 machine that has been backing up just fine for months. All of a Sudden it's showing a warning each night. Looking at the details it shows all volumes backed up successfully, and backs up the BMR as well. Beside System State is shows this: "Backup Canceled. System state backup was canceled"

It was not canceled manually so something else must be going on. I looked at the log files under %windir%\logs\WindowsServerBackup and the backup_error-date is completely blank. Nothing in there. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

I have no Event ID 517's in the Event Viewer. There are NO recent Backup errors in the event viewer. I need help! Thanks!!

Windows 2012 Essentials Server Backup Questions

$

I've been running server backup for about 5 days now and I have some questions.

1.)  So far, server backup only reports one backup available (the last one).  My backup size is currently 732gb and my backup drive is 1394gb.  I would expect to be able to keep more than one copy if the backup is doing incremental backups.  But it appears to be doing a full backup each time which probably explains why I only have one copy.  The drives being backed up are NTFS, not REFS which I have seen as the culprit in another post.  Any ideas?

2.)  I want to setup a backup swap for offsite storage.  I only have one bay available to mount a backup drive at any time.  From what I've read, I would need to have both drives online in order to add them to the config at the same time.  Otherwise I'll have to re-run the backup wizard every time I swap the drives.  Is there a workaround for this?  Are there any plans to support backup sets with Windows Server Backup in the future?

Thanks for any help,

Windows 2012 WSB - Error 80780175: Backing up Hyper-V VM on CSV

$

Hello!

I am trying to get WSB to backup Hyper-V VM's on a CSV.  I am told that this is possible with Windows 2012 (http://www.aidanfinn.com/?p=12976,http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj614621, etc.) although there are plenty of posts which say that it's not possible as well.  Here is the error that I get in the Windows Backup Log (C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsServerBackup):

Application backup
Writer Id: {66841CD4-6DED-4F4B-8F17-FD23F8DDC3DE}

Error Message   : Component was skipped from volume shadow copy.

   Detailed Error  : 80780189
Detailed Error Message : Windows Backup cannot backup an application with files on a CSV volume.

Here is my backup command (from an elevated command prompt):

wbadmin start backup -backuptarget:\\server1\usb-backup -hyperv:"Routing-VM"

The CSV volume is running on a HP MSA P2000 SAN.  I don't know if the VSS drivers were installed for the SAN or not.

Is this backup possible to do?  If so, can anyone give me some direction?  I really would appreciate the help!

Thanks.. dave

Access Denied when running backup.

Windows 7 Pro backing up to a drive on another computer over the network. This worked fine for years, but suddenly stopped working a few weeks ago. I can access the network location through Windows Explorer, and I can add/remove files on that drive. I've tried turning off MS Security Essentials and UAC. I don't have any restore points. What is causing this error?

I get the following error:

"The specified network location cannot be used.

The current network location cannot be used for storing your backup. Click 'Add network location' to specific a new location or different credentials.

Access is denied. (0x80070005)"
